It depends on the circumstances.

For vegetarian foods, I go to one place on Mott Street.
Otherwise, I've been around the Chinatowns at Canal Street or in Flushing every time i've been around New York, and went to lots of resturants so it's hard for me to pin down the names. However, I do prefer a certain place in Flushing for Taiwanese food.

I've found that Nobu is also a good venue for events of a more serious nature.

My take on food in New York

Chinese Cantonese - There's really no good place to eat in New York, not even close to the Chinese food quality you get in LA or SF, don't even mention Vancouver or Toronto. No NYC establishment can beat even Sam Woo in LA. But if I have to choose I'll go for New Hing Wong, freshest bbq meat over rice and not as greasy as other places I've tried. It beats Big Wong in most given days. For upscale Cantonese, I'm afraid there's none in NYC, there are a lot of mediocre ones and Westernized ones in Midtown. XO Cafe is ok for budget eating, but the quality is bad, and Funky Broome has the best fried squabs but that's all.

Chinese SheZhuanese - Spicy and Tasty in Flushing. Wu Liang Ye (50th St location) and Grand Sichuan International in Manhattan.

Beijing style Hot Pot - Nothing really good, but you may visit Xiao Fei Yang restaurant in Main St Flushing, close enough to what you get in Beijing, though cleanliness and freshness should be asked sometimes

Beijing Kao Ya or Peking Duck - None. I have yet to find a good Beijing Kaoya place in New York. The Peking Duck house at Mott St is glamorized but it's hardly good, any average places in Beijing beat it easily, not to mention the owner has become a snob because white folks highly praise this place.

Chinese Shanghainese - The restaurant in Midtown called Tang Pavillion is a good upscale ones, but ones have to know how to order and tell the owner to get the authentic ones from the Chinese menu. Pricesa are steep but it's in Midtown. For Xiao Long Bao I would go to Joe's Shanghai, but that's it. For average food I would go to Shanghai Cuisine or Shanghai Gourmet. The white folks seems to like New Green Bo which is mediocre at best to my liking.

Chinese Buffet - East in Flushing, but the quality is not that great. Food are mediocre, but don't quote me on this since I go to many authentic and great places in Asia and Canada, so my taste is highly influenced by authenticity, quality and exquisiteness

Chinese Taiwanese - A couple of good ones but none are upscale, I often go to David's Taiwanese in Elmhurst, Queens or the green decor place in Flushing, beside the parking lot, forgot the name

Bubble Tea Cafes - Two best ones ... Saint Alps in East Village and Sago in Flushing. Ten Ren used to be good. Now they're just ok and quality is dropping. Tea and Tea is just mediocre.

Vietnamese Chinese Noodle House - Bo Ky, they're cheap, fast, and taste good although you'll be thirty all day from the msg they use.

Vietnamese - The most popular is perhaps Pho Bang, but I like Pho Bac in Elmhurst, Queens better. The place also seems much cleaner than the others. For fried frog legs I would go to New Pastuer in Chinatown. Vietnam restaurant on Post St has the best variety but the quality is average at best, while Nha Thrang is standard, but nothing to brag about, my experience with Vietnamese food tells me that LA beats NYC by a mile.

Malaysian - First of all, let's establish that's most Malaysian restaurant in NYC are Chinese Malaysian food not really Malay Malaysian, with that in mind, most of the food are either mixed, peranakan food, or Hokkienese based. Nothing really good imho, the glorified Nyonya tastes aweful, some dishes are ok, but nothing compare the the real ones I had at KL or Penang. New Malaysia place is also ok, food are bland and more Chinese than Malay. Sentosa in Flushing is nice and clean but food are average at best with some dishes shine but nothing to brag about.

Singaporean - The only place I know is Singapore Cafe. But this place is nothing Singaporean at all. It's more Malaysia than Singapore, and I would rather save up some money to fly to Singapore and eat at Hawker Centers instead of wasting my dollars at this wannabe place.

More later....

Me and my family always go to this one restaurant in nyc chinatown to eat dumplings.

I totally agree with Ben. ALso the one next to mcdonalds in Chinatown.
Tomboy
kumkangsan embarassedlaugh.gif or the golden gate restaurant. I think that's the name...e_e?
snailpoo
DaeDong for barbeque
Evergreen (10th and Broadway) for comfort Chinese food.
Joe's Ginger (next to Joes Shanghai on Pell) for dumplings.
That metallic looking noodle shop next to the eyeglass place on Mott for noodle soups. (How's that for bad directions?)
Tomoe on Sullivan for sushi.
Mario Betalli's Po on Cornelia for Italian.
Bobby Flay's Mesa Grille for Americana.
Cones for ice cream.

Oh, and hi everyone, newbie here. Seeing as how important food is to me, I guess this isn't a bad way of joining a board icon_wink.gif

I like the Malaysian place in the tunnel, 69 is great for their salt&pepper squid and pork chop on rice and Wongs rice & noodles for general tso chicken...they have the best general tso chicken in my opinion.

My favorite burget spot is Houston out in midtown.

As for Viet, Pho Bac in Elmhurst used to be my favorite but lately they aren't that good anymore. The food portion is getting smaller & smaller for some reason. I've been eating at Pho Back ever since 1997 which was the time they just open.

My current favorite Viet restaurant is on Grand avenue, Elmhurst. I forgot exactly the name of the restaurant but it's next to a Chinese/Indian restaurant called Chopstick.

Japanese buffett, I always go to Minado in Long Island. The one in Carle Place, near Roosevelt Field mall.
conana
My favorite food places in NYC?

Buffet: Minado and East Buffet. Minado having such good food, its locations are Manhattan, near the korean town and also carle's Place, Long Islands. However, their prices are of course, overpriced. icon_smile.gif

Taiwanese: There's a restaurant in Flushing, I forgot what it is called, has a pretty good taiwanese food. It's in front of the Old Navy block..

Malaysian: The tiny malaysian restaurant in front of the basketball court in Flushing? Anyone notice it? I think it has one of the most authentic malaysian food other than restaurant in malaysia itself. I, being a malaysian, think it's one of the best restaurant =) There's also one in the corner of the china town area, again, I don't know the name, because my family took me there.

Korean: There's a korean buffet style restaurant in Northern Blv in Flushing. It's a steak style, you cook it yourself. 11$ is the normal lunch price, it's pretty good. There's also one near the Macy's... those Tofu thing, is amazing.

Vietnamese: The one in Flushing in front of the huge Library? That one is good. There's also 2 good vietnamese restaurants in China town. You all should know that by now.. lol I love Vietnamese food, one of my favorite of all time.

Bubble-tea: In flushing, near the big library, in front of the 99cents store, there's a bubble-tea shop. Why I think it's good? Students gets discount =) The drink is mediocre but the discount made it better than the rest.. lol

K place: If you don't know what's a "K place" , it means karaoke. There's a popular one in flushing near the Library, called "money something" ? It's very expensive. There's also one called "UFO" near Queens College, next to the D. Donut. Average price, however I heard there's fight every now and then, but then again... which Karaoke place has no fight? lol =)

Some relatives of mine went there and they said it was really good, small servings but really good. They also saw Jim Carrey and Nicole Kidman while they were there. I haven't been there yet, but I want to go one day.

Yeah, that's the main reason why I haven't gone yet. You have to make a reservation a few months in advance, that's what my relatives had to do. Talktohand.gif
