Full Version: A brief description of the Filipino People
Asia Finest Discussion Forum > Asian Culture > Filipino Chat

I thought this might be an interesting read,

A brief description of the Filipino People:

* Filipinos are descendants of Muslim Headhunting Malays that arrived to the Islands in 3 waves (2 waves from Indonesia and 1 from Malaysia.

* The Malay Race is a mixture of Indian or Arabic blood and Asian, possibly from mainland china. Arabs are from Asia so that makes us Asian.

* We are not Pacific Islanders but we are related. Through artifacts such as pottery and farming instruments anthropologists have been able to trace a theoretical migration of the Polynesian people.

* We are also related through language groups. Just like the majority of European Languages are Latin based our language comes from the Austronesian branch called the MALAYO-POLYNESIAN LINGUISTIC GROUP. do a search and you will find charts that show similar words and you can see the transition.

Um the first Malays or the Proto-Malays like the igorot, Lumad, and various other highland tribes are not mixed with outside influence. It is the Detuero-Malays or Coastal Malays who would have some arabic, chinese or indian blood.
Kanlungan
The upland tribes, especially the Ibalois and kankanays are said to have Chinese blood. Many of them can pass for Chinese, actually. icon_smile.gif

I jst wanted to comment on tis:

First of all Filipinos are not a descendant of Muslim headhnting Malays..Muslim religion was introduced only 100 years before Catholicism was introduced in the Philippines. Before that Filipinos are pagans. In short, Lapu-lapu was not muslim, and Humabon who wlcomed Magellan and made a blood compact with him is also not Muslim. they worship the anitos, they have priestesses for that. In fact, what made the natives lure into catholcism was the image of Santo niño, who was more beautifull carved and adorned compared to the Anito idols. The queen, whic was later baptized as Juana was so enamored by these beautifull dressed idol that the festival in Cebu (I frgot the name) was commemorated after her. You know, the festival where a woman is carrying the image of Sto. Niño shouting "Pit Senyor!".

The malays have a mixture of different blood coming from the ancient civilizations of the middle east, India, Indochina, and mainland asia whom the malay peninsula have had contact with. But do not forget that Malays are more austronesian than anything else. arabs may be in asia, but the
race classification consider them is "middle eastern", so are the hindus who are considred as SOUTH asians.

We are no less related to the Malay-polynesians aka austronesians aka Pacificans. As such, our racial classificatin can be more considered to be pacifican (asian-pacifcan) rather than the more popularly-know asians which are the "orientals". Unless of course, if you have strong cinese blood, in which case most filipinos display a malay blood rather than "oriental". As such we are more related to these malay-polynesian people, compared to the viets, thais, singporeans, korenas, japanese and chinese. people wo think we are not realted to the pacificans are probably watching too much geeky asianovelas.

Our linguistic vocabulary shows our hitsory as a Filipino people, our language is connected more to the malay-polynesians with a sprinkling of indian, arab(which indirectly came from the malay peninsula), and directly with chinese and spanish vocabularies.

My 2 cents, cuz ive been reading a lot of misleading info in the forums lately...

gergoz are u malaysian?? Cuz you know Kristine Hermosa and you speak some Bahasa melayu in there, thats just cool...

anyways, ive read the word that are supposedly tagalog word that originated in malay:

sabon (soap) and lechon manok--i think its the other way around, this word did not origi9nated in malay but spanish (spanish=jabon, filipino=sabon) and (spanih:lechon de leche-meaning roasted piglet, Filipino="lechon" which also means "roasted" applied more on roasted pig but also other meats like e.g lechon manok (roasted chicken), lechon baka (roasted cow) ).

My point is that these words were borrowed by the Malays from the Filipino and not the other way around. Just like in thailand, there is this tamarind candy that is called "sampaloc" which is actually Filipino but has been a part of the Thai vocabulary for Tamarind.

Btw, have you ever heard of the famous sailboat-like yacht called "catamaran"?? its not spanish, but it means laziness in filipino..... notice it is spelt hispanically...hehehehe.could that sailboat be possible borrwed from the Phils vocabularis too?

In the upcoming movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Our native language is featured in that movie. Iyong salita ng mga pirates, tagalog! Pinoy ang mga pirates.

In the movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), there was a girl speaking in tagalog. She's Julia Cortez, the one who appeared as the villain Rita Repulsa in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie.

In The Rock (starring Nicolas Cage/Sean Connery), a cook was speaking in Tagalog... magmura! Pinoy iyon.. si Fred Salvallon iyon who starred in karate spoof Kung Phooey! (2003) and sci-fi Never Die Twice (extra lang). He has appeared in Nash Bridges.

