I believe if the Philippines want to rebuild it must start with education. Not only must we build a class of great intellectual in various fields but also a class of noble character. Do you believe schools should try to create nationalism (moderate)?

I don't think so.... because education needs money. We have to end this corruption and borrowing TOO MUCH money. Refrain doing projects that makes them borrow money from another country and start doing projects that will benefit the needs of the filipinos. Overpopulation planning too. And when something seems to be going in the right way, then it's the time to take care of the future generation of the Philippines (in short, children)

Well one way to combat corruption is through education. We do not neccessarily need money to have school promote good character and even then at this point parents need to educate their own kids on certain matters.

I don't think so. Maybe, if The government can support education other than Road projects and some useless projects, yes it can. But you must know that education really needs money in a republic world. If look closely, the richer the school, the better the education. (think Ateneo).

If you know my grandfather, Cirilo "Roy" Montejo, a congressman in the district of Leyte, he is the one who established first public highschool in the Philippines and it actually helped People in tacloban a lot. But that is because he supported the school by providing needs.

I see your point. Maybe what I should've have said was those who have good education (and character as well) should be in charge. Unfortunately with our best and brightest they leave the country and never come back. Also have you ever read "The Analects" or at least heard of Confucius?

Well Confucius was a wise Chinese man who lived in China during a time of conflict. People were were selfish, government was corrupt, and there was little care for traditions. Confucius set out on a quest to reform the government but failed to secure a position so instead he became a teacher. He had many students and hoped that one day one of those good students will become a high official. Unfortunately he died thinking he didn't do anything but his influence is prevalent in East Asia. The things he stressed the most was loyalty to the family, rule of propriety (the way things should be done), and collectivism (a common social belief that is prevalent in all of Asia). He had ideas of good government that suggested things such as leaders being good examples (one our govt. definitely needs) and concern for the people. Another thing I like was how he suggest using education as a way to better the citizens and how it should encourage people to have a desire for learning to better themselves and each other. He even had suggestions on way to create new traditions or customs if old ones were lost. He suggested that traditions or customs should be based on ideas that are important and thus as long as these new traditions or customs carry the same spirit or message then it is as legitimate as the old ones. Some of his saying include:

"Find a job you love and you'll never work a day in your life”.
“Men’s natures are alike; it is their habits that separate them.”
“The more man meditates upon good thoughts, the better will be his world and the world at large.”
“Things that are done, it is needless to speak about…things that are past, it is needless to blame.”
“And remember, no matter where you go, there you are.”
When we see men of worth, we should think of equaling them; when we see men of a contrary character, we should turn inwards and examine ourselves.

The Philippines could learn from our Eastern cousins then again we already have Christianity and Jesus pretty much preached the same thing XP nonetheless I believe the Philippines could learn from Confucius as well.

Ya the last years of his life were spent on the run as corrupted leaders saw him as a threat. I actually hope to live in the Philippines and teach the kids to work hard for their country. I may have lived in Japan and America for most of my life but the cry of the motherland really gets to me. There is so much potential in that country but the few on top are impeding that for their own gain. I wish for the country to prosper so people don't have to leave their homeland and be truly proud to be Filipino.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Every successful nation on Earth has good educations and opportunities. In the Philippine they can build all the malls they want or improve roads or whatever but if there is no smart people at the end of the all hell will break loose.

There are three kinds of education: material, human (or social) and spiritual.

“Material education is concerned with the progress and development of the body, through gaining its sustenance, its material comfort and ease. This education is common to animals and man.”

“Human (or social) education signifies civilization and progress ….. government, administration, charitable works, trades, arts and handicrafts, sciences, great inventions and discoveries and elaborate institutions, which are the activities essential to man as distinguished from the animal.”

And there is the spiritual education - to develop moral virtue and attribute that human inherently possess – justice, compassion, generosity, love, forgiveness …….… noble character

I agree with this 100%! We frankly are not known for our intellects & what we need are intellectuals on every field. We need to be culturally informed, we need to be informed & take pride in our past as well. The reason why there is so much corruption is because the vast majority is ignorant, they follow wherever they are lead, they are incapable of thinking for themselves with objectivity. The more educated people are, the more aware they are of their surroundings, the harder it is to lead them into corruption. Filipinos are highly gullible, we need to get rid of this. Also, notice how we get rid of traditional Filipino values in favor of foreign values? I think someone needs to assess the advantages of values we have & those that merely hamper us. Get rid of the 'Bahala na' or 'Pwede na' mindset, replace it with the determination found in other cultures. Inject honor, integrity & principles back into the culture via the media. I don't believe in nationalism, I believe in patriotism though. Nationalism encompasses both the good & the bad that goes along with it, whereas patriotism focuses on positive output & input only.

The media is an effective tool that the government can use to inject the importance of education, high achievement & true pinoy pride.
