Urgh...whaling. thumbsdown.gif

I've read a few articles in national geographic about what Japanese whaling is doing to the numbers. icon_sad.gif

yeah i heard somewhere that they kill around 600 mink whales yearly..

I would like to try out some whale meat some time, they say it's yummy.
But I hope the whales aren't killed aggresively. Well, I don't care actually. I mean, african people are suffering and we could donate 50 dollars to them, but we're no going to that, cause it doesn't benefit us. We're selfish.

well..
many whales species are naer the brink of extinction..
i dont think japanese should kill them for food..!

whaliing isalright as long as it's in moderation. it's been a part of certain cultures for a long time. i don't know about jpan's history in whaling though. i hope their not whaling TOO much.

This whaling thing is becoming outrageous. The whale population would be find if it wasn't europeans over hunting them. Now they want to complain. These people need to be ignored. As long as japanese whale fishers are getting them from japanese waters it is an internal issue.

But that's not what's really being debated from the International Commission on Whaling is it?

I thought Japan wanted to also extend its whale hunt to foreign waters as well - and the reason why Australia was so against it was because Japan had requested permission to hunt within Australian waters.

Personally, I don't think there's an 'issue' here at all. It would be good of Japan to restrict its quota and refrain from hunting endangered species. But other countries should stop pretending like they actually care about the well-being of whales: it's the potential loss of the tourism dollars from whale-watching that's got their blood boiling, not their "concern".

Interestingly, China had always voted in support of Japan at those meetings and, correct me here if I'm wrong, this is the first year they've voted against them...

The issue here is that japanese fishers are killing whales and some of which are rare. This is actually an old issue. It's only now getting alot of media attention.

I believe japan's request was denied some time ago. From what I understand now their just getting on the "save the whales" bandwagon.

It is an issue. A passive issue but still an issue it seems. I also agree with your view about this being mainly over tourism concerns.

I actually thought the china voted in favor of japan in this issue. Then again I only have a passive interest in this issue at all. Though I am not surprised by their actions of course.