In the Jackie Chan movie, Gorgeous (released here as High Risk --kasama niya si Shu Qi), there was a group of Pinoy singing "Leron-leron sinta" (tagalog iyon).

Can u add more?

I know the scene that you're talking about in the rock, it's the cook right? Sabi niya " Anak ng P....p...ina mo! " hehehehehe

:hmmm: I have to think about this one..

ok....I saw one, but it wasn't on film, it was on tv..I can't remember what prime time show it was..it was one of those comedy shows that..didn't last..but anyway..the bartender turned out to be Filipino and the main character, this WASP-y guy touched the bartender on the arm to which the bartender said

" Huwag mo nga akong hawakan, di mo ba alam, sa aking bansa ako ay isang banal na tao"..of course, it came with english sub titles...I was pleasantly surprised.

*How about in foreign shows? Balut is used in Fear Factor, as it is.

*The Ewoks in Return of the Jedi used a spattering of Filipino and Swedish: "Ngayon, puno daw ito," one said while C-3PO was being worshipped.

Yong african tribesman nag kapampangan!!

"Munta la queni!" in tagalog "punta sila dito"...sumunod naman yung mga puti.

*not sure if it counts, but there was a bibingka in "Deuce Bigalow." it was the 'cake' for his dad's birthday. pero ibang klaseng bibingka yata, kasi sa akin mukhang ensaymada yun eh!

i remember the writers/director of the movie wanted to change the bibingka. they said nobody knew what it was, but Rob Schneider insisted that it remain in the movie, that it was a Pinoy thing and a lot of Filipinos would understand what it was. incidentally, he is half-Pinoy and his mom always has a cameo in his movies

*It was added already but this are the details.

The Rock: Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage

there was a scene when Sean is escaping.. he bump into a filipino chef and dropped everything and the chef went "put@ng|na mo! put@ng|ina"
The cook is Fred Salvallon. PINOY!

*In the movie "Her Alibi" starring Tom Selleck and Isabela Rosselini (?), Isabela's cook was Pinay. In one scene, Tom was looking for Isabela and the cook went,"Ay ewan ko sa inyo. Parati na lang kayong naghahanapan. Ang gugulo ninyo...", or something to that effect. Basta she talked non-stop ala-Maricel Soriano.
It actually starred Paulina Porizkova, not Isabela Rosselini.

The cook also said something like, "Pagkatapos kumain lahat na lang nagsuka..." and pretended to vomit after she said it.

In the movie "Her alibi"..there was a filipino maid there who spoke harsh tagalog words.

*Well, not tagalog words, but Pinoy nontheless:

In "The Animal" (the opening scenes), Rob Schneider is wearing a "Baguio Midland Courier" t-shirt.

* Yung sa Big Fish.. There was this scene wherein the leading actor was going down from an airplane to this show.. I don't know if it was just my imaginative ears.. I heard Filipino words..
YUNG SA BIG FISH...3X SIGURO NAMIN NI REWING UN SA VCD(COURTESY OF VIDEO CITY)
that start was slightly mumbled..."haay kanina pa ako nagsasalita dito, hawak ka ng hawak sa akin akala mo pawis yan, di mo lang alam ihi na yan" or something to that effect

un ung act before lumabas ung weird na SIAMESE TWINS,,,watch it kung di nyo pa napapanood...Its quite entertaining...

*Constantine

"Papatayin ko kayo"
Eto ang sinabi "Papatayin ka namin"

And on the veri first scene were the mom are getting water from teh faucet there's a Philippine Flag on the right side of the sink.

Cool

Peace
Hehehehe... expression ko iyong "PAPATAYIN KO KAYO" dahil hindi ko napost earlier.

Actually, there are two Filipino lines in Constantine. Both are said by Filipino actors.
Of course, the most popular is the PAPATAYIN NATIN SILA by Jhoanna Trias.
The second is HALIKA NA by Fil-Am Abe Pagtama, one of those who carried the big mirror.

*remember a foreign movie where Archie Adamos and other Filipino actors played pirates/bandits. And they really conversed in Tagalog. They were later eaten by the film's villain - a big crocodile.

In the airport scene in The Animal , the security guard (Black guy) pointed out a Filipino to Rob Schneider. He said something like "That Filipino at the counter...." .

Although this is not a movie, I bet many of us here can remember the Filipina child who sang "Sampung mga daliri, kamay at paa......" in one episode of the children's show Barney and friends some years ago. I think her name is Meann or something like that.

*DANTE'S PEAK, pierce brosnan said three times "... it is also like the mt. pinatubo in the Phililppines"...
AFTER THE SUNSET, pierce brosnan said, " i have sweat shop in the Philippines as my personal business there, you can see children doing the hat things"...

