Ishikawa Hitomi

Ishikawa Hitomi started her music career when she won the Fuji TV audition "Kimi Koso Star da!" when she was in her second year of high school. She debuted two years later in 1978 on the Pony Canyon sublabel NAV with the single "Migi Muke Migi". Her biggest hit came in 1981 when she released a cover of Miki Seiko's song "Machibuse". During about the same time, she debuted as a voice actress in the anime Purin Purin Monogatari. She came in at the end of the "Pink Lady' era. Ishikawa Hitomi is one of the few that marks the transition from the older 'Doo wop" style of Jpop to the more modern sound of 80s Jpop.

In 1987, Ishikawa decided to take a break from a show business for a little while because she contracted Hepatitis B. She would later come back a year later without her former agency Minayo Production. Later on, she would go onto marry musician Yamada Naoki in 1993 and appear regularly on the NHK television show Mother and Kid's Television Time. She has become a regular on various television and variety shows since her comeback in the late 1980s generasia

Nakamori Akina

Akina Nakamori (中森明菜 Nakamori Akina?, born on July 13, 1965) is a Japanese pop singer and actress. She was one of the most popular singers of the 1980s in Japan.[1] She is known for her deep, power-house voice.

Within two years of her debut, she set herself apart from all the singers of her generation by singing provocative songs, with a chameleon-like image change with the release of each new single. Her mature and rebellious image was to be the direct opposite of the other pop rival, Seiko Matsuda; who projected a girl next door, sweet natured charm. The media competed them against each other throughout the 1980s, scrutinising every details of their lives and supposed rivalry. During that period, Akina has always expressed an admiration and respect for Seiko, even humming to Seiko's songs when both happen to be on the same live shows.

Her hair style and dress sense was very much copied by teenagers back in the 1980s. Music wise, her recording company moulded her to be a successor after the mature and sophisticated Momoe Yamaguchi, a legendary Japanese singer who retired at age 21 for marriage. Her songs were always of heartbreaks, or rebellion, never to stray far from the 'mold'. Wiki

Ohtaki Eiichi

During a time when 99% of Japan's pop artist were IDOLS, a small group of musicians chose not to sign contracts with the big labels. One of these is Ohtaki Eiichi and "The Niagara Triangle". His music never appeared on the TV shows or on the big FM stations yet during the 80s every High School kid in Japan new of them. Their fame and success is totally do to their fans spreading the word. Basically, their songs were played late night on College and independent radio stations. Some one would stay up to record these songs then share them with their friends. Because they never appeared on TV, their are no music videos or Live performances available.

I found this story amazing because it proves people will go out of their way for quality music.

One of the first Idols to debute at an early age of 15. She won the NHK Utagasen that year.
Hori Chiemi (堀ちえみ) is a Japanese pop idol singer, talento, and former member of the pop unit Cutie★Mommy. Hori got her start in show business after winning the 6th Annual Hori Pro Scout Caravan in 1981. A year later, she debuted as a singer with the double A-side single "Shiokaze no Shoujo / Merci Boku". She later became an actress by starring in various television doramas like the dorama Stewardess Monogatari. But, she retired at the peak of her idol career in 1987 and move back to her hometown in Osaka to pursue a career in television news. Recently, she has performed at many live performances to celebrate her twenty fifth anniversary and to show off her new talent, tap dancing.

Kikkawa Koji

Kikkawa was the first to bring a stylized 'accent' to singing - Before him, singers just sang in their natural talking voice.
Kōji Kikkawa (吉川 晃司 Kikkawa Kōji?, born August 18, 1965 in Hiroshima) is a Japanese musician. His most recent album is 2009's Double-Edged Sword.[1]

Kōji was supposed to represent Japan in water polo in the coming Olympics but chose to be a singer. His music career began on February 1, 1984 with "Monica" (later remade in Cantonese sung by Leslie Cheung) and he won 8 music awards in the same year. After taking a short break in 1988, he came back as a lead singer in the band Complex with Tomoyasu Hotei (former guitarist of Boøwy) and "Be My Baby" was released. Complex remained as one of the most popular bands in Japan until 1990.

After "Complex", Kōji released series of hit singles such as "Setsunasa O Korosenai", "Kiss Ni Utarete Nemuritai" and "Boy's Life". Kōji completed a "20th Anniversary Tour" at Budokan on February 1, 2005.

Southern all Stars

This is the biggest Jpop band of all time. Southern All Stars (サザンオールスターズ Sazan Ōrusutaazu?), also known by the abbreviations Southern (サザン Sazan?) or SAS, is a Japanese pop/rock band that formed in the mid 1970s.

