TWO fatalities in killer tsunamis that ravaged Phuket, Thailand on Sunday were identified as Chinese-Filipinos in a report aired over GMA Network's "Saksi" newscast Tuesday.
Gilbert Choi and David Tan were both killed when giant waves hit Patong Beach in Phuket. Choi's remains were recovered immediately after the disaster on Sunday, while Tan's body was recovered Monday.

A GMA-7 reporter assigned to cover relief operations in Phuket, Thailand interviewed Tan's Filipino wife Rosemarie and daughter Beverly, who confirmed the fatalities as Chinese-Filipinos.

The Chois and Tans are first-degree relatives, the report said.

The Department of Foreign Affairs, however, maintained that Choi and Tan were not Filipino citizens. Both held British passports, the DFA said in the same report.

Rosemarie Tan recounted to GMA-7 how the waves took the Phuket vacationers by surprise. "Suddenly, the waves attacked us," she said in Filipino. "Everything went so fast."

"The waves were so immense...it hit us in a second," added daughter Beverly in the same GMA-7 interview. "There was nowhere to run."

According to the report, Chinese-Filipinos Garvyn Tan and Sherlyn Choi, the victims' children, were still missing. Aside from Rosemarie and Beverly Tan, those injured included Margaret Choi, Gayleen Choi, Iris Tan, and Daphne Tan.
