Hey lao folks. Lao people are getting a shopping mall in 2006! Can you believe it how exciting. I mean finally everyone else has one except for us. LOL I heard it was going to be called XANG SQUARE. Its only 2 stories though. But its going to be modern. Anyways they are also building a 4 story mall in central Viengchan city which will be done in 2009. Lao is growing pretty fast. Thanks for the investment.

GawtxJenny

Lao_Dreamer
Aw I wanna go see it....
Mackinaw_Peaches
no offense, but is a shopping mall really what the lao people need most right now? I think some priorities got mixed up along the way icon_confused.gif
PervertBurger
Its all about the dough. Government & Civilian wise.
Zelnom
I heard many old Lao people preach against Westernization of Lao culture. Isn't a shopping mall promoting materialism/captialism in Lao culture? Not to mention shopping malls include fast-food resturants, which is foreign to the diet of Lao people.

But those people are thinking in their old-fashion mindset though. Since I'm going to Laos after I graduate, I want to also see the "American" aspect as well. hehe.

Laos is to get over million tourist annually in the next couple years, its beggining to become a lil westernize.
Zelnom
Well, the concept of building to promote nation tourism is kind of a bit westernize ideal. The buildings and structure in the past and ancient days were built for great deities or for beliefs about the world. These days to built the tallest or greatest buildings is mostly in competition with other natons to compete in world records and/or to increase tourism to their country. This competition to generate the greatest profit is a product of capitalistic ideal - set in the Western world.

But of course on the other side tourism will help Laoseconomically and modernize its nation, as Laos is lacking in many resources.

D@mn 1ST shopping mall? How small is Laos really.
PtrckHri
"""D@mn 1ST shopping mall? How small is Laos really."""

Laos has about 5.6 millions people. The capital Vientiane has about 250,000 people, the smallest capital of all Asia, about 15 - 20 times smaller than Bangkok or Manilla.

For the shopping mall, some people have fought very hard not to allow it to be built because it would destroy most of the small stores and others and the "mellow" nature of the city.

Uhhhh actually you are pretty rude. I dont know why you get away with shiet like this. Its getting pretty annoying you talking like your people is any better than mine. Boy. please get a life. Im glad you worry about your people. I feel bad about your people too.But what can you do??? The truth is things are gonna happen. Of course they are going to feel sorry for the things that are happening but its not going to control their emotions and daily lives.

Laos will have a mall even if the small minority of 5,500 people have some issues. Laos will not let 5,500 people interfere with the development of the nation especially getting this far. Why arent the other 350,000 Hmong people are complaining about leaving laos??? I wonder why is that.
nombaingsachko
laos is progressing much quicker than i thought. i read on some article that they're also ahead of cambodia in modernization... good for laos beerchug.gif
baolao18
NO i think srok khmer is faster developing than laos. It has a higher population and a free market.

srok khmai has a four storey mall already which i think is awesome.

Simply put in terms, that's their home. Why would they leave their home, even if their living with a race, that tends to kill their allies in the forest. sure.gif

I dont.

My brother you can across the border to shop at Nongkai province in Thailand. You just walk across the bridge to Nongkai. You can shop everything which you want. Or if you have a lot of money, you can take a train from Nongkai to Krungthep. the city of angel, to shop at Maboonkrong Supermarket. You can walk more than 1 Kilo in the building from MarboonKrong Superstore to Siam Square (If you don't get loss, Because I get lost many time) and to World Trade Centre (in Thailand, not New York) The shoping place is on the side of the Skytrain rail. If you still have money. you can take a subway from Maboonkrong Superstore to Central Laspao superstore (The big one).

Acctually, I prefer to visit LuanpPhrabang than Krungthep (Even I live in Krungthep for long) I don't like a big city with crowded people. The most of people in Thailand prefer to visit the rural area in Laos instead of crowded city. If I can go to Camping in Laos easily I choose to go there.

I don't think a tourism in Laos can compete with Thailand if you would like to sell something modern. People can find very modern superstore in Krungthep instead Viangtian.(Why Viangtian, should be Viangchan). But if you sell something like a "natural tourism", I'm very doubt Thailand can compete with Laos in this kind.

I think Laos still have abundon natural scenic more than Thailand.
Hope you are understand your strategic advantage.
JediKnight
You don't have a big superstore, beautiful beach, sea, skytrain, subway. However you have mountain to climb,a cave to surve, a beautiful valley with thousand of flower and a hundred of butterfly. You have an interesting trail in a forrest to adventure.

That is very interesting. But I don't know how safe it is if I travel there. I like hiking into the jungle.

So who is building the mall? the government and the investor together?

This is a good sign, another Asian country investing in another, is beneficial for both.
Bodyslam
Yes, it is Bulldogg. We are very happy to help our brother who are the same blood. we would like to help Laos. If we can help. we will help.

100 million dollar is not big money for Thailand. If laos would like to borrow from Thailand. I think the government will be OK.

Please tell Princes Phra Thep. She gains a lot of respect from Thai people. (May be she will be a first Queen of Thailand, who know, Most of Thai like that) And she has a good relation with Laos.
Bulldogg
Heil Princess Phra Thep

Heil Laos & Thailand.

Wow first shopping mall ever? I assumed they already had malls -_- I should tell mother so we can go on vacation or something. She says I wouldnt be able to handle it though dntknw.gif
Sirikittong
Its good to see Thai builders and investors helping out Laos. I think Thailand should BE MORE generous to Laos in the future. Build more banks, houses, apartment buildings, schoolts, etc.

what u read was wrong. We already have a mall and cambodia is a hot spot for tourism. We have angkor wat, the beaches, islands, hotel resorts with golfcourses. Anywho its good to see laos coming up with us.
SofaKingAwesome
goddamn...i just realized this thread is hella old... march 2005. lol
Goombaking209
LOL laotains should be focusing on other aspects to improve than adopt the ideals of western affluent materialism.
Sirikittong
But this aspect of 'western materialism' will generate capital for the LaoPDR. With the completion of this mall--it will be a tourist attraction; tourists and/or citizens will buy material and generate capital for the country.

I see this as a positive factor for the people of Laos.
San86
Excuse me JB, but the ones doing the killing are the Lao Communist government. Since when did the Hmongs side with the Communist? They wouldn't want to anyways, since China and Vietnam are also Communist and we all know how you Hmong folks feel about Chinese people......You sided with the U.S.

The U.S. lost and your people who were left behind in the country of Laos suffered, simply because the oppossing side lost the war.

I'm not saying Communism (defined in a twisted interpretation by nations such as China and the former Soviet Union) is great, but the fact is you lost and they Communists makes anyone pay who didn't side with them.

So please, stop universally hating LAO PEOPLE!!!!! We have done so much for Hmong people. All you guys do in return is b$tch about us being evil and all that other stuff. If it wasn't for the kindness of khon Lao people, most of your people would be stuck in China and become their little b$tches! Or worse absorbed into Chinese Culture completely, therefore having NO HMONG identity!

Let's just be thankful for what we all have and instead of playing the blaime game and do something about it!

Peace be with you! beerchug.gif
