Agnes Monica Promises The Best at Stadium Negara 23 Jun

Several cancellations of concerts by Indonesian artists and moderate popularity of Agnes Monica in Malaysia even though her songs Tak Ada Logika and Bilang Saja have been frequently airing in local radio stations, cannot take her spirit away to perform in the ‘Agnes Monica Live in Kuala Lumpur’.

Will be opening at stadium Negara on 23Jun at 8.30pm sharp, Agnes always keeps her positive thought, and the opportunity before her eyes should be clutched since it has been her dream to make a name in foreign countries.

Although she’s just made 2 albums “And The Story Goes…” in 2003 and “Whaddup A!?” in 2005, the singer who also renown as an actress, was convinced she has enough materials to entertain thousands of her fans in one concert.

“I don’t think that much how many of my songs are popular in here because I only think of how to give my best performance for my first solo concert. In my career there’s no such underperformance saying,” she said.

Her eagerness convinced Boyz II Men to collaborate with her when they held a concert in Jakarta recently. In fact, this group also encouraged Agnes to record an English album.

Agnes said she didn’t want to make any hasty decision. At this time her English album is still in process and Agnes herself has flown to America for this. However, Agnes said, her heart is always be for Indonesia.

“I’ve managed my career and my fans for years. I would never throw them away just like that. I don’t want to rush myself because everything hasn’t settled yet. I would be so proud if I could bring the name of Indonesia and Asia in the west.

“I want them to see the ability of Asians because we’ve got so many talents that can make a par internationally. I should be there with mature thought.

As a person who’s been known as a perfectionist, Agnes postponed her study at the second year because she wanted to focus on her goal and kept her health for that. Tight singing and dance sessions, continued with the shooting schedules, has made her family felt sympathy, seeing her ‘torments’ herself to get the triumphant.

“There’s one message from my family I never forget which is: if I want to go international, I need to focus. If I can give 50% of myself for my career in here, what would that be in the future if I could give 100% fullest? It all needs sacrifice.

“I should choose to postpone my study. But learning never stops and it never distinguishes age. I’ll continue my study when the time arrives, eventually,” said her wisely. Agnes always gets the CGPA more than 3.5 every semester.

^ So I heard. It was a success but some said the capacity of the stadium was too big while there were only "3,000" viewers watching the concert. But overall it was great and she got good reviews. Here they are:

Agnes Monica Gives Star Performance
Agnes Monica, 21 year old pretty lass from Jakarta gave an otherwise star performance at Stadium Negara, Saturday evening to a crowd of about 10,000 people mostly teenagers. The show started around 9.30pm and went on for about two hours much to the enjoyment of the crowd who kept clapping, singing and cheering on the singer.

It was an energy packed, very physical show where this singer cum actress sang, danced and moved a lot on stage showing her youthful exuberance and enthusiasm.

She wore a black and gold blouse and tight-fitting black pants with knee high grey boots giving the show a western look. She sang her favourites from her album in Malay and English for a full two hours many times recharging herself with mineral water.

The stage props and lighting were good. And so was the band. But due to the poor acoustics at the stadium, the musical left much to be desired. The sound was a little muffled and with the annoying echoes, the concert was not outstanding.

Agnes Monica Muljoto, started her career at the age of 6 as host of a children's TV show and as a singer. Her first album was not a big hit in Indonesia since at that time not many children bought cassettes of child singers.

At the age of 12, she entered acting world. "Lupus Milenia" was her first series. Although not too successful, the series led her to other series that were big hits in Indonesia (and later on in Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei). "Pernikahan Dini" (2001) had won many prestigious awards including Best Newcomer and Best Actress in a Drama Series. Since then she has acted in numerous series in leading roles.

In 2003 she released her first album called "And The Story Goes...". It was a big success in Indonesia and Malay speaking countries. The singles such as "Bilang Saja," "Jera," and "Cinta Mati" became instant hits. In 2005 she released her next album "Whaddup A...!"

She has acted in two Taiwanese series: Romance in the White House (with Peter Ho) and The Hospital (with Jerry Yan).

