Interview from A+ Magazine, 2005 (before she was with Nico)
Mariana's Opus
To be or Not To BePrior to her ground-breaking appearance as the star of a soap ad, Mariana Renata has been doing modeling for quite some time. But her charm didn't end just there. Unlike Dian Sastro and Tamara, when Mariana first appeared on the ad, she was a such fresh breeze that on several internet forums, people were wildly speculating on who she was. Even after the fans decided to set up a mailing list, much about her still remained in the clouds. "Indeed, a lot of people still doesn't know much about me, I'm fine with it"
Born in Paris, December 31, 1983, the city became nothing but a flash of memory for her because for the next 6 years she lived in Zimbabwe. Not much she recollected of these events. All she remember was her parents story about the beauty of the place. Other than that? Just pictures, she said. That's why she wanted to return there someday. Leaving Africa, they moved to Paris for a year before returning to Jakarta.
When she graduated from high school here in Jakarta, she didn't know what she wants to do with her life. She DID, though, had previous experience in modeling. Then she decided to learn English. It was a unique choice because she went to Sorbonne University, Paris. This was like a challenge to her because she often had the assignments of translating 18th-19th Century English into French. "Sometimes I don't know the vocabulary, either in English nor French". Now she's in her 4th year, and expecting to graduate this year. Currently she's doing her assignments by correspondence through e-mail, and her thesis was about the conflict in Timor Leste.
While in Paris, she lived downtown and spent time with her girl-friends. In a light-hearted way, like most college students do, she described the event as a very girlie one. Every time she spoke of her studies, she considered it like a great battlefield, filled with immersing herself into the works of William Shakespeare, their complicated historical contexts, and the oh-so-unworldly vocabularies.
Okay, enough story about the mind-dizzying college life, especially when she used the terms I barely understand. So, What's next? "Something behind the scene in business, but I don't know what." A lot of things had been going through her mind, and fashion world was one of them. She had previously wanted to go to New York, but the plan was scrapped since the living cost in New York was a lot higher than in Paris. Most likely, she would continue her studies in Paris.
Maybe that's what made it all so fun, when the opportunity knocked on her door, to star on the soap ad, Mariana grabbed it right away. She briefly returned to Jakarta, and enjoyed the life as an Indonesian celebrity. Currently she's working on the movie 'Janji Joni', produced by Nia Dinata, directed by Joko Anwar. Cast along Nicholas Saputra, she played the metropolis girl, Angelique. A striking contrast to her personality in real life. Five days of shooting, so far it's been a pleasant experience for her, she didn't dare to comment on her acting just yet.
Other girls might have a lot to envy her for living such life, surprisingly, she's somehow still unsure of herself. Would she continue her acting career?. "If I were to carry on, maybe I should take acting courses. I don't know, it felt a little bit unnatural."
Despite all of her achievements, she's still afraid to spread her wings and fly. Mariana is unsure where her life might be leading her. Despite the 3 languages she mastered, we probably would never fully comprehend her because at times, she seemed to be easier to understand through her body language. When she wasn't answering our question, she stared down most of the time, happily stirring her Iced Fruit Cocktails. She slowly giggled, with the same speed of her facial gesture as she returned her gaze.
During the interview she didn't wear any makeup, and I have to admit that she looked prettier without one. I asked her what's her definition of beauty, and she answered that beauty comes from within: personality. “It’s inside. It’s not b!tchy. You have to be smart in everyday life. I think smart is not like education, but in everyday life. Nice. Respectful, personality.”
When exactly do you feel beautiful? "When I have my make-up done by a great make-up artist, and wearing the clothes I love. Wow Not bad! Ha..Ha..Ha.."
So beauty has nothing to do with personality? "When people looked at person for just five minutes? (She stopped for a moment and gave this big glare) I don't know what to say. In the long term, if the personality sucks, then the person's not attractive anymore."
So you wouldn't have a jerk as your boyfriend? "The most important trait of all. Respect, be kind, hard worker, smart, funny."
Such men exist? "They have to". She stopped stirring her ice and gazed down her leather trekking sandal. "I never really looked for them. When you meet one, you just meet one"
So, who's the lucky guy? She simply shook her head.
For our male readers, please take a deep breath. If you qualify for the qualities mentioned above, let me give you a hint.
She only had two previous relationships in her life. One when she's just 14, and the second was just two years ago. Guess how long it all went? Both were short-lived, just two weeks. The first one was puppy love, and the second was another puppy love.Hmmm... Is this woman afraid of commitment?
"I don't think much about it. I don't mind to be alone." [+]
