It depends on which neighbour you're talking about. Everyone have their own strength and weaknesses. We either tend to be patriotic about our own force and think ours is the best (need reality check a bit here) or think that ours is the worst of the lot (learn more about our MAF, pls). Among our immediate neighbours, most would agree that we are in better shape than Philippines and Brunei while Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand would be a formidable foe. We have great plan but execution and funding are our main obstacle.

Najib: RMAF Must Fully Exploit Sukhoi Su-30MKM Capability

August 10, 2007 16:22 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) needs to utilise the state-of-the-art technology of the new multi-role combat aircraft, Sukhoi Su-30MKM, in enhancing its combat effectiveness and overcoming limited resources.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the addition of this modern aircraft, a highly agile multi-role air fighter which could be effective as a strike and offensive capable aircraft, "augments the frontline combat capability of RMAF towards a balanced force development to enhance the national defence capability".

Najib, who is also Defence Minister, was speaking at the handing over of the Sukhoi Su-30MKM flight log book to him by Victor Komardin, the deputy director of Russia's Rosoboronexport, the manufacturer of Sukhoi, at the RMAF base in Subang, near here, Friday.

He said the handing over of the flight book signified another milestone in RMAF's modernisation programme to maintain combat capability.

"This is in line with the government's efforts to strike a reasonable balance between maintaining and sustaining the country's present capability and procuring new war fighting systems.

"What the RMAF lacks in size must be made up for with cutting-edge technological sophistication. Malaysia's new acquisitions are specifically a commitment to sustain and improve a well-balanced conventional force," he added.

Najib said the handing over of the Su-30MKM also marked continued good bilateral relations between Malaysia and Russia.

He said the cooperation that began with the MiG-29N deliveries in the 1990's which had now been supplemented by the Sukhoi aircraft with their greater range and powerful armament, was evidence of Russia's readiness to develop further cooperation with Malaysia, especially in the field of high technology.

In May 2003, Malaysia ordered 18 Sukhois at RM3.42 billion. Six of the aircraft had been received since June this year and are based at the RMAF base in Gong Kedak at the Kelantan-Terengganu border.

Meanwhile, RMAF chief Jen Tan Sri Azizan Ariffin said the Sukhoi squadron would be fully operational by the end of next year, and currently four pilots were undergoing training in Russia and more would be sent there after the first batch completed their course.

Soldiers take part in Merdeka March to promote patriotism

Tuesday August 14, 2007

Left, right, left: The eastern contingent marching from Pengkalan Kubur on Monday.

JOHOR BARU: Some 1,200 soldiers have started their march from the northern, southern and eastern points in the peninsula to promote the spirit of Merdeka. Their Merdeka March along trunk roads will end at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 26. The soldiers will carry out community work as they pass through towns. Each contingent consists of 400 troops and 100 of them will march at any one time on a rotational basis. The three contingents are carrying 49 Malaysian flags, 16 Army Corps flags, army and armed forces flags.

Army chief Jeneral Tan Sri Muhammad Ismail Jamaluddin flagged off the southern contingent at Dataran Bandaraya here. The northern contingent started the march in Padang Besar, Perlis, and the eastern contingent set off from Pengkalan Kubur, Kelantan. Jen Muhammad said the Merdeka March would display the physical and mental strength of the soldiers and raise the Government’s and people’s confidence in their credibility. In Sarawak, 150 troops will march to Miri from Kapit on Aug 17, while another 150 in Sabah had set off from Kalabakan to Kota Kinabalu on Aug 10. Those in Sabah and Sarawak are scheduled to arrive at their destinations on Aug 30.

Women want to be volunteer cops

2007/08/30

KUCHING: When Roshima Abdullah saw the advertisement for police volunteers at the university where she worked, she told friends that it was the answer to how she could spend her spare time.

"I have lots of free time during weekends and this volunteer work is like killing two birds with one stone," the 38-year-old Unimas administrative assistant said yesterday after receiving her letter of offer from Commissioner of Police Datuk Talib Jamal.

She said she wanted to contribute to society, and helping to keep the peace was one way of doing that.

The mother of one, who believes that society should assist the police in combating crime, persuaded 10 of her friends to apply.

"Sadly, seven failed at the first interview and one at the second interview. In the end, I was left alone as the other successful colleague dropped out due to other commitments."
It was fascination with the police uniform that made Dayangku Mulia Awangku Ahmad sign up.

"My father was a policeman, and this sparked my ambition to join the force," she said. That she is already a security guard speaks volumes of her obsession with uniforms.