The band is composed of Keisuke Kuwata (lead vocals and guitars), Yuko Hara (vocals and keyboards), Kazuyuki Sekiguchi (bass), Hiroshi Matsuda (drums) and Hideyuki "Kegani" Nozawa (percussion). In addition to the present lineup, former guitarist Takashi Omori had worked in the band until 2001.[1][2]

After the contract with Victor Entertainment, the band released their top-ten charting debut single "Katte ni Sindbad" in 1977. Since then, Southern has been one of the best-selling music groups in the past 30 years of Japan, selling more than 47 million albums and singles in Japan alone. They have had over 40 top-ten hit singles and 16 number-one albums on the Japan's Oricon Charts as of 2008.[3]

Their 1998 compilation Umi no Yeah!! has sold more than 3.3 million copies[4] and became the best-selling double album in Japanese history.[5] Their most commercially successful song "Tsunami", released in 2000, has sold over 2.9 million units in Japan alone, and provided the band with honor of winning the 42nd Japan Record Awards.[6] The band were also acclaimed and ranked number one in HMV Japan's 2003 list of "100 most influential Japanese musicians".[7] They are also the only group to ever have 44 songs on the Oricon Top 100 weekly single chart simultaneously.[8]

The band has occasionally gone into hiatus while individual members work on solo and other projects, and are planning to do so again in 2009.[9][10]

Anzen Chitai

Anzen Chitai (安全地帯?, literally "Safety Zone") is a Japanese rock band, formed in 1973 by five musicians in Asahikawa, Hokkaidō, Japan. It debuted in 1982 in Tokyo, Japan. They became one of Japan's most successful rock bands in the 1980s.[1]

1970s: Beginnings

Formed in 1973 as the high-school garage band Invader in Asahikawa, Hokkaidō, its original members included vocalist Koji Tamaki, guitarist Yutaka Takezawa and guitarist/keyboardist Toshiya Takezawa, who is also Yutaka's brother. Later, in late 1973, Koji's brother and drummer, Kazuyoshi Tamaki and bassist Takahiro Miya$hita joined. In 1977, the band changed its name to Anzen Chitai ("Safety Zone"), and Kazuyoshi Tamaki left the group to be replaced by Ichiji Ohira. By December 1977, Anzen Chitai merged with another band, the Haruyoshi Rokudo Band (六土開正バンド Rokudō Haruyoshi Bando?), and added three more members: bassist Haruyoshi Rokudo, guitarist Wataru Yahagi, and drummer Yuji Tanaka. By this point, they had expanded to an eight-member group. Within the next three years, Toshiya Takezawa and Takahiro Miya$hita would leave. Yuji Tanaka would also leave at this point.
[edit] 1980s: Commercial success

In 1981, they began work as a backup band for singer-songwriter Yōsui Inoue, and released their debut single, "Moegi Iro no Snap" (萌黄色のスナップ Moegi Iro no Sunappu?) under the Kitty Records in February 1982. However, the final personnel change would occur as Ichiji Ohira would leave, and Yuji Tanaka would return in his place, establishing the current lineup.

Under the guidance of their producer and co-arranger Masaru Hoshi (星 勝 Hoshi Masaru?), lead guitarist and vocalist of the psychedelic rock group The Mops, the band continued to refine their craft in the studio. Their status as a backup band would soon change: in 1984, "Wine Red no Kokoro" (ワインレッドの心 Wain Reddo No Kokoro?, lit. Wine Red Heart) reached No. 1 on the Oricon charts, to be followed by among others, "Kanashimi ni Sayonara" (悲しみにさよなら) and "Suki Sa" (好きさ) (featured on the popular Rumiko Takahashi anime series Maison Ikkoku). "Wine Red no Kokoro" was composed by Koji Tamaki with lyrics by Yōsui Inoue. Koji Tamaki was credited as the sole composer in virtually all of Anzen Chitai's music, with Gorō Matsui being the lyricist frequently. Their popularity in the 1980s culminated in a five-day soldout concert tour at the Nippon Budokan in 1987, which had a total attendance of 60,000.

I think that Ozaki Yutaka (尾崎 豊) was an extremely popular rock singer in 80's and part of 90's.
Some of his famous songs included Jugo no Yoru - The Night (15の夜, 1983), Junanasai no Chizu - Seventeen's Map (十七歳の地図, 1984), Hajimari-sae Utaenai - Can't Sing Even the Beginning (はじまりさえ歌えない, 1984), Sotsugyou - Graduation (卒業, 1985), Driving All Night (1985), Kaku - Core (核, 1987), Taiyō no Hahen - Debris of the Sun(太陽の破片, 1988), Love Way (1990), Eien no mune - Eternal Heart (永遠の胸, 1991) and I Love You (1991)

Too bad that he died at so young age.

I love you by Ozaki Yukata

The same song has covered by South Korean actor, Song Seungheon in Korean in his Japan fan meeting.
He was OK but no one can beat the original, I guess.

Checkers

The Checkers (Japanese: チェッカーズ) was a Japanese pop/rock band famous in the 1980s. The band was formed by Toru Takeuchi, the leader and the guitarist, who asked Fumiya Fujii to start a band with him. They made a debut on 21 September 1983 and split up on 31 December 1992. All of their single releases entered top 10 in Japanese charts, many of them making it to No 1. Fumiya Fujii, who was the lead singer and the main lyricist, went on to pursue a successful solo career.

