"Filipinos" was a term used during the spanish regime to refer to the insulares, or pure-blooded spaniards born in the philippines, who were deemed inferior to those born in spain, the peninsulares. tires of being inferior, they began carving a new identity... they started calling themselves "filipinos". and as we probably all now, except for those who don't value history, that natives were invariably called "indios"...

I'm curious, what's your opinion about our country being named after a Spanish King and our people being called "Filipinos", whereas, the original meaning of it referred to the Spaniards born in the Philippines?
JMAC
it does have a negative meaning because of the history but pondering and stressing about it is pretty useless.

We shouldn't care about the old 'intended' meaning but we should care more about the people who gave it the real meaning of being Filipino.
PervertBurger
Exactly. Theres not much you can do about it now.

I do not have any problem with it. It's history. I'm just wondering why some people are thinking "the old-fashioned" way.

I brought up this topic because I was surfing the gov.ph forum and almost all of them are complaining...

If we're not "Filipinos" what are we then? Ano kaya itatawag sa atin?

I don't look at the name filipino in an bad way. Filipinos will never advance if we keep on moping around in the past. I don't care if thats what you called spaniards back then. I see myself as filipino and thats that.

LOL on the second link I actually posted there. Don't even bother with those people on EAN. They said I was lying when I told them about the Phil-Am war. And they said that I was being ungrateful to the US for singlehandedly freeing the Phils. from Spain. sure.gif
Kanlungan
They know less about the Phil. Hist.

maybe those peeps in EA see the Phil-Am war as plain insurgency... How could it be an insurgency when it was an American soldier who started it all by shooting a Filipino?! Hmmp.

Maldito isn't Dalawapo, I know that guy. I used to chat with him on another forum.
He's like half-filipino and half-hawiian. And he doesn't have the same views as Dalawapo.
Kanlungan
I see, but I've read a post of "Maldito" in Livejournal...(forgot the community) and he sounded like Dalawapo(except that Dalawapo sounds very childish)

BTW, Is this true about the Sorianos?

If Filipinos would just accept them as Filipinos and not.. Spanish Filipinos or whatever the hell they think.  It's okay to be "just" Filipino.  There's nothing wrong with it.  I went to school with a bunch of kids from the Soriano family and they swore by the Holy Bible that they were Spanish and nothing of Filipino blood.  Because this family was so rich and well known in many parts of the Philippines, people actually believed they were Spanish and not Filipinos.  In actuality, they ARE Filipinos with yes, some Spanish.  It just drove me nuts how they thought being Spaniard marked up their value to that of being Filipino.  What, ever.
Ek-ek
Maldito is different .

I saw dalawapo yesterday in this chat

Did he post? I usually see him in the active users

dual citizenship is nice, cuz you're not being just american without having to be bothered about non citizen problem in pi. however it is so hard, that most people i'm sure are just us citizens.
