OMG How many of these cases have happened in the past years?

QUOTE
A missing nursing student's family is offering $20,000 for information about her whereabouts after she disappeared Friday at a northern California hospital.

Michelle Hoang Thi Le was last spotted about 7 p.m. Friday going to her car in the parking garage at the Kaiser Permanente Hayward Medical Center. She is enrolled at the Hayward campus of Samuel Merritt University.

The 26-year-old beauty told friends she was going to drive to Reno with a friend after class that night, authorities said. Her friend never heard from her, and Le's vehicle was later found a few blocks from the hospital.

Le had a cell phone with her when she left class, but it was not found in the car.

"We haven't found anything at all that leads us [in] one direction or another, that tells us this is a foul play incident or anything," Lt. Roger Keener of the Hayward Police Department told KGO 7 News in San Francisco.

Le is halfway through Merritt's 12-month accelerated program.

Her family said Monday they collected $20,000 as a reward for her return.

"It's really hard not to assume the worst, but we're trying," the woman's brother, Michael, told reporters. "That's the hardest thing, staying positive."

"The entire Samuel Merritt University community is deeply concerned about the disappearance of our nursing student Michelle Le," school spokeswoman Elizabeth Valente told ABC News.

"She's an intelligent, beautiful, polite person who is very excited about her career of becoming a nurse," Valente said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "She wants to help people."

Anyone with information about Le's whereabouts is asked to contact the Hayward Police Department at (510) 293-7000.

Don't you guys see parallels with earlier cases of Annie Le and Phương Lê?

They all are Vietnamese college girls in their early 20s.
All attend medical/nursing schools
All went missing and then...
...and then their body showed up later

OMG And they all have the Le last name. This is scary.

Just to remind you guys about the case of Phuong Le last year

Missing Nurse, Phuong Le, Found Dead After Missing 2 Weeks

AIRFIELD, Calif. (CBS/AP) Phuong Le was just days from her 25th birthday and had recently graduated from the nursing program at Solano College when she went missing April 25 outside a local Barnes and Noble in Fairfield, Calif.

California police now say that they have identified remains found along a rural road in Napa County by a woman walking her dog as those of the missing woman.

Fairfield police Lt. Darrin Moody said Tuesday that investigators used fingerprints to identify the body and said no suspects have been identified but that they are classifying the death as a homicide.

A week after Le went missing, police searched the home and business of her former employer, who was reportedly the last person to speak with her before her disappearance. Police confirmed that Le and her former boss, Tchu Nguyen, had been in a relationship, but dismissed rumors Le was pregnant, according to CBS affiliate WFOR.

Police in Pennsylvania detained a man May 3 in connection with harassing text messages that were sent to Le's brother, Huong, claiming to know where she was. Police say that the man, who was not identified, said he got the number off the family's Facebook page and began sending the texts May 2.

The man apparently told police he saw everything on the news and was just playing around.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation helped local authorities with the autopsy, but the cause of death was not released because authorities don't want to compromise the investigation.

And the case of Annie Lê one year before Phương Lê

QUOTE
The murder of Annie Le occurred September 8, 2009, on the campus of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Annie Marie Le (July 3, 1985 – September 8, 2009), a 24-year-old American doctoral student at the Yale School of Medicine's Department of Pharmacology, was last seen in a research building on the New Haven campus on September 8. On September 13, the day she was to be married, she was found dead inside the building.[2][3][4] On September 17, police arrested a suspect, Raymond J. Clark, III,[1] a Yale lab technician who worked in the building.[5] Clark plead guilty to the murder on March 17, 2011.[6] Clark was sentenced to 44 years imprisonment on June 3.[7] The case generated frenetic media coverage, with a news producer trampled in a rush to a briefing.[8]

On the morning of September 8, Le left her apartment and took Yale Transit to the Sterling Hall of Medicine on the Yale campus. At about 10:00 a.m., she walked from Sterling Hall to another campus building at 10 Amistad Street, where her research laboratory was located. Le had left her purse, cell phone, credit cards, and cash in her office at Sterling Hall. She entered the Amistad Street building just after 10:00 a.m., as documented on footage from the building's security cameras. Le was never seen leaving the building. At approximately 9:00 p.m. on the evening of September 8, when Le had still not returned to her home, one of her five housemates called police to report her missing.