Although it was a band which produced their own songs, they were frequently regarded as just male aidoru by Japanese rock fans because of their early marketing promotion.[1]Wiki

My mother is a big Enka fan.

One of her most favorite Enka songs:

悲しい酒(kanashii sake) by 美空ひばり (Misora Hibari)

I admit that Mr. Kitajima is surely the King of Enka.

Oops, by the way, I accidentally put an "r" on the end of "vibrato." Of course, vibrato is Italian for vibration of the voice, and there is a big difference between that and vibrator. embarassedlaugh.gif

Without Knowing why, I am drawn in towards
The unadorned acting of actors in movies with unknown names
Why did I smile at the end ? I said and smiled
Thus talking only to me. Always
You, straining your ears
In your eyes that had become transparent black, what were you seeing ?

That day, even if I knew the meaning of your tears
We hurt each other
Even though I was frightened by the past where I didn't know you
It was meaningless and I understood

I don't have the strenght to change the world
And I don't have the courage to abandon the world
I was in the circle that was painted counter-clockwise
At the sun that swallowed a tiny plane
Squinting, you
With the white hand held over your head, what did you grasp ?

That day, even if I knew the meaning of your tears
We hurt each other
Even though I was frightened by the past where I didn't know you
It was meaningless and I understood

Making the cold atmosphere quiver
The repeating words fasten its entirety

That day, even if I knew the meaning of your tears
We hurt each other
Even though I was frightened by the past where I didn't know you
It was meaningless and I understood
The body that died that day
The heart that was born that day

The Brilliant Green

The Brilliant Green is a Japanese pop rock[2][3][4] band formed in 1997 who were signed to Sony Music Entertainment Japan. On December 1, 2009, The Brilliant Green announced that they had signed with Warner Music Group Japan.[5] The Brilliant Green take much of their influence from Western music, most predominantly The Beatles,[6] with over half their songs including English lyrics. Their break came in 1998 when their third single, "There Will Be Love There," was chosen as the theme song for the popular Japanese Drama Love Again and, as a result, went straight to the top of the charts. After another number one hit with "Tsumetai Hana" they released their self-titled debut album which sold over one million copies in just two days.[citation needed] On the back of this success their first national tour, titled "There Will Be Love There," sold out across Japan in only three minutes.[7]

In 2001, Time magazine chose The Brilliant Green as one of the top ten contemporary acts outside the U.S.[8] for their "Los Angeles" album. In 2001, Tomoko Kawase started a solo project under the name Tommy February6.

After the release of The Winter Album in 2002, the band members moved on to solo projects, but the group never officially broke up. Kawase continued as a solo artist under the names Tommy February6 and Tommy Heavenly6. Matsui also started a new project called Meister. On November 22, 2003, Kawase and Okuda announced their marriage.

On June 1, 2007, it was announced that after five years of inactivity, The Brilliant Green would be returning with a new single to celebrate their 10th anniversary. The song, titled "Stand By Me," was selected as the ending theme for the new series of TV drama, Detective School Q, which began on July 3, 2007. The comeback began in earnest on August 22, 2007, as the new single hit the stores.

The band appeared in their first proper live show since their comeback by playing at the Iwafune Mountain Cliff Stage on October 21, 2007. This performance was part of the Iwafune Cliff Stage Special 2007 with The Brilliant Green appearing alongside other musical acts including DxD, Sowelu, and Viagrade.

The second single release of their comeback, "Enemy," was released on December 12, 2007. The following single, titled "Ash Like Snow" appears as an opening theme in the anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam 00. On February 20, 2008 a compilation album titled Complete Singles Collection '97-'08 was released. The band has also mentioned in an online interview that a new studio album is currently in the works, consisting of previously unrecorded songs that were written over the previous ten years.[9]

Following the release of their compilation album in February 2008, the group's 18th single, "Like Yesterday" was released on February 2, 2010. It featured a rearrangement of a previous single, "Sono Speed de" that was re-written in English, titled "At Light Speed". It was their first single since 2008's "Ash Like Snow". It was their second-lowest selling single since 2007's "Enemy".

On May 5, 2010, it was announced that guitarist and original member Ryo Matsui had left The Brilliant Green. His reasons for leaving were not stated, but Kawase and Okuda are to continue the group as a duo.

The Brilliant Green's fifth album, "Blackout", was released on September 15, 2010.[10]

^You understand those lyrics? Cool, your Japanese is good. biggthumpup.gif

embarassedlaugh.gif Thank you but I think that I am flattered.
There were a few Japanese Kanji that I didn't quite understand....pronunciation and meaning
Luckily, my Japanese friend was kind enough to add Hiragana and rephrased those idioms for me.

70-80's Japanese songs are best.
At least, to me.

I am an odd-ball who likes these type of songs, especially furusato (hometown) songs.

You're not odd. I like enka too. We have our own style in Taiwan too.

秋風夜雨 was written in 1954 by 楊 三郎 (Yong Samlon). A young girl still sang it in 2009 in a contest.
