One of the best movies I saw in 2003 (and I saw a whooping lot of them) was "Teen Deewarein (Three Walls)". Surprisingly enough, no singing in this Indian movie. It was a big hit in India as well. Definitely worth checking out. I thought it was the best Indian movies of half a dozen I saw that year.

I watched a lot of Hindi films when I was a teenager because of the glamorous costumes, the songs gave us a good reason to take a break and talk about what we'd seen because I don't understand Hindi and the good thing about that is that I didn't understand some of the stupid lines that made my Indian friends roll eyes and curl toes.

We actually once tortured a whole bus full of other students from our high school with the music from Anjaam and Baazigar biggrin.gif

Bollywood actresses are drop dead gorgeous

I've always liked Mira Nair's movies, such as Monsoon Wedding, Mississippi Masala, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love and Salaam Bombay. A few more of my favorites would be Bend it Like Beckham, The Guru and Guru Dutt's amazing masterpiece Pyaasa. I've not had a chance to see her movies just yet but I've heard alot of good things about Deepa Mehta's Fire, Earth and Water. I'm always on the lookout for other Indian movies if anyone has suggestions for what to see. icon_smile.gif

I love to watch hindi movies. One of my favorite movie is Dil Se. Others I like include, Dil Hai Tumhara, Dil To Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein, K3G, KKHH, Pardes, and many more.

Tamil films (still indian) are better than Hindi films. Heh says my tamil wife and all her tamil relatives.

It is true that a bunch of Bollywood actress are trying to get into their flicks.

And there isn't a indian film that has never had a song in it. And quite a few have action fight scenes too.
dalawapo
im watching an indian movie right now called "earth" ... well im not really watching it srorta listening cuz im writing on this laptop. at first the language sorta seemed to make me think of kapampangan.
NewKampujea
I know this movie is old. It is really great and I highly recommended everone around the world should watch it. The movie title was Mother India.
dalawapo
i know of this other indian movie that plays on sundance or something, and its about 2 oppressed indian women who fall in love with each other and become lesbians or something.... i believe it's called "fire." do many indian movies have similar one word titles?

and what is the meaning behind the word "Bollywood"

I believe "Bollywood" typically refers to what some call the India version of Hollywood in the USA. Here's a link for a Bollywood website. http://www.planetbollywood.com/

I think I've seen some Indian Movies. I'm not totally sure if it was Indian or not. But it did seem so though. But overall, the movies were good.

indian people are known to be emotionals & thats one of the reason u see so many songs in a movie, because that best describes a feeling or thought.

Your wife is definitely right!

In the past few years there have been so many hit tamil movies remade in Hindi. As soon as a tamil movie makes it big, Bollywood is onto it to make a remake!

One example: Saathiyan was an exact scene for scene copy of Alaipayuthey (tamil version)!

Oh, throw pride to the wind, I'll say this: I am prone to cry whenever I see the sad scenes in Hindi movies. cry2.gif They really do tug at the heart strings, don't they? And I am such a sucker for them time and time again! The worst is whenever the the son-gone-bad returns to the village to seek forgiveness at the mom's deathbed. I can it coming a miiillee away, and still it gets me every time. Every time. bawling.gif

Gah, i just haaaaate indian movies .. i hate that dancing and i hate those english accent b movies. one movie my parents saw was an copy of an scream film. His friend saw him lying there and about to die and he came in screaming his name "BOB, Krisha!, BOB Krisha!, BOB, KRISHA!" like i counted 4-5 times .. enough with most of those B movies. . but i have to admit bollywood have made hits ... but can't they skipp the dance part .. it's like only extender because indian people's live is all about watching movies, so the movie end up being like 2-3 or sometimes 4 hours long and part of 50 minuits is like dancing and music from the actors unknown cd .. like comercial hidden in the movie ..

I happen to like the dance and song sequences in Indian films...there was one in Dil Se atop a moving train that was absolutely amazing to look at.
Musiq
Are songs appropriate?

It depends on the movie in my opinion. If it's a typical lighthearted masala movie then songs are fine. But i hate it when they make good movies with strong storylines and then put in songs to ruin the flow. That irks me!
this_kid
i luv them too

My mom is a very big fan of India movies!
Melanie
Some of the older films are really nice too. I like Caravan and Raja Hindustani. They are kind of cheesy but nice too. One of the all time popular hits is Sholay but it is a bit too bloody for me. I prefer the old black and white films though for some people they might be a bit heavy.
if you like films with substance you might check out Astitva with Tabu. She is a really great actress and comes across as both beautiful and intelligent.

