The 양놈 annoy the crap outta me, too. I avoid them whenever possible, but I'm stuck working with a few. Loud, obnoxious, arrogant...Most of them have lived in Korea for years, some have Korean spouses, and yet they refuse to learn the freaking language or figure out how society works. Sometimes I wish they'd all go away and I'd be the only foreigner over here. I am not joking.

But how does a foreigner teach English if they don't speak the local language?

Poorly, usually. icon_wink.gif

I use a lot of comparative grammar when I teach, but I teach in a university, so my students are better able to deal with it. It's frowned upon for foreign instructors to speak too much Korean in class.

When I want to teach vocabulary, I write the Korean word on the board in 한글 and pronounce the English. I also tell my students that if they don't know how to say something in English, they can say it in Korean and I'll translate for them.

For those who don't speak Korean at all, though, I'd guess that they just don't get as much across to their students and simplify their tests to reflect this.

There are obnoxious frat boy kinds but I've seen many cool cats or mature lifers, too. The OP didn't have to bring that creepy mofo's name.
hapkido1996
Yeah, the ones I know who are pretty cool are low-profile, so they're not represented much by the media.

Doggyi, do you live in korea?, and did you learn english there. Just curious.

I really doubt if kaizen meant that literally. Probably just letting out some exasperation. At least, I hope so. Anyway, it would be really, really hard to get guns and ammo over here. Not impossible, but really, really difficult.

(Bacon is what is right with the universe. Praise the lard.)

In regards to the OP, Im not sure what ESL people act like in Korea... But im thinking if they go to Korea they should learn as much as they can about Korea, and learn Korean... They should also respect the ways and laws of Korea.... If not then stay wherever they came from....

For every 1 bad ESL teacher, there are 5 that have brought so many positives to the country. Moreover, for many ESLs their experience in Korea has touched their lives. Let's keep things in perspective shall we. Being ignorant will only lead to stagnation. Korea's performance has been due to progressiveness and so it shall continue.

How many positives could ESL teachers bring to South Korea? I mean they're just there to teach English. What another positives could there be? I mean engineers, for example, and other more intellectual and demanding jobs brings more benefits to a country.

I'm just curious though, granted I don't know much about the benefits of ESL teachers to South Korea.

Kathleen Stephens, the current U.S. ambassador to S Korea was an English teacher in Korea 36 years ago. She's also one of the few ambassadors to Korea whose Korean language skill is at native level, along with Japanese ambassador, Masatoshi Muto. She has thousand of Korean friends including her former faculties. Her ex husband was also a Korean.

Her term of service in Korea will be expired soon. Kim Sung, a Korean American might be a next U.S. ambassador to S Korea.

And do you have stats to prove any different? Are there actually stats for that sort of thing?

The truth is people are getting their opinions from personal experience with ESL teaching expats, through online blogs and such, or from thin air.

Which opinion would you prefer to hear?
Captain Corea
So you've got an OP using the word 'faggot' and hoping for the mass killing of people. And you've got some posters cheering and supporting it...

And your issue with with some anecdotal statistics?

Hmmmmmmmm

Cheering for mass killing vs. Anecdotal statistics

Yeah, I can see which side a reasonable person would take issue with.

No I don't do stats that's why I said it's rubbish.
Statistics based on these kinds of things are never accurate

Do I agree with the OP??

No not at all, I have no opinion on this matter
Other than disagreeing with bs stats ppl make up.

Teaching English isn't just teaching a language, if you do it well. You also help break down barriers between cultures and facilitate mutual understanding and the removal of prejudice, misperceptions and racism. I'm still in contact with students I taught over a decade ago.

I also used to volunteer at 청주맹학교 (School for the Blind) when I was still living there. A couple of weeks ago, I read a news story asking for foreign volunteers to meet children of North Korean defectors, not just for language teaching, but to help break down the fear and prejudice that those kids were brainwashed with. I volunteered to help, but I was too late. They had so many English native speakers that volunteered before me that they had to take them on a first-come, first-serve basis, just to be fair.

There are booger-eating morons over here that do little more than make money and get drunk. BUT, it would be just wrong to say that ALL foreigners who come over here to teach are like that. That sort of thinking is what leads to racism in the first place. ALL of these people are like THAT. Just sloppy, lazy thinking.

Can you show me where I chose a side? Can you porvide evidence of this? I'd really like to see this proof otherwise your pulling things out of your @$$ like Chan-Ho.

As for using words like faggot, they are words used in common usage in the western world, this includes internet forums. COnsidering the mature content of this forum the use of the word faggot is not such an anomoly.

As for his statement about killing people, it is not supposed to be taken literally but is merely an expression of his anger and disgust. For instance when someone says "I want to kill him!" or "your DEAD!" it does not mean they want to literally end someone's life. It is an exaggerated figure of speech used to convey a high level of hostility. Likewise the statement by kaizen would be interpreted in similar light to most well adjusted and sane individuals.

This is a Mature Fourm now? Is pornography allowed? Nudity of any kind? No

The word is full of venom and has no place here. This is not a hate site and should not become one. Saying you want some people killed should never be acceptable here. And unless you are Kaizen, you do not know his motive and intent in posting. Only he can attest to that.

I haven't been on this forum long enough to have much of an impression of the moderation practices, but I have noticed quite a few spam posts and even whole spam threads that haven't been deleted. I'm not one for censorship, but the title of this thread does smack of hate speech.

um no china is not in the least interested in invading korea, i assure u. extending its territories and control is the last thing china wants. its hands are full already with the ethnic tensions in the west, tibet, taiwan, overpopulation, energy sustainability, the list goes on...and north korea probably doesn't want to invade either.

so the question u should be asking urself is this: how can koreans stave off invasion from america and the west? and i don't mean invasions with missiles and tanks, but a invasion of ur culture, of ur identity and ur genes. how will u save urself from THAT? i think this is a relevant question when discussing the issue of esl teachers...

Kaizen + whoever shares similar views. Its ignorant racists such as yourself that give koreans a bad name abroad. STFU and make peace. You need to take a good look in the mirror and admit that Korea too has a reputation as being an inherently racist and nationalistic country.
There has been and there still is an emphasis on "mantaining the pure korean blood" (remember germany?), and as such its got a lot to do with the social conditioning the korean government and its media subjects its citizens to and coupled with the lack of social interaction with foreigners (9 times out of ten due to self-segregation) which you should also be aware of. Take steps to dump that trash from your mind.

The reason you feel intimidated by 'esl faggot expats' is probably a result of some male inferiority complex (and you are a guy, im sure, as no self-respecting woman would speak the way you do), u probably also have trouble meeting women (both korean and non-korean), which compounds your 'Napoleonic' issues and as a result (which is applicable to ALL humans, regardless of ethnicity/race), leads you to to subconsciously shift the blame to an externality (the faggot esl expat) as it is all too easy to point the finger at the foreigner.

People such as yourself who harbor such meaningless resentment towards other people (particularly other races/ethnicites) are the sole cause of most of the worst atrocities humankind has ever played a part in. Its a shame that there are still people like you walking this earth. Perhaps i am over-analyzing you, perhaps not. Either way, you need an education - rise up above your prejudices and ignorance and embrace life with everything it has to offer.
