Disguised soldiers nab rebels
ZAMBOANGA CITY (AFP) — Soldiers disguised as farmers captured four communist guerrillas who were extorting money from peasants in a municipality in Compostela Valley, military officials said Friday.
Maj. Alexis Bravo told reporters during a press conference that local residents tipped off the authorities as the New People’s Army (NPA) unit was collecting illegal "taxes" near the town of Laak in the Compostela Valley region on Wednesday, local military official Major Alexis Bravo said.
Four handguns were seized from the suspects, Bravo said.
The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), which has been waging a Maoist campaign to seize power for over 30 years.
The United States and European countries have blacklisted the CPP and the NPA as foreign terrorist organizations, allowing their assets abroad to be frozen.
