Hey guys, I've just bought a Mac (never used one before) and I'm trying to install some software to type Vietnamese. Looks like Unikey only support Windows. Do you guys know any software to type Vietnamese that is compatible with Mac?

If your Mac is SNOW Leopard, then it comes with Vietnamese Unikey automatically.

1) Go to System Preferences
2) Then, go to Language & Text
3) Scroll down and check the box for "Vietnamese Unikey". You should see under "Vietnamese Key", the box "Simple Telex" should be checked.
4) Then, look to the bottom for the phrase "Show Input menu in menu bar". You check the box next to it, so that the language bar appears at the top of the screen.

To turn on/off Vietnamese fonts, you look for the language bar at the top of the screen, very often an icon which is a US flag. Click on that and click on Simple Telex. From this moment on, you can begin typing in Vietnamese :-)

That's it!

For Mac softwares, please visit http://www.updatesofts.com/forums/index.php.

I guess you can type requests in English or Vietnamese if you can't find the software you want :-)

How do I know if my operating system is Snow Leopard?

My Mac is the new MacBook Air. Should that come with Leopard or Snow Leopard?

I went to Text and Language, but I didn't find "Vietnamese Unikey". Under language, I only found "Viet", when I clicked on that, the language list turned into Vietnamese. I guess thats not it.

Macbook Air comes in pre-installed Snow Leopard. You got to exactly the right place, though it doesn't look 100% the same as I said because my Mac is an old one and yours is newer.

Just try to check the box next to it and make sure to check the box at the bottem "Show Input...". Then do as I said and see what happens..

Hì found it. Thanks bobcat. Cảm ơn. I think everything is fine except the underlining thingy that kinda bothers me as I type but I guess I'll get used to it.

I recommend trying Vietnamese Keyboard Set as well. Generally (in Mail, Safari, TextEdit etc.) Vietnamese Keyboard Set displays no underlining but only highlights the vowel ready for receiving the accent with yellow background color. This has the advantage that you have an unobstructed view on what you are typing because the letters "g", "p", "q" and "y" are not partially obscured by underlining. In Microsoft Word, Vietnamese Keyboard Set does display underlining but only of the vowel ready for receiving the accent instead of the whole word and only in grey color instead of black. So you may wish to compare the visual appearance and settle for what fits you best.