Dayangku Mulia went for the first interview with 20 friends but only she got through.

Roshima, Dayangku Mulia and 43 other volunteers will start their six-month training course on Nov 1.

It will include marching drills, lessons on law and police procedures and handling of firearms.

Talib said the volunteers would have duties like accepting reports to police, attachments with the mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) unit, traffic and crowd control, and manning road blocks in anti-crime operations.

Talib yesterday opened the city’s new MPV base in Jalan Tun Zaidi Adruce.

Sukhoi to be star at Lima airshow

2007/09/05

LANGKAWI: The pride of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) will take centre stage at this year’s Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace exhibition (Lima).

Four of the six Sukhoi Su30MKM jet-fighters, which were delivered earlier this year, will take part in the air show and they will be on display in the static show. The RMAF has ordered 18 of the Russian jets in a deal worth RM3.4 billion.

"The Sukhois are our pride and joy. We will make sure that a Malaysian pilot flies the aircraft during Lima 2007," said RMAF chief of operations Brig Gen Datuk Rodzali Daud.

"This year, the RMAF will showcase all the fighter aircraft we have flown since 1955 up to our latest acquisitions — the Sukhois," he said at a news conference after a meeting with the Lima aerospace working committee.

Lima 2007, to be held at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre from Dec 4 to 8, is set to be the biggest yet with over 800 exhibitors from 40 countries.
Members of the public can visit the exhibition on Dec 7 and 8.

Sorry I cant go to much into detail......for security reasons.....an example........

One Friday afternoon in the jungle. an advance to contact exercise was being conducted....
right in the middle of the exercise, prayer time came!!!!!!!!!! and everything stopped. All muslims
went off to pray....and left the other non muslims to fight .....you cant win wars stopping and going to pray to Allah....

All this was seen by international military observers......they were not amused...

I rest my case....

if u do not believe in god its up to u. but we are as a muslim have our own style, u can judge but u cant decide. We as a muslim believe that it is our responsibility to pray to our god even in a war, but there is different way to pray in war. We fought for our religion n our nation, there is no different in races as long as we are muslim. There is something that non-muslim cant see in us. We have something that u wont have, that thing that u cant see, but it lay deep in our heart..its faith.

Alhamdulillah, malaysia sekarang dah menuju ke arah pemodenan angkatan tentera. Syabas dengan kemasukan pesawat pejuang berprestasi tinggi SU-30MKM, saya bangga dengan spec yg MAF pilih, harap2 suatu hari nanti kita dapat produce figther sendiri, pastu wat missile sendiri, jd xdela bergantung pada org lain. Skali-skala buat la latihan yg mantap, mcm latihan perang konvesional ke...sekarang kita perlu berganjak dari peranan counter-insurgensi kepada pertahanan hadapan.

Malaysia plans software upgrade for its F/A-18s

Dzirhan Mahadzir JDW Correspondent Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia is upgrade the software systems on its six F/A-18C and two F/A-18D Hornets to allow them to fully utilise the latest weapon systems for the aircraft.

The upgrade is expected to cost up to USD17 million and is to be completed by 2011. Work will be carried out by a US Navy-appointed contractor as the upgrade programme will be handled by the US Department of Defense under the Foreign Military Sales programme.

The upgrades are necessary since Malaysia's F/A-18s have not undergone any software upgrade since their delivery in 1997 and thus are not fully able to utilise weapon systems introduced for the Hornets since then, such as the Advanced Medium Range Air to Air Missile (AMRAAM) and the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM).

Malaysia currently has less than two dozen AMRAAMs in storage on US territory; it will bring them into the country this year. Malaysia has also sent a request for an undisclosed number of JDAMs that is currently pending with the US.

More likely missiles first rather than fighter jet. Even Pakistan who has superior defense technology than us has to collaborate with PRC in developing fighter jet. If you do not know yet, nowadays we have plenty of conventional warfare exercises, both CPX and FTX. I can't seem to recall when was the last time we had a major CIW exercise, small one yes lah. Eks Pahlawan, First Strike, Pasak Bumi, Penyu Trident, Puma, Southern Tiger, Malindo Dasarsa etc are all major CW exercises.

Yes, more likely it'll be missile system. That is far more economically viable for us.

To my knowledge, we already acquired FN-6 missiles from PRC & in the process on requiring KS-1A missile system from PRC. This also include reverse engineering & technology transfer of the said missiles.

Good move on Mindef part.

