A once-esteemed Vietnamese actor, Don Duong recently has performed in American films. He starred in "Green Dragon" (2001) as a refugee who leaves South Vietnam before its conquest in 1975. ("Green Dragon" depicts the "first wave" of over 100,000 refugees in 1975. Two million more would flee Vietnam.) In last year's "We Were Soldiers," Duong played a North Vietnamese colonel in the 1965 Battle of Ia Drang.

Actually there are elections in Vietnam. The qualifier is that the only people who can run must be Communist Party approved. There is only one party so the government’s slate of candidates are the only one who can win. This also goes for elevation to the priesthood or a high position in the Catholic Church. Despite guaranteeing freedom of religion in its bylaw the communist government take an active role in selecting who can become a priest or minister; one also must be party approved. This oppression is not only against Christians but also Buddhists. Buddhists monks have burned themselves alive in the past to protest Communist oppression. Others Buddhist leaders were forced to flee the country.

An update on Don Duong. He recently went on Asia Entertainment’s latest video to denounce the communist government. On watching the same version of this video in Vietnam the part where Don Duong made his appearance was conveniently left out.

I also recently visited Vietnam and took the opportunity to watch Vietnamese television. Every 15 minutes in between shows, there is a propaganda commercial by the government. It shows the brave Cong San fighting to liberate their “oppressed” South Vietnamese brothers. You saw brave images from the Vietnam War of professionals soldiers in uniforms, jumping from helicopters, tanks, and marching in formation. The commercial accidentally forgot to mention those were images of the South Vietnamese military. Opps.

Then I also saw lots of households in the countryside and in the city flying communists flags. I thought, wow, they must really love their country. Then I went in and talked to these average everyday citizens. They told me that cronies working for communists officials actually go around telling people to fly the flag. They tell me they do it more out of fear than for love of country. You know a government is a failure if it has to coerce its people to love it.

Please go back to Vietnam for yourself and see the beautiful elegant women, the scenery and observe the corruption and hard life that our people live under. Such a noble people deserve better than a corrupt, inefficient government that exploit them and rule by fear rather than justice and law.

There was site dedicated to this theme and the movie "we were warriors" and other wars.

When I corrected the purposefully made and left in grammar mistakes and posted it there. Of course it was only one post and only an excerpt, then I stood back and watched these people chanted about the film but fell silent on my excerpt. After a few months the site claimed that there was a virus attack or some hacker got in and closed the site down. I did not save anything since I thought it would stay a bit longer , but it was funny seeing how these "warriors" had nothing to say about my post then closed the whole site down . Some guys said they had saved every threads and offered to upload it, but offer was not taken and the site got pulled . Some suggested I should post my thread on BBC, but that forum there was and still is so horriblly disorganised: any threads can be burried quickly, so I didn't bother.

Now this is real warriors' stuff . Don't know why communist Vietnam is worried about this film when my excerpt of a simple thread at the very early time in the debate shut the whole site and other similar sites down . The more they raise fuss about this film the more something it seems they got to hide . But the communists can not enter into any dialogue anyway : they too got something to hide.

Now you can not find any forums that say: "We Were Warriors".

We were murderers and rapists and liars and deniers more like it.

Any forums about Vietnam war or other wars and history let me know; I will see how good the site is.
