Sometimes when i hear Tagalog, it sounds a bit like Indonesian and some of the words are the same but have completely different meanings....such as 'mahal kita'...in Indo it means literally 'expensive us'

The word "mahal" have 2 different meanings depending on usage. It could mean love as in mahal kita ( I Love You) or it could mean expensive as in mahal ang mga alahas na ito (This jewelries are expensive.)

Yes, the word "Mahal" has two meanings!

Well Filipino dialects is part of "Malayo -Polynesian" language family, so some words are the same with Indonesia or Malaysia

Like: lima-lima -five
kambing-kambing-goat
Lalaki-lelaki-male(bahasa indonesia)
ako/aku-aku-me

hoy=hey ....it is used to call the attention of a person, not as a greeting like hi....

oh ok... i never get used to it to greet my friends... i think its kinda offensive (for me) to some extent, but i rather say uuuyyy because it's little bit sweeter than hoy......

lol, it's kinda awkward to greet someone 'mabuhay' as a way of saying hi. I thought it's mostly said when people are on tv and stuff.
cuteangelika
We usually say "Kamusta" or its shortened form, "Musta" when saying Hi... icon_smile.gif

Wow Ek-ek, you know Bahasa already? How long have u been learning the language? Ako, gusto ko rin matuto pero konti pa lang alam ko... icon_smile.gif
filipinoy
so this means we really don't have a real word for 'hi'?

lol i guess...

there probably is a filipino word for hi but it's probably a really long word so it fell out of use.

Since in philippines there are many dialects some may use diff. ways to say hello. Batak speakers say "horas" . Visayan speakers say "maqayu". Ilongo speakers say "Maayo". See following on saying hello in 800 languages:

the meaning is the same but " Iniibig kita " is deeper tagalog. I think it's english translation is " I'm in love with you"

sorry I'm a little bit confused. When you say deeper tagalog you mean its an old time word that hardly used anymore?

I Thought "I love you" is different from "i'm in love with you" confused.gif

sorry 'bout the confusion icon_wink.gif
when I said deeper tagalog I meant both in a way that it's hardly used anymore and it's a deeper way of saying I love you.. at least that's how they used it in classic movies :P

about the " I'm in love with you " thing... that's what I think.. that doesn't mean that I'm right embarassedlaugh.gif2
