VN Naval commanders are now trying on upgrading their long-outdated stocks , purposely for mostly coastal patrolling ie. defensive and maritime monitoring - not for all out offense or naval power projectile ie. what Chinese naval is wanting to show to U.S and small neighbors its dominance + influence in East and SEA oceanic water , which essentially required warships eg. destroyers + aircraft carriers , etc

This addition as part of Vietnam's Naval modernisation 2010 - 2012 :

_ Total of 6 Kilo class Submarines with missiles: ultra quiet/an-ti warships/anti-subs
_ Gepard Frigates : 4 (2+2) for current undergoing contract + later on will build more locally under license (still negotiating with Russian counterpart)



--- Edit: I wouldn't put down these frigates , these patrol ships are excellent value for the money its governments spent (otherwise China would not buy 20 of these ships themselves as they can make their own, so was Indian, Malaysian russian-made weaponry etc.)

what happened if Vietnam has these two ships? Can we name them Ho Chi Minh 1 and Ho Chi Minh 2 ?

I prefer Vietnam to call the first Gepard 3.9 Hoang Sa and the second Gepard Truong Sa, instead of Dinh Tien Hoang.


Perhaps, Vietnam will name two of the subs Hoang Sa and Truong Sa.

I am glad that Vietnam is upgrading its naval equipment, but the Gepard frigates seems pretty mediocre in design. So I hope more money will be allocated to buy more sophisticated ships.

uhm, but no, they sell regular version to both taiwan and china, but with Vietnam they sell us improved version, google it.

Considering the fact that China is a bigger market for US goods, It's really a doubt that Vietnam can depend on the US to help them at the cost of losing business in China.

The rule is to never depend on another nation for your security. South Vietnam got majorly screwed when the US abandoned them and they didn't have the experience and capability to fight alone against North Vietnam with strong Soviet & China backing ; because Saigon depended too much on the US.

Vietnam also got screwed when Soviet Union stopped giving aid after the cold war was over.

So basically never depend on anyone for anything, as the climate might change and your "friend" might abandon you and you would get screwed

Soviet: yes, China: no they are a bunch of Bussiness men, they selling weapon to North Viet, not give away, US Soldiers did fought against North Viet, but only North Vietnamese fought against Foreigner.

After 1969 Vietnam, didn't import Chinese weapon anymore, some facts you should know.

And yes, South Vietnam was in a mess when US leaving, its like the snake losing it head you know, Us made South Vietnam and when they leaving, no suprised that it would happen.

In 2018, Vietnam will be the second country after Russia owns T50 Fighter, How to china get T50 from Russia? What do you think when T50 vs J20?