India Ready To Sell Supersonic Brahmos Missile To Malaysia

NEW DELHI, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- India is keen to sell to Malaysia the supersonic Brahmos missile that is being produced under a joint venture with Russia.

Brahmos Aerospace Private Ltd's chief executive officer Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai said India would only sell the sophisticated missiles to countries that are friendly and those considered as strategic partners in India's security equation.

"We have made a list of countries which are interested in our product and those with the defence budget to spend. In that list, definitely Malaysia is one of them because we have seen the interest shown by the country at our exhibitions in Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur," he said.

"So we are in a good understanding but this is not sufficient. What is needed is that the government of Malaysia should write officially to the government of India to form a strategic partnership," he told Bernama in an interview at Brahmos' headquarters here.

Indian and Russian scientists have designed and developed the cruise missile which is said to be three times faster and more accurate in hitting enemy targets than the American-made subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.

The missile, with the acronym Brahmos derived from India's Brahamputra River and Moscow River, comes from a joint venture between India's reputable Defence Research and Development Organisation and Mashinostroyenia of Russia.

The project had started in 1998 and the first missile was test-fired in 2001.

Following that, at least six other tests were carried out without any flaw discovered.

The versatile missile can be launched from multiple platforms -- land, sea, sub-sea and air. It can also be installed on the Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jet.

Malaysia had purchased 18 Russian-made Sukhoi-30MKI aircraft in 2003.

The Brahmos missile, primarily an anti-ship missile, is capable of carrying warheads of up to 660 pounds and easily reach enemy target at a distance of 290 kilometres.

"We sell weapons to create strategic relationships, and both countries become very dependent when an important weapon is sold. I sincerely hope that Brahmos is going to build very strong relationships between India and many other countries," Pillai said.

Industry sources said that besides Malaysia, countries like Chile, Kuwait, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates have expressed interest in the Indian-Russian-made missile.

At least 1,000 of these high supersonic missiles are expected to be sold to friendly countries and the first export could be next year.

First Malaysian sub launched

By CHOI TUCK WO

CHERBOURG (France): Malaysia’s first Scorpene submarine was launched Tuesday signifying yet another leap in the nation’s pursuit of new technology.

KD Tunku Abdul Rahman, named after the country’s first Prime Minister, was unveiled in a historic ceremony at the DCNS dockyard here, about 400km from Paris.

In keeping with maritime tradition, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor broke a bottle of water against the submarine’s sail to signify the official launching and naming of the vessel.

Traditional launch: Rosmah breaking a bottle of water against the submarine’s sail to signify the official launching and naming of the vessel KD Tunku Abdul Rahman at the DCNS dockyard.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s wife then unveiled a plaque with the submarine’s name and called upon “Allah to bless her and all who serve and sail with her”.

Accompanying her were Royal Malaysian Navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Ramlan Mohamed Ali, DCNS chairman Jean-Marie Poimbeouf and Submarine Force Project Team head Laksamana Pertama Rosland Omar.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, French Defence Minister Herve Morin, Defence Forces chief Jen Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Zainal and senior officials from both countries witnessed the ceremony.

Later, the VIPs toured the submarine which is equipped with torpedoes, sub-surface to surface missiles and sea mines.

The vessel was one of two bought by Malaysia in 2002, with both being jointly constructed by DCNS of France and Navantia of Spain.

Najib inspects the controls of the submarine during a tour of the vessel.

In his speech, Najib said the submarine was named after the Tunku in recognition of his contribution in leading the country to independence.

“His courage, wisdom and foresight had steered our nation to what it is today,” he added.

He said the submarine acquisition was part of the Malaysian Armed Forces’ modernisation programme which could contribute significantly towards creating a more balanced capability.

As a maritime nation and given its geographical setting, it is inevitable that Malaysia’s national interests and security concerns are closely related and associated with the seas, he said.

He said commercially, more than 90% of the country’s domestic and international trades were dependent on sea transportation.

On the seabed lies underwater pipelines that transport Malaysia’s oil and gas ashore as well as cables that link major international communication networks.

“It is thus crucial for Malaysia to have a small but credible and effective naval force to not only safeguard its sovereignty and maritime interests but also contribute to the region’s maritime security and safety,” he added.

Najib said the project signified a major leap into high technology defence acquisition, providing the impetus for the local industry to acquire cutting-edge technological knowledge and expertise.

KD Tunku Abdul Rahman is set to sail home, manned by the country’s first submarine crew in January 2009 while the second vessel, to be named KD Tun Razak, is expected to be delivered by October 2009.