Because they were puzzled that security camera footage did not show Le exiting the building at Amistad Street, police closed the whole building for investigation. Police also searched through refuse at the Hartford dump, where Yale's garbage is incinerated, looking for clues as to Le's whereabouts. The FBI, the New Haven Police Department and the Connecticut State Police were all involved in the search. On Sunday, September 13, her planned wedding date, authorities discovered Le's body inside the wall of a basement laboratory in the Amistad Street building. Bloody clothes had previously been found above a ceiling tile in the same building.[9] The building and the area are monitored by about 75 security cameras and the entrance to the building and the rooms inside the building require Yale ID cards in order to be opened and accessed. The basement where Le's body was found houses animals (mostly mice) that are used for experiments and research. Due to the high security measures in the building, authorities and Yale officials maintain that it would be extremely difficult for someone without a Yale identification card to enter the basement laboratory where Le's body was discovered, leading them to focus their investigation on Yale employees and students.[10]

The Connecticut medical examiner's autopsy found that Le's death was due to "traumatic asphyxia due to neck compression".[5] On September 17 police arrested Raymond Clark, a 24-year-old lab technician who had been working in the building when Le disappeared.[5] The previous day he had been taken into custody after police had obtained a warrant to collect DNA samples from him; he had been released after providing a sample.[5]

News of the tragedy went worldwide, and expressions of sympathy were common, culminating in memorials held in New York and California, and the live broadcast of Annie Le's funeral on the internet. The Yale community also publicly mourned Le's death. The Yale Daily News reported that professor and Cold War historian John Lewis Gaddis called September 14 the "saddest day to open class" since the day after September 11, 2001.[11]

HAYWARD -- Investigators have served search warrants and questioned some "persons of interest" in the search for a missing nursing student who disappeared Friday night. However, police said they have no new hard leads as to the whereabouts of Michelle Le, a 26-year-old nursing student who went missing from an evening class at Kaiser Permanente Hayward Medical Center.

Lt. Roger Keener said police have questioned more than a dozen friends, family, co-workers and neighbors, as well as serving at least four search warrants, in an attempt to find Le.

Keener said one of those questioned was a woman who is believed to have had some type of prior relationship with Le. Police served a warrant to search the woman's home. She has not been arrested nor is she in custody, but she remains a "person of interest," he said.

He added that detectives are exploring several theories about Le's disappearance but wouldn't elaborate. He said police were hoping to review Le's cellphone records sometime Wednesday, but he was unsure whether they would be available.

Le last was seen about 7 p.m. Friday at Kaiser, where she was shadowing health care workers on the job as part of the nursing curriculum at Oakland-based Samuel Merritt University.

She told colleagues that she intended to drive to Reno later that evening to meet with friends, but she left on a break to get something from her car and has not been seen since, police said.

No one has been charged in Le's disappearance, and no one is in custody. At this point, Le is still classified as a missing person. While her disappearance is highly irregular, investigators are not certain a crime is involved, Keener said.

Keener added that Le's father recently has come from Vietnam to help with the search efforts. He also said Reno police are talking to Le's friend in that city, whom she was supposed to meet last weekend, about when their last communication was.

The case bears similarities to the disappearance of Phuong Le, who was found slain in May 2010 after she last was seen studying at a Fairfield book store.

In addition to having the same surname, Phuong Le had a similar description, was a year younger than Michelle Le, went to nursing school and drove a white Honda. Still, police said there is no evidence the cases are related.

Le is 5-foot-6 with black hair and brown eyes. She was wearing white nurse's scrubs at the time of her disappearance.

A $20,000 reward has been established for information leading to the missing San Mateo resident, and Hayward police have set up a hot line for information at 510-293-5051.

Is there a serial killer out there? This is scary.

The case of Phuong Le last year hasn't been solved and now this case...so similar.

Michelle Le: Missing nursing student’s former friend ‘person of interest’

HAYWARD, California (Isabelle Zehnder reporting) -- Hayward Police have questioned a friend of the nursing student who vanished last Friday during a break from rounds at a hospital to help determine what happened to Michelle Le.

Michelle, 26, was attending the San Mateo campus of Samuel Merritt University. She told her colleague she was going to get something from her car and never returned. Her car was found the following day blocks from Kaiser Permanente Hospital where she was taking classes. The car was originally parked at the hospital parking lot.

Detectives questioned Giselle Esteban who is a former close friend of Le’s. Esteban told KGO-TV in an interview that she “openly hates” Le. Esteban claims Michelle stole her boyfriend. She also told KGO that she had nothing to do with Michelle’s disappearance.

“We ultimately released [Esteban] and she remains, as do a couple of others, as a person of interest,” said Lt. Roger Keener of the Hayward Police Department.

Keener said police are following other leads, including the possibility this could be connected to another missing person’s case.

Michelle had told her friend that she and another friend planned to go to Reno after work Friday night. Police said she never called to cancel her trip.

Now they're following this lead...

I hope they can solve the case this time! We can't let whoever did this continue harming other people.

New reward offered in missing nursing student case

HAYWARD, Calif.—The family of a missing nursing student who disappeared a week ago has increased the reward to $40,000 for information leading to her safe return.
Family and friends of 26-year-old Michelle Le also scheduled a vigil for her from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday on Ponderosa Court. The street is about a half-mile from Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, where Le was last seen on May 27.

In a statement, Le's family said they are aware time is not on their side, but are buoyed by the addition of FBI missing persons personnel in the search.

Le disappeared during a break in class at Kaiser Permanente. Police say she told colleagues she was going to get something from her car, but then never returned.

Michelle Le Case: 'I Hope She Can Be Found Anywhere — Safe and Alive'

UPDATE: More than 200 people are gathered in Hayward tonight in a show of support for missing nursing student Michelle Le of San Mateo.