In addition to Bahasa Indonesia and English she speaks Mandarin.

Age is with Agnes and with more exposure and experience she has a bright and successful future ahead. She is talented and with good advises and management could take on more tours of Asia and the world.

Agnes Monica Fabulous Concert, Fewer Viewers

By Nor Fadzilah Baharudin

Agnes Great

Eventhough the fans in Malaysia were not as many as in other places, yet kudos should be given to this 20 years old singer.

Two hours singing and dancing on the stage is not an easy thing. But this singer victoriously proofed her magnitude.

Performed with her bands The Innocent, and with 12 dancers, Agnes opened the concert with her hits Bilang Saja. It was a fantastic performance. The dance and the singing was package in a compelling show. Having 3 segments for this show, which were R&B, Ballad and Rock, it seemed the audiences were up and down with their own moods.

This might be because most of the viewers didn’t familiar with most of the songs. Singing almost 20 songs including Ku Disini, Tanpa Kekasih, Malu Tapi Mau, Tak Bisa and Pernikahan Dini, nearly everyone only gave response when Agnes sang upbeat songs than the ballad ones.

She was clever in using the strategy of opening and closing the concert with her popular songs. For the opening she picked song Bilang Saja while for the closing she sang Tak Ada Logika.

Crowded Along The Concert

There were some chaos disturbing along the concert, two of them happened among the audiences in front of the stage. The securities went within and hushed them away.
Not enough with it, when the concert was going on, suddenly a bunch of fans swarmed into the stadium vigorously.

Maybe that’s Agnes’ charmed that could make fans willing to crack just to see her concert.
****

Agnes’ Shaky Amazes
Only three songs which popular in this country: Ku Tlah Jatuh Cinta, Bilang Saja and Tak Ada Logika. Ku T’lah Jatuh Cinta started its stardom when it became the theme song for her drama with the same title.

VCD Ku T’lah Jatuh Cinta has been sold since 2 years ago in Malaysia and ever since then her name with other 2 actors became popular in here.

Yet with the popularity of this song, some people who watched her concert in Kuala Lumpur, at the Stadium Negara, last Saturday, felt less enjoyment since this song was presented along with other unpopular songs.

However, the lack of this thing didn’t scratch the concert of this beautiful and wise lady. Her experience, high confidence and outstanding powerful vocal covered it up.

It’s not an over-compliment, but she has successfully shown a powerful performance, and her charisma as the most famous teen singer in her country was puffed up. From 15 of her songs, most of them were performed with dynamic dance that needed lots of power. The sharpness of her showmanship was emphasized more with the 12 dancers who exclusively brought from Indonesia.

Her attractive steps and dances have entertained audiences’ eventhough there were several songs that have never been heard before.

At that night, Agnes sang Bilang Saja, Dan Tak Mungkin, Pernikahan Dini, Indah, Ku T’lah Jatuh Cinta, Tanpa Kekasih, What They Called Soulmate, Ini Gila Ini Cinta, Get Up, Bukan Milikmu Lagi, Ku Di Sini, Cinta Di Ujung Jalan, Tak Bisa and Tak Ada Logika.

Agnes also obeyed the regulation of wardrobe where she wore costume differently than the original image in her country. It’s understandable, since Agnes was touted as Indonesian Britney Spears with the sexy image. But that night she wore long pants, appropriate blouse and boots.

It’s very natural considering her action was to get the heart of audiences from a country where she should understand the sensitivity of local society. She needs to sense the timing, the does and the don’ts.

Apart from the technical difficulty in sound system, she said infront of the media 30 minutes after the concert, that overall she felt satisfy with the audiences.
“If there was an error, it was just the sound echoed in the stadium which was out of the plan. However I still satisfy because my bands, my dancers and I did the best we could.

“The spontaneous reaction from the audiences when I sang added up my satisfaction too. Actually this concert is opened to anybody either they’re from Malaysia or Indonesia.

“Judging from the video that was recorded by my personal cameraman, it’s obvious that the Malaysian viewers are so lively too. Most important thing is everyone who came this night is music lover. When I asked them to sing, they sang, but most of them only knew the songs Bilang Saja and Tak Ada Logika because I know it’s pretty hard to get my CD in here,” she said.

