Depends on the dialect of region. Issan dialect is slightly different from nothern Dialect.

Issan dialect sounds more like "Eyang" where nothern Dialect would sound more like "unyung"

Laotians, French, Italians, Burmese, Cambodians, Spanish, and I believe Vietnamese (not sure) all have the NY sound and many if not all also have the Y sound, but Thais are unable to pronounce NY and can only make the simple Y sound. LOL!

In Laotian, we have two different words such as Nyaa and Yaa, but in Thai those two different words would be pronounced as Yaa. Thais can't pronounce Ny like Europeans, Latin Americans, and many Asians.

The Spanish Año (year) would be pronounced as Ayo in Thai.

Thais can't pronounce NY properly. They can only pronounce Y sound because in stupid Thai language there is no distinction between Y and NY, but in Laotian language we have preserved both Y and NY, but Thai only has Y.

Personally, I think Ny sounds horrible because it's nasal. In Khmer, I guess we borrow the word 'smile' from Laos instead of Thai, and it ends up being nyo-nyim, so friggin hard to say when Yim sounds nicer.
