TOKYO — Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Tuesday he has told Japan's public security chief to review police training and preparedness after viewing a television news report about a man easily chasing off two police officers.

"I couldn't believe it when the police officers fled instead of trying to seize the suspect when he came at them," Koizumi said, referring to footage of an incident aired by Fuji Television Network on its morning news program.

According to the report and police, police officers who came to a scene where a car had run into a building in Tokyo's Daiba waterfront district fled when the driver approached them after wrecking the car's windows with a club.

The officers returned and arrested the driver when he tried to seize their police car, the police said.

Koizumi called the incident "embarrassing."

"Many people must have viewed the incident on TV," Koizumi said. "I told the National Public Safety Commission chief to take steps so police are trained and prepared."

The premier raised the issue during a cabinet meeting Tuesday morning, and National Public Safety Commission Chairman Yo$hitaka Murata apologized and vowed to look into the case, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda said. (Kyodo News)

Are Japanese police officers armed? I heard they were armed with sig p230 pistols. If they were not armed, i can understand their reaction.

Those guys are sad... Why did they even decide to become policemen...?

Ran away from the suspect? That is the most ridiculously funny thing I've read.

Wow, that's just really pathetic.

It also goes to show how safe Japan usually must be for their PD's to hire such clowns to "protect and serve"

this was just the latest in a string of incidents.

also recently, there was a case of some gangsters chasing down a man and beating the sh*t out of him, in front of a police box and a group of officers. the cops just stood there and watched. supposedly, they wre too chickensh*t to do their jobs.

But, notice... there are many psychos, in japan... so u never know... that's maybe why they fled,,,

One uses a knife to stab them while the other uses a knife to dismember and eat them.

This entire affair was an embarassment. I dont know why they would release this to the international community.... anyway japan should reintroduce it's police training program. Clearly the current one is not as effective as it could be.
