For those who don't understand the lyrics of this song/video, I'll make a brief translation-summary.

This story is about an old man, who was once a sailor a long time ago.
Regardless his parents opposition, he chose to love freely.
He used to hide mails from the girl in a wall.
He used to carry the girl in his boat on the Qinhuai River.
And he used to make a promise to the girl that they would be together forever.

December 13th, 1937, the Japanese Imperial Army captured Nanjing and started a massacre of 300,000 armless civilians within six weeks.

This man survived because he sailed out of the town. But the girl didn't. They were separated forever. When he came back to Nanjing, he found nothing but a ruin.

Half a century passed, the old man still cannot forget about this girl, eventhough he later formed a family and started his own career. What's left is the countless wrinkles on his face and painful memories.
