Majapahitans
On August 15, 2005 The Free Aceh Movement and the Government of Republic of Indonesia sign a peace treaty at Helsinki, Finland.
These treaty will end war and bloodshed between Indonesian troops and Aceh rebels that torn Aceh province for almost 30 years. beerchug.gif

At last Free Aceh Movement (GAM) will drop their demand of Aceh independence, and acknowledge Aceh as a part of Unitary State of Indonesia (Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia).
As Indonesian I really proud that we can reconcilliate and solve problem in peace manner with dignity for all.

I'm happy for our brother in Aceh, they finally can enjoy peace and face future with new hope. They can rebuild their lands that devastated by last December Tsunami, and decades of local war.

But there's still a lot work to be done.
So guys..., what do you think about this issue. icon_smile.gif

See text of Helsinki peace deal

It's good that there is a peaceful resolution to the chronic conflict in Aceh. Let's hope GAM really surrendered ALL their weapons, stop smuggling guns from Thailand, and later if they become political party, not use guns to intimidate voters and the KPUD to elect them. And govt must also give protection, both physically and economically to Acehnese ppl who hv been pro-Indonesian during the darkest period of the conflict, such as pro-Indonesian Acehnese groups and Javanese transmigrants. These formerly sworn enemies of GAM must be protected in the future from any potential GAM revenge attacks.

sounds nice I just hope they would really follow the peace treaty

Terima kasih...., icon_smile.gif

But maybe we should congrate Indonesian Government and GAM for finally coming to their senses to stop the war and violence. embarassedlaugh.gif

Btw, in Jakarta (especially within the parlement building) there is some doubts concerning GAM sincerity to surender their weapons. And also suspicion that GAM will try to win regional election, and then take over Aceh and then rebel again to separate Aceh from Indonesia. But then again, if GAM do that, they will violate the peace agreement.

I read the helsinki peace deal from purnomor, the treaty sound like federation state right for Aceh province.

Indonesia actually will be much better becoming federal state than just province right now in term of political stability. So each province will not whining and blaming their lack because of central goverment.

Yeah..., I agree with you. This Helsinki treaty does sonds like it.
However I think in near feature Indonesia will be som kinda federal state in practice, but still a unitary state at the legal aspect. (maybe Indonesian govt. still don't want to admitted openly). embarassedlaugh.gif

Just look at "otonomi daerah" especialy during this SBY govt, Plus direct regional govt. election (pilkada). All of this gave each province enough freedom to govern themself.

Oh btw this kinda federalism or autonomy type government actually is not a new thing for this archipelago. For example during Sri Vijaya and Majapahit empire actually did some kind of federalism. For example Majapahit empire doesn't involved on their vassal states affair too much. As long as they pay the tribute and swore their loyalty to the Majapahit throne.

indonesia is already a federal state but in name since the regional autonomy (otonomi daerah) in 2001

Indonesian are too dumb to change something, I am still remember few years ago they said UUD45 is sacred thing can not be changed or modified, they said it's final.

Final of what? I never understand with them.

Now look at now they swallow their own spit.

From the beginning I already have idea Indonesian problem of region jealousy toward central goverment (seperatism) could only be cured by federalism.

The other ethnic groups in Aceh, the Gayo and Alas folks, are determined to separate from Aceh and make their own province. I don't see any reason for rejection, similar to separation of Gorontalo from North Sulawesi or West Sulawesi from South Sulawesi. Historically, even during the heyday of Aceh Kingdom during Iskandar Muda's reign in which Aceh politically dominate most of Malay Peninsula, the mountains of Central and Southeastern Aceh was outside Acehnese control.

Bila Pemekaran Ditolak, Lima Kabupaten Ancam Berontak
Reporter: AK-34 - Jakarta, 2005-08-24 15:23:38

Jakarta, acehkita.

[dzie

I have a friends whom are Gayo ethnic. He claims that Gayo are different than Acehnese. They have culture more similar to Batak of North Sumatra rather than to coastal Acehnese. And even during GAM-RI conflic most of them aren't so fond of Aceh's independence idea or rebel things.

Maybe Indonesian government should granted their wishes. icon_smile.gif

AMM international monitors from European Union and ASEAN countries then destroy the weapons by cutting them into three pieces. According to Helsinki peace agreement, GAM would surrender all their 840 firearms and all their ammunition and explosives in four stages. The first stage started today, 15 September 2005, while the last stage ends on 31 December 2005.

In exchange, Indonesia withdraws most government soldiers and police from Aceh, leaving only approximately 25,000 organic military and police units in the province. According to Helsinki peace deal, Indonesia will give Aceh wide autonomy while GAM agreed to give up idea of independence, surrender all its weapons, and disband all its fighters.

My dad told me that the people of Batak Karo was from Gayo ethnic. Karonese language is more similar with Gayo’s.

icon_confused.gif I'm not sure of that because Gayo people tend to withdraw and silent. My dad also told me that they prefer to be just Gayonese, not Acehnese. It means to be another new ethnic separated from Acehnese, not sub-ethnic of Aceh nor being independent. They don’t have any effort to do that. In fact, lots of Gayoneses became the victims of GAM too.
Well that's what my dad told me.

Why only most? why not all of the soldiers and police should be withdraw?
And who will protect those former Acehnese GAM member from 25,000 organic military?

Isn't that according to Helsinki peace deal Aceh security should be handled by Acehnese itself? and Aceh under Indonesia protectorate in term of security threathing from outside.

no, according to helsinki peace deal, matters of national security is on the hands of indonesian government. the treaty exactly specifies that 25,000 soldiers and police will stay in aceh.

and the ex-rebels have no reason to complain. not only they got amnesty, the govt will give them parcels of land to cultivate and monthly subsidies as well..

Do not assume she is Acehnese. Just because she is using haircover because female encouraged to cover all their hair no matter where are you from.

There are a lot of immigrant pocket in Aceh from others island.

Aceh rebels disbands military wing

The separatist movement in Indonesia's Aceh province says it has officially disbanded its military wing after more than twenty years of fighting.

The announcement was made after a meeting between rebel leaders and the Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The move is in line with the Helsinki peace agreement signed in August, which promised more autonomy for Aceh.

President Yudhoyono says any new troop deployments would be for reconstruction efforts in Aceh, after last year's tsunami.

Less than one thousand not fifteen-thousand, that is already stated in the press. And of course, this deployment and employment of the engineering unit, should not stop the ongoing peace process.

I know that there were many other processes at work, but I romantically tend think of it as the tsunami that brought this conflict to world attention and washed away the tears of war. A bitter price to pay with so much destruction, yet I hope some good emerges from the ruins.
All cheers for love and peace !