TaTa love2.gif
wildkhmerbuddha
like whoa. the song and dance movement is awesome. love it.
cyanor
You guys are really weird... watching movies that you can't even understand. Wow, even I have not seen all those movies you are talking about.
Melanie
Hi Cyanor,

you would be surprised at how many people watch Indian movies that are not Indian! You know alot of movies distributed in other countries have subtitles common to the country it is disributed in. I knew three Russian girls once who had no ties to India at all and just liked all the singing and dancing. Bollywood is really spreading. Movies like Bend it Like Beckham and the Guru are in English and have really been a mainstream hit in the USA among white Americans and other ethnicities. I think it is great that other ethnicities like to watch Indian movies because it helps to bridge a gap between cultures. Cheers! beerchug.gif

Hi, are you guys are indians and desi's or you guys are asians? cuz i didn't know indian movies are watched elsewhere besides desi community?

care to enlighten an indian?
Melanie
Hi kkdkckrl,

I am pretty sure that most of the people here are Asian or of Asian descent. There are only a few Indians. I think mostly people come here to find out about Indian culture.

To answer your question, it is true that Indian movies are watched by different communities and nationalities around the globe. They are really catching on in the USA and Britian these days and in many Asian countries they are very popular as well. Hope that answered your question! icon_wink.gif

indians make movies more than anybody else, second only is the pi. bet most movies are not that good quality because they made too fast?
Rocky Cuong V
yes indian movie is awesome. biggrin.gif
kkdkckrl
Well in the past 2 to 3 years the quality has improved dramatically. I would expect that in 5 years, hindi movies will be as well produced as the hollywood movies. You have to remember that indian movies consist of various languages. A movie of one language isn't watched by the others.
flipcombatmedic
well i know that but since most of the indian movies are in hindi i just said indian. my friend from nepal watch indian movies all the time.
starangels81
well, there's are also indian movie that are dubbed in other language!!!! so i watch them and buy them, but sometime i download them online with english subtitles.... i just like the singing and dancing part and the girls....oh yeah, sometime the storyline are good too.
MING-LOYALIST
Personally I don't think the Indian movies are that graet but Indian MUSIC completly kicks @$$!!!!
I heard some translated into Chinese and sound really great even if they are in Indian and I can't understand I still love how it sounds.
GaleHarold
I watch Indian movies for all the wrong reasons....

Some of these Bollywood actors like Akshay Kumar are absolute hunks!!!!
And unlike these prudish American star, Bollywood men have no reservation appearing in speedos or be seen scantily claded!! love2.gif And they look good in them! icon_twisted.gif

Unfortuntely, I haven't seen too many Indian men here in NY that resemble these Bollywood guys....sigh.... sure.gif
Dreamz
HELLO. I am new.
Haha, this topic is funny.
I watch Hindi movies, right, and some of them are good. Others, of course, like everywhere else, just plain suck @$$. But the songs and dance sequences, while expertly choregraphed, totally just piss me of. Gah. It really takes too much out of the plot. Also, almost every single hindi movie ever produced in the history of history has been a type of love story. WHY? WHY? WHY?
Bah, there are my two cents. genius.gif
madxman21
Im not Indian Im Asian. Like I said my mom luvs indian movies cuz they are nothing likes shes ever seen. Likewise in my opinion. I luv watching indian movies even though i cant understand but the visuals are great. And some of them Indian actors are freakin FINE love2.gif love2.gif love2.gif love2.gif love2.gif love2.gif love2.gif love2.gif

Unlike PI movies, Indian movies are auctually worth watching. I couldnt stand the thought of watching some midget, big wide flat nosed filipinos running around shooting at each other or making love. pukeface.gif

Me too.

Bollywood movies are great because of:

*emotions (even in an action movie or a social-issues movie)
*"duty, honor, and sacrifice" -- "Asian values"-type dilemmas
*song and dance
*cute actors

Take any one of these elements away, and the rest is less compelling in my opinion.

Also, notice I didn't say "love" ... There are more emotions than just love, and I think it's really a myth that almost every Bollywood movie is a love story. It's the case that many of the most *popular* movies (particularly in recent times) are love stories, though.

Hehe GaleHarold, yay, another Akshay Kumar fan! biggthumpup.gif
