On 10 February 2011 Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev called for increased military deployments on Kuril Islands. In making the statement, Medvedev said the islands were an "inseparable" part of the country and a strategic Russian region. No direct reference was made to what military equipment would be deployed on the islands, although the Russian RIA Novosti news agency reported that the new Mistral-class amphibious assault ships, being built in a deal with France, would be deployed to the region. On 15 February 2011 plans for deploying advanced anti-air missiles systems on the Islands was announced.

This is really disturbing. I hope Japan will pressure the U.S. to work together on this issue although I'm not sure they'll really care to do much. Why isn't anyone mentioning that Russia has no reason to be there. Why are Russians all the way over there in the first place?? They really need to work on their economy on the western side of their country considering they can barely manage that. Karafuto has always been occupied by asians (ainu, orok, evenki) . If Japan isnt allowed to militarily move there, neither should Russia at the very very least. I know that politics are Machiavellan but for Russia to do this at such a time really shows that Asians need to step it up and back these predators out of our region. My heart goes out to Japan and I have faith they will rise through this most challenging and difficult time to triumph better than ever before.

Oh, on a banal note, I think Japan should graciously resign Dokdo/Takeshima to Korea. Yes, it was always disputed over for centuries but its tiny, there isnt much there, and the benefits for Korean-Japanese relations would weigh far greater than anything happening in the current situation.
Dokdo for Korea, Karafuto for Japan and greater east asian co-operation. Thanks for reading~

They are not gonna give up on "takeshima". Not ever.

If japan wants to fu-k with Korea's island, Russians can fu-k with japan's island.

Once again, the Asiatic race is losing land to white people. Things like this make me happy that Turkic horsemen conquered Central Asia from white Persians.

Talks between Korea and Japan concerning Dokdo/Takeshima are understandably charged with both sides having valid historical documents to back-up their case. The matter could be taken to a third party international court to be decided once and for all but the problem with his method is that third party resolution will still leave behind unresolved feelings of resentment. Rather than arguing whose it is and having protests , I think it might be more productive( particularly in a situation of ambiguous/debateable ownership) to approach it from the perspective that regardless of whose it was, it would help heal relations if Japan would offer the rocks to Korea as a symbolic gesture ( this becomes a challenge even for Japanese people that are understanding to Korea, imagine being a Japanese person thinking 'yes, I think in light of the history and the pain we caused during war, it would be alright to let Koreans have Dokdo.' all of a sudden come face to face with the image of an angry, livid Korean man biting the head of a bat on national tv and burning the Japanese flag) That type of interaction I think should stop.
The attitude that it is alright for Russia to encroach into Karafuto because Korea and Japan are in dispute over Dokdo/Takeshima is wrong, because regardless of personal feelings, wrong is wrong. Karafuto has long been inhabited by native Ainu, Orok/Evenki peoples as well as Koreans. For that region to be under anything other than asian control is absolutely ridiculous.
East Asians should remember the divide and conquer method that western powers tactically use to stronghold better positions for themselves.
Russia and U.S. are very friendly ( there were never any direct casualities in general to each other during the cold war) and would most likely join against China quite easily. This really changes a lot of the dynamics that we currently believe are safe in.

Yes, until the Russians in 1582 defeating the Turkic Siberian Khanate, to the point where their language is exterminated.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, they got back Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. As for Siberian natives, they are growing in numbers. All the while, more and more white Russians are going back to European Russia. I know Yakutia has an Asiatic majority right now. Although many of them are Russified.

The mistake of the Altaic nomads was not settling down and building a sedentary society. If they had done that, they would have had a more firm control over their lands. It is easier to conquer a nation with a few wandering nomads than it is with one filled with cities/farms crowded with people.

This is true. They did that to Japan during WW2 and are doing it to China today. Unfortunately, Asiatics are too focused on their own differences to care about the outsiders. What they don't know is that our race is losing land as well as influence on the world.

Oh, please. That's ridiculous. Japan is one of the few allies the U.S. has that it can trust. Many Americans are delighted to have Japan as an ally. Russia, meanwhile, is cutthroat and backstabbing (just think: Vladmir Putin and the KGB). They are hardly allies. We just say that they are because we don't want MAD.

I think I speak for nearly all Americans when I say that I would be much more supportive of Japan than Russia if this turned into a full-fledged conflict.

BUT the factor that complicates this is Russia's nuclear arsenal. The U.S. would not be keen on intervening simply because they don't want a conflict like this to turn nuclear.

Of course, the U.S. isn't too trusting of China either. But I doubt China would step up and protect Japan like you guys are hoping. China isn't your friend just like Russia isn't your friend.

Both Russia and China think the US is encircling them by developing a military alliance with S. Korea, Japan and Australia. So both China and Russia are trying to get together to counteract it.

Cartoon from Russia

Found this other cartoon. The Russian Bear and Chinese dragon talking to the US, Japan and Australia.

Russia controls islands which Japan claims. Japan controls islands which S. Korea claims. And Japan controls
islands which China claims. China calls them the Diaoyu islands. Japan calls them the Senkaku Islands.

It's call balance of power, having China, Russia, Japan and U.S around NE Asia back stabbing politically each other ensure stalemate.
I don't see Russia, China, Japan and even U.S giving up their stand in NE Asia unless there's next major disaster that put them all in the sinking hole.
chiuchimu
I say at some point in time. We take those islands back by force.

The U.S. better back us up against those Russians. Japan has always acted like an Allie to the U.S., its time the U.S. also prove they are our Allie.
Mid-Night_Sun
what a lame cartoon pic. that isnt even a chinese dragon. the russian bear looks like pedobear.

u're thinking exactly the way the US wants u to think. they are deliberately playing japan against russia. russia is just acting in self defense against US containment strategy here. the US is deploying military installments in eastern europe and the EU and NATO are continuing to march on eastward. since russia is losing ground in the west they are scrambling over the east. very predictable u can hardly blame them for this.

u may have enthousiastic US-backing in foreign policy but know that there will just be no way in hell for japan/US to defeat russia or take those islands back. and russia won't hesitate to attack when provoked (especially by a US underling). they are even more agressive and dangerous than china. also u can vow all u want and say u'll take them back in the future. but considering that russia's economy is growing and japan's stagnating i find this highly unlikely. the odds will be even slimmer for u in the future. this is the cost u have to pay for hosting US military. so u might as well live with it. don't hope too much cus u chose the wrong side. as china and russia continue to grow they will become more serious about their national sovereignty and integrity and more agressive about it too. they do not look kindly toward US allies, especially the ones close to their borders. if they are attacked they WILL attack back. putin had promised to aim nukes on ukraine if it joined the nato. do u think they will hesitate to nuke japan when they are actually ATTACKED? please talk some sense here. ur best course of strategy here is to simply try to talk things out and get rid of the US. cus right now for the russians u are nothing more than a target, a small one too

Not if you go by the Internet.

Looks like Japan will have to bite the bullet on this one. Maybe in some distant future, China-Japan will need to do something to carve up Siberia. But for that to happen a lot of attitudes will need to change on both sides.

I only know that there is really no border between Belarus and Russia and one having a visa to Russia does not need to have a Belarus visa. Even the migration card you will fill in Sheremetevo or Domodedovo Moscow international airports or any other says you fill it for both countries. So with a visa to Russia you do not need to have a separate Belorussian visa and visa versa. But I am not sure how you go back home if you visa is expired... May be they will take you to prison, or will send you to GULAG... I do not know...
