Full Version: Do Japanese believe in voodooism?

I know that very few Japanese are practising Christians. Some believe in Shinto. But nowdays, I see some kind of cult belief similar to voodooism spreading throughout its society.

Voodooism is a belief that originates from the Caribbean islands and was practised by black slaves in Louisiana. There are such things as the New Orleans voodoo, voodoo doll and the New Orleans voodoo tarrot card. The bamboo resonates that call from the wild. One of the originial voodoo cult practices was that of placing nails in voodoo dolls as a curse.

HAHAHAHAHAHA
Younghee is officially back. I missed these ridiculous topics for comic relief.

Voodoo did not originate in the Caribbean, it came from West Africa. Benin's official religion is Voudou and is kind of known as the cradle of Voodoo.

I think a lot of what Voodoo is was hyped up in the media, but a lot is still not really widely known on a public scale.

As for Japanese and voodoo, I think anyone could answer that question. sure.gif
younghee
From what I've read the cult it is still practised in Haiti and was adapted by the Creoles in Louisana which was once a French speaking state. There is some kind of French influence associated with Voodooism, I think, as I've seen the French think in the same thought patterns. A French connection?
FrenchVanillaNYC
Actually it has more to do with the blend between Catholicism and the original form of "Voudou" in Africa that winds up as what we know as Voodoo. It's not the French necessarily. Western Voodoo is not the same as the original voudou in Africa because of the Catholic influence on their practices. They merged it, from what I hear. icon_neutral.gif

So you'll have some people who claim they believe in Catholicism but still worship the lwa and whatnot.

well that depends.....are you refering to pre or post industrial leather goods? because as everyone knows......leather shoes prior to 1800 were the primary conduit for voodoo misanthropic manifestations........

I don't think the Japanese, the Haitians, the West Africans, the Koreans and the Chinese are the only ones partaking in this voodoo cult phenomenon. I was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York recently, and the African art section I could see had a lot of voodoo art sculptures and masks-- very popular with the artsy crowd.

I think its going to be all or nothing for voodoo.

Voodoo is a misrepresentation of ORISHA, SHANGO, MBANDA, LUCUMI AND OTHER MENTAL-SPIRITUAL RELIGIONS.

Japanese practict Shintoism, which looks like Orisha and Vadu.

Some Shavaists in India practice a form of Vadu (watch the movie "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"

Much of the Vadu practiced in Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, parts of Mexico (the Black part in VeraCruz), the US, Jamaica and West Africa is based on the concept that THE HUMAN IS OF THE GOD, THEREFORE THE HUMAN IS BEWTOWED WITH 'GODLIKE POWERS'

See http://community.webtv.net/paulnubiaempire

Vadu is also a militaristic religion that uses forms of vadu in warfare.

Vadu is also a form of capital punishment (ZOMBIFICATION) that is applied to the worse types of criminals by the people of a community (research, National Geographic, THE HISTORY CHANNEL)

There is vadu - the term 'vadu' mean 'spirit' and deals with evoking the spiritual side of humans and other beings.

THERE IS ORISHA - The elemental forces and harnessing them when needed.
Comes out of Nigeria

There is Ogunism - Ogun being the element of iron and warfare
Comes out of the Fon and Benin

There is Shangoism - Shango is the elemental force of huricanes, lightening, thunder.
Shango is originally out of Nigeria and from the Yoruba

There is Lucumi - comes out of Brazil and Cuba, originally out of Central Africa and from the Ba-Kongo and Me-Kongo people

Mbanda comes out of Brazil originally of Central Africa

Pacomania comes out of Jamaica

Palo (which is a militant secret society where the 'pinky' finger is chopped off by members)

Syncretism with overwhelming African forms of worship is found in PENTICOSTAL AND SOME OTHER 'CHRISTIAN' RELIGIONS
The only Christian aspect is the Bible and the fact that Christ is recognized. However all other aspects of worship comes from African Spiritualism.

Found all over the Americas, particularly in Black nations and communities.

MORE ON VADU, ORISHA, SHANGO, GO TO THE LAST SECTION, SCROLL BELOW:
http://community.webtv.net/paulnubiaempire

Vadu, Shango, Orisha, Pacomania, lucumi, Mbanda are called African Spiritualism.

There are about 500 million African practitioners in Africa and the Americas (OUT OF 1 BILLION AND 300 MILLION AFRICAN PEOPLE-IN AFRICA AND THE AMERICAS- OF WHICH MANY ARE MUSLIMS OR CATHOLIC CHRISTIANS), INCLUDING MANY CHRISTIANS AND INCLUDING MANY 'WHITE' HISPANICS.

The religions closest to Voodoo or African Spiritualism found in Asia is Shivaism and animism.

One can be in any religion and practice an African religion because African religions deal with RECOGNIZING THE 'GOD' IN HUMANS AND NOT IN WORSHIPPING A 'GOD' IN HUMAN FORM.

HENCE, MANY PEOPLE LOOKING FOR CONFIDENCE, INCREASED PERSONAL POWER, WEALTH, ENLIGHTENMENT FOLLOW CERTAIN AFRICAN RELIGIONS.

Elaborate please. I would like to hear a more detailed account of which African forms of worship you're talking about in the Pentecostal sect. Are you talking about people getting the "holy ghost"?
