Are personal vehicles necessary where you live in the Philippines? I see more personal cars and other vehicles on the road today as compared to before.

or

Are public transportations enough for your daily needs still? Do you get in a jeepney, tricycle, bus, shuttle bus, minivan, taxi, train, metro-link, subway...? or do you prefer to ride a bike?
filipinoy
public trans. was enough for me. the MRT station was just walking distance from my house.. i really think public transportation in the Phil. is better than here in the S. California

the only subway i've experience in the Phil. was sandwiches lol

although some of the l/mrt lines do go underground in some areas

using public transportation is definitely more enjoyable compared to driving your own personal car. You'll always find someone to talk with and along the way you'll meet new friends. People who arrive and depart at a routine schedule are always seeing each other and riding together whether in a MRT station, bus stops and jeepney spots.

personal cars do have their advantages. You definitely can roam freely around at your convience. You can chose your own music and play it as loud as you can. You can bring anyone as long as they pay my gas! ha! ha! ha!

what sucks are accidents and maintenance issues. Do we have a road side assistant company equivalent to triple AAA? Oh maybe one, I actually saw one tow truck and you could be waiting for hours before they arrive and pick up your car. You have to be your own mechanic in those situations. Good thing we do have several car repair shops, because Filipinos are experts at car repairing. Another thing, do we have car insurance available?

and car theft is very common.

and people sometimes forget to get an oil change every 3 months.

Cars are very impractical personal vehicles because they need more gasoline and prone to get stuck in traffic.

I think motorcycles are the most practical personal transportation because I travel 30km from my house to work and I only spend approx P25 going there unlike when I commute I spend approx P75 for my fare. It also takes 30 mins to go to work using a motorcycle instead of commuting which takes around 2 hours.

I can carry 2 passengers but the law in the Philippines only allows 1 passenger if using the highways and I think its for safety reasons.
filipinoy
^i didnt know you can't carry two on highways, here in the US its legal or at least i think it is
martin_nuke
The motorcycle law in the Philippines is very strict you will get a ticket by over speeding, loud exhaust, broken side mirrors, broken headlights, tail lights or signal lights, no helmet, more than 1 passenger, carrying a passenger less than 12 years old, etc...

.................................^is doing 'wheelies' with a motorcycle illegal? lol

they don't want to discourage people from riding motorcycles, but they do want to prevent accidents, minimize injuries and protect your life.

Are body armor jackets a requirement for a motorcycle rider to wear?

In Provinces where smaller cities and towns are more common, you can get away with almost anything with a motorcycle.

Motorcycles are a wonderful little vehicles that could nimbly pass through traffic.

I prefer to ride motorcycles on off road and dirt roads....more fun!

There are some places in Manila where shoes, knee pads and elbow pads are required but I see many riders in the Philippines wearing complete protectors even in areas where it is not required.

Actually the bike I use is dual purpose for the road and off road.

In the Philippines they're called motors. They are fun as hell. I used my cousins 125cc motor and it was more than enough for me.

Scooters are better than motorcycles in the city and town where roads are nice and smooth.

Scooters are more way comfortable to ride on because of its seating design has more width. Plus, its easier to get on and off, because you don't have to swing your leg up and over as high as a motorcycle. Also, there are extra room in the front for your feet to rest on.

fanatic bikers, you have to watch this video....I can't believe only one person made it on top....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ht3DMDx1spo...feature=related

Filipinos are doing this probably in rural areas. Extreme bikers should only do this kind of hazardous activity with supervision and protection.

extreme sports gives you an unbelievably high adrenaline but in doing so they break their bones and bleed horrifically.

In the Philippines motorcycles are not just personal transportations they are already part of Philippine lifestyle and subculture and this is how they promote motorcycles in the Philippines.

I have two bikes a scooter and a motorcycle and they are both Hondas. The blue one is a Philippine made Honda and the black/red one is a Thai made Honda. The blue one is not actually a scooter it is considered here in the Philippines as a motorcycle because it has a gear shifter. I use the blue one for long distance travel and it is a very light and very fuel efficient bike 60 to 65 km per liter and I use the black/red one for short distance rides.

The disadvantage of scooters is that when going uphill the belt tends to slip and hear this schreeching sound and smell something burning which really bad for the scooter and the terrain in the Philippines is very unpredictable that is why motorcycles are still prefered for long intercity rides.

Motorcycles are not as nimble and agile as scooters, because the wheels are too big to make quick turns. Motorcyclist prefer to ride where there are less vehicles on the street, because they want to accelerate at an optimum rate and maintain their cruise at a high speed without being concern whats ahead of them. They know if they make their turns quickly they will skid and slide off the road and fly out of their seats. Although motorcycles are faster, they are not design to make several quick turns at high speeds. Scooters are better at it in comparison because of smaller wheels and a lighter frame.

Small diameter scooter wheels are more sensitive to bumpy roads than large diameter motorcycle wheels and you will experience a smoother ride with large diameter wheels.

Many motorcyclists in the Philippines use scooter wheels on their motorcycles like this Philippine made Honda motorcycle with scooter wheels.

Anyway Filipinos already learned how to be nimble even with large diameter motorcycle wheels.

A scooters' advantages are in the cities where there are narrow passages, roads, avenues, streets, corridors, alleys and quick turnouts and roundabout loops. A city where buildings and houses are clump right next to each other providing little space for vehicles to run through. A scooter is smaller with a lighter frame and along with it a smaller wheel which provides a low center of gravity allowing the vehicle to be more nimble and agile in cities compared to a motorcycles. A scooter can shift left and right easier, smoother and more efficient in the city. A motorcycles' heavy weight and bigger wheels doesn't allow it to be shifty and therefore makes wider turns. A motorcycle can look very sloppy in these in-close type cities.

The scooter breaks with ease. A motorcycle in a city breaks hard when it's trying to quickly slow down. You don't want to hit a pedestrian, vehicle, sign or wall....

Scooters are easier to use and more gas efficient.

Scooter has a built in storage for your personal belongings which a motorcycle doesn't have.

Scooters are more fashionably design for both genders, while motorcycles are primarily design for men only.

Scooters are slower and that's what prevents people from getting carelessly involve in an accident.

A scooters sales price does cost less compared to a motorcycle and maintenance cost are less.

In Southern Europe, where you find old cities with narrow roads and passages, they prefer to use scooters.

Scooters are more effective and efficient in traveling for shorter period of time especially small cities, old cities, a community, town, suburbs....

Scooters are safer because your legs are tuck inside while in a motorcycle your legs are exposed outside.

Scooters are more comfortable to ride with on a daily basis only on smooth surfaces.

Motorcycles are more suited for wide-open cities and roads where speed becomes a greater importance. Motorcycles are faster.

Motorcycles are more funner as you go faster and gives you an adrenaline pump.

Motorcycles can easily handle bumps and different terrain types and it takes a better hit. Motorcycles can go on and off road and go uphill and downhill more effectively.

Motorcycles can get to your destination faster.

Motorcycles are better at longer distance.

Motorcycles can fly off ramps and do other dangerous acrobatic stunts.

Motorcycles are appropriate in bar scenes and cruising withs motorcycle group at daytime and at nights.

Motorcycles can carry more people and heavier people.

Motorcycles are better and faster at freeways and highways.

Motorcycles can accelerate quickly and maintain a cruise at a high speed.
