Album baru Agnes Monica yang dirilis Desember tahun lalu seakan menjadi jawaban dari title albumnya sendiri, Whaddup A? Jawaban atas sosok Agnes yang semakin pintar, dewasa dan berani menampilkan egonya. Ia mulai menampik sosoknya sebagai teen bubblegum pop queen dalam industri dengan cara terlibat lebih jauh dalam proses penggarapan albumnya sendiri.
“Menurut gue ini satu growth juga buat gue. Di album ini ada satu lirik lagu yang gue tulis sendiri. Aransemen lead vokal dengan backing vokalnya juga gue yang bikin,” ujarnya bersemangat, seraya menambahkan bahwa ia terlibat pula dalam proses mixing di studio hingga pembuatan story line bagi video klip yang ia tulis sendiri. “Hopefully, gue pengennya bisa ngasih suguhan yang lebih Agnes. Sense of belonging di album ini lebih ‘gue banget’”.
Di album yang menampilkan satu lagu berduet dengan penyanyi Keith Martin ini tetap menyajikan musik pop sebagai menu utama. “Cuma popnya seperti apa? Apakah pop rock, pop R&B, pop blues?” lanjutnya “Gue nggak pengen mengkotak-kotakkan, cukup di pop. Maksudnya gini, nggak semua lagu R&B itu bagus juga kan? Pokoknya nggak bisa kita generalized mentang-mentang R&B artinya bagus semua. Nggak bisa gitu juga kan?”

Agnes kecil tumbuh dengan musik klasik. “Gue punya volume suara dan power yang cukup besar ketika menyanyi. Itu semua gue dapat dari musik klasik,” ujarnya. Berangkat dari lingkungan keluarga yang religiositasnya tinggi, Agnes kecil kemudian mengenal gospel dan sering bernyanyi di gereja. “Kemudian gue mengenal R&B dan jatuh cinta dengan lagu jazz dan lagu blues. Kok kayaknya lebih meresap ke hati, gitu loh,” Agnes menambahkan. “Gue merasa sisi gue di bidang musik makin berkembang dan gue makin banyak dengerin referensi lagu, makin banyak berdiskusi dengan orang dan pada akhirnya terbentuklah Agnes Monica yang sekarang.”
Ray
Agnes Monica dengan bangga menyebut Ray Charles, legenda musik R&B sebagai “kakeknya”. Kesibukan syuting sinetron menyebabkan ia belum menuntaskan sepenuhnya DVD Ray yang dibintangi peraih Oscar, Jamie Foxx. Belum lama ini ia baru saja membeli sebuah boxset yang berjudul Genius & Soul: The 50th Anniversary of Ray Charles. “Gue seneng banget tuh pas dapet [boxset]. Wah, ada kakek gue,” ujarnya gembira. Selain Ray Charles ia merasa cukup tergila-gila dengan Ernestine Anderson, Carmen McRae, Alicia Keys hingga Jill Scott.
Deep Impact
Tak banyak mantan penyanyi cilik yang kembali ke masa lalu seoptimis Agnes Monica. Beberapa dari mereka bahkan menjadi inferior atau minder ketika beranjak dewasa. “Gue hidup untuk sekarang dan masa depan kok, masa lalu itu cukup dijadikan pengalaman dan bukan sesuatu yang tabu untuk dibicarakan”. Agnes beranggapan bahwa hidupnya tidak akan seperti ini jika ia tidak ber-Tralala-Trilili. “Jadi kenapa mesti malu kalo gue dibilang mantan penyanyi cilik? ‘Emang gue mantan penyanyi cilik, so what gitu?” ujarnya penuh semangat, “Kamu nggak usah malu dengan pengalaman masa lalu. Toh itu juga satu bagian dari hidup kamu juga. Sebagai proses!”
School of Rock
Agnes mengaku dirinya tidak pernah mengenyam bangku “School of Rock”. “Gue nggak pernah dengerin rock. Serius!” tukasnya meyakinkan. Ia menambahkan bahwa selera musiknya bukan lagu-lagu keras. Bahkan kepentingannya dengan musik rock hanya untuk keperluan show. “Yang penting untuk naikin adrenalin aja”. Kontras dengan kakak kandung sekaligus personal manajernya, Steve, yang sempat menggandrungi Metallica. Band paling rock yang sempat Agnes dengarkan berasal dari masa-masa sulit musik rock; Linkin Park dan Limp Bizkit. Seringai? “Uh, yang mana tuh? Itu Seringai apa sih? Lagunya kayak gimana sih? Jangan-jangan gue pernah dengar lagunya tapi gue nggak tahu.”
Bai Se Ju Ta [The Hospitals]
Agnes mengaku bangga bisa menjadi satu-satunya artis Indonesia yang ikut berperan di serial drama terbesar di Taiwan saat ini, Bai Se Ju Ta alias “The Hospitals” yang disutradarai Cai Yue Xun (sutradara Meteor Garden). Di serial TV yang syutingnya berlokasi di rumah sakit ini ia bermain dengan eks-Tao Ming Se yang juga personel F4, Jerry Yan. “Syuting The Hospitals itu gila, karena hampir di setiap scene-nya gue nangis,” ujar Agnes seraya menambahkan bahwa aktingnya menuai pujian khusus dari Jerry Yan. “Ia ngedatengin gue terus bertanya, ‘gimana sih caranya bisa akting sampai kayak gitu, saya mesti belajar juga dari kamu nih, jujur saja saya nggak bisa akting nangis terlalu bagus’,” cerita Agnes. Pujian tak hanya datang dari Jerry, sutradara Cai Yue Xun juga melontarkan pujian. “Dia bilang, ‘saya sudah bekerjasama dengan begitu banyak artis dan kamu adalah salah satu yang terbagus’. Setelah kerja keras, gue kayak disiram air dingin gitu,” ujar Agnes penuh semangat. Selama syuting serial ini Agnes menggunakan bahasa Mandarin yang secara khusus dipelajarinya. “Bahasa Mandarin itu susah banget. If you could imagine the hardest, that’s it. The hardest language ever! Conversation-nya aja gokil, susah banget.”