Agnes gave her secret of the ability to dance without ruining her voice. She said since she was 17 years old she has practiced physical exercise. And now she’s almost 21, she never stops the physical exercise for 4 years.

“Besides having our body fit from exercise, I also practice a good healthy life, don’t smoke, don’t drink alcohol and don’t go the night clubs. I also have always enough sleep.

“As a singer, the voice is the most important thing. That’s why we must take care of our health. Before holding this concert I was quiet doubtful because I just had a sour-throat.
“Luckily, tonight I could sing very well. This is also because of God’s hands,” she said.

Agnes also said, for the sake of the concert, she, the bands and the dancers discussed about how to get the best. There’s no selfishness or dependent on one particular individual because the successful of the concert lies on all the people who get involve.
She’s initially love to dance. So it’s not hard for her to sing and dance altogether.

“Through the dancing, the visual of my performance will look prettier. And due to my performance in this concert, as a good entertainer I should review the difference between our countries, whether my costume would be fit or not. We must be sensitive with the local society.

“I also feel blessed because ever since I active in this business, my brother, Steve, has been managed my career from the scratch until I got successful as today,” said her.

As usual, before the concert began, some artists were invited to sing as the opening show. Once again, Malaysian artists became “the prey” in their own country.

Agnes Monica Admits Living inside a Glass Bowl
By: Suzan Ahmad

Showbiz world for her is not a playground. It takes a lot to get succeed. The childhood, the teen-age, the freedom and the normal living like anyone else. She’s just about 21 years old yet her experience in artsy world has been 17 years!

A big challenge for her when being famous in Indonesia doesn’t mean popular either in Malaysia, in fact Agnes preparation for her big concert in here, last night (23 Jun) at the Stadium Negara, Kuala Lumpur was proved has stunned and full of uniqueness and energetic fiesta.

"We’ve got a specific preparation and well-organized. Visually and musically it should be different than the sounds in the album. For that we didn’t only need physical training but also mental preparation,” said the singer who has released 2 album which are ‘...And The Story Goes’ and ‘Whaddup, A?!’

Bright conversation described the mentality of this undergraduate law school student of Pelita Harapan University. Apparently she is a child prodigy – wise, beautiful and talented. Just imagine, between her hectic activities in acting for dramas, film, advertisements, performing and singing; she still reached bright marks in her study.

"Till one day my family realized I had fewer break. I got a problem with my health too. Then they gave me a choice. If I wanted to pursue my dream and could manage it well, I need to focus. For that, I decided to postpone my study for a while and focus to develop my talent to the higher level stage,” explained the girl who’s trying so hard to break American market.

"That’s a big dream and almost impossible to reach. What I do now is just keep trying hard and pray, so that the opportunity will knock and at the same time I prepare myself to ensure that I’m apt to go international which does not just bring Indonesia title but also Asia in general,” she said.

Agnes who sometimes being labeled as Indonesia’s Britney Spears because of her taste in fashion and surprising image, started to stardom after she played in drama Pernikahan Dini. She and her family happened to get labeled as hard to get and that her attitude wasn’t friendly. Furthermore, some people said she forgot where she belongs. In fact, these comments never reduce her passion in art that’s been deep-rooted for long time.

"People will never stop talking about us even when we become the public figure. We live in a glass bowl. Each of our moves draws attention. But I believe, it’s all there just to make me stronger and ready for anything that could happened in the future,” she explained confirmly.

