Anyone living there? I'm due to start my freshman year at University of Rochester as an international student and would like to know how it's like up there; weather, entertainment, convenience etc.

I've been to Rochester a few times.

Weather isn't the best - lots of snow.

Monroe Avenue is the main strip, really.

Also, surrounding areas tend to be nice. You definitely need a car as public transpo is very limited.

There's a free magazine/newspaper that lists all the concerts and art events around town. Rochester is trying to foster an artistic element.

Food-wise it's not bad considering it is in Western NY. There is a sizeable East Indian population up there so you do have good Indian food. Chinese is hit or miss. American cuisine is predominant.

rofl, i'm in morrisville, ny..........u guys have no idea how boring it is here. It's like a small town 45 min away from syracuse. When you say there's nothing to do in syracuse, then u dont understand whats it like in morrisville.
umon
syracuse... not too bad, in fact :-)

upstate is soooo cold especially during the winter.

but the goodthing is...when it snows, since there isn't a log of slush, you can play in the snow, throw snowballs, and make snowmen.

Awwh winter...I want to go...snowboarding...skiing... and snow sledding...drink hot chocolate...

UofR is like 20 minutes away from me outside of Rochester and Henrietta. I'm guessing since you're an international student you won't have your own car...but since you're going to a big college I'm sure you'll make friends with people that have them.

There's a lot to do in the city, tons of restuarants, lots of shopping not too far from you in Henrietta, Greece, even Pitsford. If you want to travel a bit it's about an hour to Buffalo and they have a big mall there and more restuarants.

Will you be living on campus? Weather shouldn't be too bad...Rochester is known for their bitter winters...but the past 2 we've had haven't been bad at all. Cold to say the least, but snow wise you're not going to be buried. Convenience wise you should have everything you need right on campus for you, if not you can go down the road in Henrietta, there is a Wegmans (food store), malls and other department stores, movie theatres, restuarants...if you have any questions though feel free to ask me.