Her brother and cousin, who've been speaking on behalf of Le's family, spoke to the media and supporters who are gathered at the spot where Le's car was found after her disappearance last week.

"I hope she can found anywhere — safe and alive. Hopefully somewhere close," said Le's cousin Krystine Dinh.

A reward for information leading to Le's return — thanks to donations from strangers — has grown to $45,000. The family also announced that the FBI has stepped in to help with the investigation.

Community members are gathered at a cul-de-sac on Ponderosa Court off of Oliver Drive, where Le’s locked white Honda was discovered one week ago. Her cousin, brother and father spoke, and the group held a moment of silence and heard an inspirational reading.

At about 7 p.m. on May 27, Le stepped out during a break in her duties at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Hayward, and never returned. According to Hayward police, video surveillance from the Kaiser garage shows her car being driven out of the parking structure that night, though it does not clearly show who was driving.

Friends and fellow nursing students told police that Le was planning to drive to Reno that night after her clinical rotation ended at the Kaiser facility. But she never came back after the 7 p.m. break.

Investigators are still working through several leads, according to Hayward police Lt. Roger Keener. One of those leads involves a “person of interest” later identified as a Union City resident who said she “openly hated” her former friend for stealing her boyfriend – but who denied having anything to do with Le’s disappearance. The woman was questioned and released, Keener said.

“Until we find Michelle it’s very difficult for us to exclude anything because we don’t know what happened to her,” he told Patch earlier this week.

Le's brother, Michael Le, said Friday night that they aren't paying attention to the comments of one person and are instead focused on "all the love" shown to his sister.

Le’s family has not given up hope, and is asking the public’s help in finding her. The family initially put up a $20,000 reward for information leading to her return and then donations began pouring in.

The family released this statement earlier today:

Our family and friends are thankful for, and have been touched by, the continual support we have received from loved ones, the California community, the police, and the media. We are also aware that time is not on our side. Through our collaboration with the Hayward Police Department, we know that the six personnel assigned are doing their best with the resources currently dedicated. The reality is that the Department can only devote so many hours per day to the search. As today marks a week since her disappearance, we believe the addition of dedicated FBI personnel, who have extensive experience in missing persons cases, will benefit the search. With additional support, we have now been able to increase the reward amount from $20,000 to $40,000 for Michelle’s safe return, the return of her cellphone, and/or any additional information that is crucial to bringing her home. Michelle’s family and friends will be holding a search support gathering on Friday, June 3, beginning at 7pm at 27560 Ponderosa Court, the location her car was found after her disappearance. Loved ones will be traveling from all over the state to meet the community that has so greatly helped us, and to collaborate on where to go from here.

Le moved to San Mateo from Oakland last year so that she could attend nursing school at Samuel Merritt University's satellite campus and be closer to her work, according to a friend who asked to remain anonymous.

She is “An incredibly sweet and thoughtful girl – very level headed,” the friend said. “I really hope this turns out well. … We all hate how helpless we feel regarding her disappearance.”

Michelle Le is described as 5 feet 6 inches tall with black hair and brown eyes. The Hayward Police Department has set up a tip line for anyone with information that could help with the case; that number is (510) 293-5051.

Media outlets have noted the similarity between Le's disappearance and one in Solano County last year in which the body of 24-year-old Phuong Le was found 12 days after she disappeared in front a bookstore in Fairfield. Police admitted there are striking similarities: Both drove white Hondas, both were nursing students, shared the same last name, and have similar physical characteristics.

Reward for information leading to woman who vanished in Hayward raised to $65,000

HAYWARD -- The reward for information leading to missing 26-year-old nursing student Michelle Le climbed to $65,000 after pledges from her school and employer on Monday.

Le disappeared May 27 during a break from her duties at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Hayward, where she was assisting staff as part of her nursing curriculum at Samuel Merritt University.

The school announced that it has partnered with Turner Construction Co., where Le has worked as an accounting clerk for five years, to put up $45,000 for information leading to Le's safe return. Le's family pledged a $20,000 reward shortly after her disappearance.

Le, a San Mateo resident, vanished after telling colleagues around 7 p.m. that she was going to fetch something from her car, and never returned. She was planning to meet a friend after work and take a trip to Reno.

Relatives call Le very responsible and not someone who would voluntarily walk away without telling anyone.

"She has always been on top of things," said brother Michael Le. "On top of her things, on top of my things."

Le's car later was found on Ponderosa Court, a residential street about a half mile from the hospital.

Police expect to release an update on the search for Le early Monday evening.

The family issued a statement on Sunday critical of Hayward police, and asking that the FBI take a lead role in the investigation because of its experience in dealing with missing persons cases.

Le is 5-foot-6 with black hair and brown eyes, and was wearing white nurse's scrubs at the time of her disappearance. Police have set up a hot line for information regarding Le at 510-293-5051. The family has a website dedicated to Le at www.michellelemissing.com.
