In my new job I work with a bunch of filipinos, young and old. Since i speak REALLY crappy tagalog i always want to improve it so I told them i could sort of speak it and understand . I was doing just fine until this one time were this tagalog kid was trying to tell me to do something but he was speaking so fast that i couldnt understand him,i was like

"Huh?? ano??pasiencia indi ta ka ma intiende??

He got really mad and he ended up throwing the garbage himself LOL. On his way back he was still pissed off and said.

"Segorado ka na Pilipino ka??"

In a really serious tone Though so i just told him.

"Tsakto ka Indi Pilipino, Negreses ako".

Here in the U.S. - I have encountered Tagalog-speaking Filipinos. Many of them open up a conversation with "Are you Filipino?". Then I would reply "Yes, I am". Then he would immediately say "Uyyyy, salamat naman po at Pinoy ka rin, mabuti't nakatagpo ako ng kababayan dito sa America, taga saan po kayo sa atin?" <~~~ speaking in rapid Tagalog. And then I would calmly say "I am sorry, but I don't speak Tagalog. I am from the Visayas area... apan ikaw, - maka-istorya ba ka ug maka-sabot ug Cebuano or Visayan aron pwede ta mag-istoryahay gamit ang usa ka Filipino dialect?"

Then - Boink! confused.gif <~~~ I always get a confused look on his face.

You see the problem is: Many Tagalog-Speaking Filipinos that I have met in the U.S. always assumes that all Filipinos here know how to speak Tagalog. That is not the case.

This one pinay ask me "are you filipino" and i said "yes" Than she started speaking
Tagalog(super fast) and i said myself "what the hell did she say?" embarassedlaugh.gif2

Haha, when I first came here, I felt so lost. I could only speak very limited English so I try finding Filipinos to talk to and I often times find myself the one asking them if they're Filipino or that they speak Tagalog. I was very disappointed for a while because they all seemed to be born here in the U.S. and spoke Tagalog little to none....until I met these guys who were undergoing the same problem as I was ^_^

I worked graveyard shifts at this last year and there was an old manong from cebu who spoke no english or tagalog. But I tried talking to him in Ilongo(hiligaynon) anyway and he in cebuano LOL. It was amazing how we could pretty much understand each. He was a funny guy always talking about chicks and his misadventures back home like how he was held against his own will by a chinese family after he got thier daughter pregnant HAHAHA biggthumpup.gif.

The first time I met my PE instructor, I asked him if he speaks Tagalog, but in one of the prior cases, he's Bisaya.

I've notice here in U.S there are many association of ethnic groups from the
philippines. Maybe they should(gov) make English the official language instead
of Filipino or Pilipino.

This is why there are still times that pinoys tend to beat each other up, because of this, "regionalism". There are even fraternities just for Visayans, for Ilokanos, that sucked coz, we are all pinoys right. I'm an Ilokano - and I take pride in that, but I don't bash other pinoys from where they came from. I was born in Manila but grew up in Lanao Del Norte in Mindanao. Had Visayan, Davaoeneo, Muslim, Ibanag, Chavakano classmates there and we all get along fine. I guess as filipinos that we should study each of our regions dialects, so as to understand each other well, or at least have a national language that all filpinos will use outside our communities. icon_wink.gif

isn't there a national language already? lol..filipino?..everyone should just speak tagalog hehe..even me lol..i should learn icon_smile.gif

Officially Pilipino is the National Language of the Philippines... but a big percentage of the nation speaks/understands Visayan/Cebuano. No need to be regionalistic but Pilipino - which is always mistaken as "Tagalog" should not be the National Language of the Philippines. The National Language should be the one most spoken or used.

But the native tagalog speakers are like 21 million and filipinos with some form of education had to study it. Exchanging tagalog with cebuano wont help.

Sakto ka bay! Mabuhi ang mga bisaya!!!! Mabuhi ang taga-Mindanao!!!!

Bisaya is the widely spoken language so Bisaya should be our national language.. beerchug.gif
filipinoy
let's have many national languages, like India
Bisdak
Then we will have to include every native dialect on our textbook, since we need to know how to speak our national languages.. lol.. I think that would be harder than changing our national language to Bisaya.. embarassedlaugh.gif
filipinoy
no, just the dominate language in the region. and english to communicate to other groups(in India many ppl use English to communicate to other ppl who speak a diff. language)
Bisdak
I think we must federalized the Phil before it happens. And it sounds like English is then our national language. Poor Pinoy, no language identity.
RL33
Changing the national language to what end really?? to make us visayans feel better about ourselves...how selfish.
filipinoy
bahasa indonesia has a much worst "mother tongue" percentage than tagalog

wikipedia:

indonesia's national language is spoken as a mother tongue only by 7% of the population

It is not selfishness, I never think of that thing. I was just thinking that maybe if our national language is natively spoken by the majority of the Filipino our country will prosper. No offense but I think Cebuano speakers is more talented, honest and strong than the tagalog counterparts.. peace!!!! beerchug.gif

But dont' worry it would never happen unless I will become a dictator of the Phil.. Lol embarassedlaugh.gif2

RL33
LOL I am from western visayas and we dont speak cebuano.
Bisdak
So i guess you have nothing to be offended about since i was referring to tagalog people.
bari
im from mindanao... and i speak bisaya... also tagalog is used only as the basis for the national language, in FILIPINO, they also added parts of bisaya ilonggo etc... its just FILIPINO! i dont care if its mostly composed of tagalog as long as it unites all the filipinos, I think its one of the more prominent cultural identities that filipinos have since filipinos look like other asians, the only way u know that he's pinoy is that he speaks filipino! except ofcourse for the fil-ams, fil-(insert nationality).

Wow!!....when i fist came here no one really talked much about bisayas..now we have a revival of the bisaya peepz....kinda brings tears of joy to my eyes. neartears.gif

it has always been my belief that the bisaya people have always stood behind the tagalogs when it came to running the country....i think that the country needs some strong new perspective and that its time for the bisaya people to step up to the podium...and bring new a new perspective on how to run the government..and $hitz we got enough people to win. :genius:
