It's not written わ just because it's pronounced wa. In this case, you would write は and pronounce it wa.

My grip of the Japanese alphabets... My grandparents once told me a story about how useful Kanji was in China because they could just write back and forth with people they couldn't talk to in any of thier known languages.

dude, i tihnk he means that if you don't know the kanji, they are read as those hiragana.

like on japanese instruction booklets for videogames, all the kanji have hiragana in a tiny font on top of each character since a lot of the people playing the videogames are too young to know the kanji in the book.

In this case, "面" is "omo" in "omoshiroi" meaning "interesting/funny", but the character alone is "men".

"前" in this case is "mae" in "omae" meaning "you". "Omae" nowadays can be interpreted as a low, rude way of saying "you" or just an old form/country form of saying "you"; however the character alone is "zen".

Yes, he should have carved those words on the wall with his katana. But yeah, the sankyu is supposed to be written in katakana because it's not a Japanese word.