Do you know why is that so? I thought she is popular in Malaysia?? Or was it because of overestimation?
furansizuka
It's because the overestimation, methinks. They shudn't made it in a stadium with 200,000 capacity. She's popular as a n actress but not as a singer. The major hits are only Ku Tlah Jatuh Cinta and Tak Ada Logika since these are theme songs for sinetrons.

futhermore, people dont want to waste money just to enjoy 2 songs.....they will get bored easily because they dont know any other songs...most of the vievwers are indonesian immigrants while malaysians are less than 1000....the others are all indon...

but the paper said she put up a good show.especially her dance...

well, u know better than me 'coz you live there icon_smile.gif
but this remind me of las ketchup when they performed in indo with inul (is this correct?) as an opening act.
indon only knew 1 song from las ketchup which is 'asereje' and the audience got bored.
i heard that the audience enjoy the opening act more than las ketchup haha

no offence...but really, when i look at this youtube video which shows agnes arrival at KL airport, i wanted to laugh
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpPAI4foiyg
cause media (both indon & msian) wrote how popular is she and how big the msia concert was going to be and yet the greeting and welcome from the msian fans at the airport are like as if she's not "as big as" how the media wrote.
i was quite surprised though and especially after she's outside the airport, and she had to wait for quite sometime to get into the car. well, to my opinion, if you're a big star, a car will be waiting out there for the artist instead of the other way round.

i think agnes should do a big solo concert in jakarta first (which she hasn't done yet till now - quite disappointing)

that's only my opinion...

yeap, i agree Nia is pretty (though not very smart - that's what I heard icon_smile.gif ) Lots of guy will love her
furansizuka
I don't know about 'gadismelayusejati' overview, but according to my malaysian friends, she's very popular as actress but not as a singer and that actually the concert was a success performance-wise. Yet I agree that she's not that big as the malaysian and indonesian media wrote.

And yeah I agree with pink_panther that she should have a big concert in Jakarta first icon_smile.gif
gadismelayusejati
yes furan, malaysian media and me said she's good in peformance but the sambutan is so dissapointing....popular actress???only one freaking sinetron that got here.ku tlah jatuh cinta..how big that could ever get??

malaysian media never wrothe that she's super popular here but always wrote that she's super popular in indonesia....they always described agnes as 'penyanyi yang semakin meningkat naik kepopularitiannya di malaysia dengan lagu tak ada logika dan bla bla bla ' . never ever described her as a popular actress.just as a girl who also act...

maybe your malaysian friends love her so much and her that one sinetron so much that they don't really realised what other 27 millions thought about her..

nia is so popular here that all her 3 sinetrons here got the highest ratings.........girls envy her and want to look like her..men just you know........
even revalina s temat is not that big here

anyway nia is stupid???how stupid????? embarassedlaugh.gif

If I remember correctly, when I first come here last quarter 2005, Agnes was virtually unknown. But her "Tak Ada Logika" became quite popular around mid 2006 --she was like, everywhere on the radio.
I read a very interesting opinion piece somewhere that it has something to do with Siti Nurhaliza's wedding, happened to be around that time embarassedlaugh.gif Agnes --at least her image in media-- is quite the antithesis of Siti Nurhaliza; and her wedding to Datuk K much upset quite a few Malaysians. A quite probable analysis, I'd say.
Agnes is able to ride on that wave and had some more success with other singles, but I don't think Malaysians understand Agnes well. Certainly not in the current situation. They don't know what to make of her: a lady singer that looks like Chinese and stars in Chinese series (I know it's Taiwan, but we're not enforcing One China Policy here, right?), yet sings and speaks fluently in Malay --or at least an obvious "variation" (from Malays point of view) to it. For us it's irrelevant, but for them it remains puzzling: is she Chinese or Malay?
One more thing: it looks like Malaysians see her exclusively as a "rocker" --you know, it that 90's meaning of the word-- and I couldn't blame them, considering "Whaddup, A?"-s cover, hence only her songs having that style is well received here.
I don't think gadis' opinion that only Indonesians in Malaysia like Agnes is right. She's been popular enough in Indonesia for some time; if her fan base is Indonesians here she should have been popular much earlier. And I don't believe Indonesians here have that much sway over the local music market: if so, Iwan Fals would have been at least as popular as Ungu, and Titi Kamal would have been a household name by now. I can tell you they're not.

One caution, though: I live in East Malaysia.

so, how's this 'go international' things going on?
It seems that she'll still be in Indonesia for at least until end of this month?
I recalled her saying that she'll be going to US by mid of this year?

when she said international, does she mean US or Europe? i dont think she's gonna have much success in the US.
Grandmaster C