Jika Anda muda dan senang nongkrong maka Anda sudah pasti tercoret dari list seorang Agnes Monica. Berbahagialah mereka yang berlebih umur. Age does matter here karena Agnes menyukai “daun tua”. “Itu kenapa pada akhirnya cowok gue itu kebanyakan orang yang jauh di atas gue, 10 tahun, 12 tahun di atas gue,” ungkap Agnes. “Gue lebih suka sama orang yang punya kerjaan, yang udah ngerti kerja itu gimana,” tambah Agnes berapi-api. “Daripada orang yang masih…[menghela napas] setiap hari mau nongkrongin aja, males banget kan.” Sayangnya, tak lama setelah itu ia mengaku “cukup enjoy dengan being alone”.
Mission Impossible
Go international adalah prioritas utama Agnes Monica saat ini. Sangat klise, karena selain Anggun hingga sekarang Indonesia justru lebih banyak mencetak artis-artis yang bermimpi go international dibanding benar-benar berkaliber internasional. Agnes menentang keras dengan argumentasi cerdas, “Kenapa kita nggak mencoba dulu? Gue nggak suka kalo terlalu terpentok dengan paradigma yang bilang kalo orang-orang kulit kuning nggak mungkin diterima di luar negeri, apalagi di negara-negara barat.” Hal terpenting menurutnya sekarang adalah “making a progress” dan tidak “stuck” di tempat. “Gue bisa berakting bareng Jerry Yan, gue pikir itu progress yang cukup besar bagi diri gue pribadi,” Agnes mencontohkan. “Di dunia nyanyi gue udah berduet dengan Keith Martin. Walau belum didistribusikan di luar negeri tapi paling tidak, I’m making a progress.” Well, at least, anak ini memiliki visi yang lebih jelas dibanding mereka yang hanya bermodal lirik Inggris. “Sekarang – selain Anggun -- kenapa nggak ada orang-orang lain? Gue mau menjadi salah satu yang bisa ikut go international,” tandasnya.

the song is about she dumped the boyfriend (based on true story). So it’s the other way around. The boy is manifested as one of the policeman. (She said her ex was like a cop, trying to hold her back and demanded permission of everything she wanted to do). I think the factory and etc is just the set to support the atmosphere of rebel and freedom.

Agnes Monica to 4 Cities Road Show
Prior to her first solo concert designed on next July, Agnes Monica heating up by presenting a road show called ‘Play up Concert Tour 2006’. Brings a theme ‘Clasnezenzation with Agnes Monica – New Album in 4 Cities’, the cities she’s heading are Lampung, Surabaya, Bandung and Makassar. Yet Agnes declined the road show being called as a heat up because it sounds jesting as she said.
In supporting her form of seriousness, 5 containers will be utilized to maximize the show. The containers will carry a knockdown stage, lighting system, sound system, multimedia and costumes. The EO promised the concert would be different than any other concerts ever. And they will make it thematically.
As to the preparation, Agnes has been doing physical training in recent months. Along with all her dancers, the undergraduate law school student of UPH go jogging round the stadium Senayan, 3-4 times a week for 45 minutes nonstop. All for the sake of perfect gig. “I don’t want myself, alone, to present well, but also all my dancers and the band,” explained Agnes in press conference @ Manchester United Café, Monday (30/1).
Setting up to bring 10 songs from her 2 albums, the 19 years old girl has prepared the costumes as well. Japanese styled, the costumes will be adjusted to the songs she’ll perform. However Agnes will keep her feminine side yet energetic.
In respond the concert itself, Agnes felt so enthusiasm seeing as the show in 4 cities as advantage of go on to other cities in addition. “I am very enthusiasm because this is one of my biggest tours, from the performance, stage to the well prepared concept”, said the owner of hits ‘Bilang Saja’.
For your information, Agnes is going to perform solo without any guest stars. Nevertheless, rumors said there would be a guest star in one of those cities.

Single ‘Tak Ada Logika’ is leading on #1 chart Brunei radio stations and ‘Bukan Milikmu Lagi’ is on a Malaysian radio chart lately.

woow...go agnes...but it will be better if she promotes in bigger country...come on..brunei is so small..u cant sell ur album there...malaysia is ok but not enough for her ambition to go int'l....i think she has to promote in Japan,Korea,taiwan,etc.I think Language barrier is not a problem...,there's so many singer from those country became famous here...like Utada Hikaru..F4....Boa...Rain..
