First of all, the Ming dynasty had been falling anyways. About half the generals involved with establishing the Qing dynasty were Hans who had wanted to revolt against the Ming.

Secondly, "conquered" implies that they viewed themselves as foreigners. At the beginning, they viewed themselves as a different people, but they also came to admire Han's culture, so they eventually assimlated into it and considered themselves Chinese. Within a few generations, most of the emperors spoke Chinese as their first language, and also spoke Manchu as wel.

Edit: I believe the style of hair with the front shaved is the traditional Manchu style, contrary to the tales in the west that it was a "status symbol". Even the Manchu emperors were known to wear it.