*in punk'd, parang the girl was Pinay naman who was pretending not to be able to speak Filipino.. kase during one part when she was thinking of a word, she said "ano" (like... did you see your "ano" already or something like that) which is an expression usually said by people who regularly speak the language.. (pero that's just me..)

*
*hindi siya tagalog pero yung sa beginning ng movie MARS ATTACKS tinanong nung isang guy dun sa family kung FILIPINO CHRISTMAS ba ngayon sa kanila...

*I was watching an ER episode & I hear a filipina nurse there saying "Ang suswerte dto ng mga doctor..." or something to dat effect. Then she was briefly interrupted by Maura Tierney's character & ask some medical questions...
There is a Pinay in ER... she is Giovannie Pico. She plays a doctor named Ludlow... recurring guesting niya... PINAY iyan!

*mron din akong napanood na sitcom yata, di ko na matandaan ung title! basta. nasa plane sila tas merong Indian na humihingi ng tubig. he mentioned the word 'tubig' so cguro tubig is also indian for h20?

*yung language ng Ents (puno creature) sa LOTR, may filipino words daw dun.

*The opening scenes for the Japanese kaiju (giant-monster) movie Gamera (jet-powered turtle w/tusks) took place in a remote Philippine village where the heroine witnessed an old lady beating a downed Gyaos (pterodactyl-like) monster...picked up elements of the vernacular

Saw it during Wowow's Gamera trilogy marathon commemorating the monster's 40th anniv

*Sa TV movie ng "Five People You Meet In Heaven", yung 5th person na batang babae nag-tagalog din. I remember her saying saya, blusa, ina, sundalo. Tapos doon sa flashback, yung mom niya nag-tagalog din - telling the little girl to stay inside the house.

*John Wayne: "Tayo na!" (Let's go). He was one of the guerillas in Back to Bataan.

*In one of the NBA games I remember they tuned into the Filipino broadcasting team. I think it was last season.

*Aswang, also known as The Unearthing was a Hollywood B-movie in 1994. It featured American actors occasionally speaking Tagalog lines. Also cast was a Filipina (Mildred Nierras), who played a central character in the movie (and was apparently the reason why the other characters know how to speak Tagalog).

A pdvd copy of this film was widely available in Quiapo.
Wasn't meant to be... but it's one of the funniest horror movies I've ever seen. American B actors trying to speak tagalog phonetically among other things....

*In the Hong Kong horror movie "Double Vision" (2002), Tony Leung Ka Fai speaks Tagalog as he arrests a pinoy illegal alien (talk about racial stereotyping!).

*I was flipping channels the other day and came across a movie showing on the Sci-Fi Channel ... it kinda had a "Waterworld" ring to it and one of the pirates who captured the blonde protagonist said "Ang ganda-ganda mo, para kang sirena" in a sing-song voice. Hee!

* havent watch the movie though, but i remembered my friend saying that the car in dr seuss' cat in the hat has a tag 'made in the philippines'.. and this is what i found:

The Cat: C'mon kids, you're gonna listen to him? He drinks where he pees!

closing the crate after Conrad opened it
Conrad: Why not? It's just a crate.
The Cat: This isn't just any old crate, it's the Transdimensional Transporterlator. It's kinda like a doorway which leads from this world to my world.
Conrad: But it says "Made in the Philippines".

Lawrence Quinn: Why am I sneezing?
tipping on Quinn's shoulder

*That stupid movie with Mark Dacascos. Yung kasama sina Joel Torre, Tom Taus and so forth. I think it was called DNA. Well that movie had a lot of Tagalog in it since it was shot in the Philippines...

In the movie Mr & Mrs. Smith, when brad pitt was describing the other assassin to his partner (vince vaugh ba yun?), vince (?) said that the other assasin might be a filipina (cause she's petite, etc.)

In one of Goodluck episode (japanese drama series), yung naglilinis ng airplane eh natapakan nung bidang guy...sumigaw ng "aray, aray, ang sakit-sakit naman" (or something to that effect). Ang nakakatawa or nakakalungkot, sa Thailand yung scene.

*sa Alias season 2 episode 12, tinago ni Sloane yung asawa niyang si Emily sa Pilipinas ...

*Sa movieng "There somthin about mary", there is a scene there na naabutan ni cameron diaz yung dad nya na naglilinis ng toilet bowl tapos binigay nya yung parang maliit na cake. tapos sabi ng dad nya "what is this, this is so delicious" tapos sabi ni cameron "that is bibingka, i bought it from the filipino bakeshop".

*hindi lang sa fear factor, pati rin sa survivor all star. sabi nung host "This is balut..prematured duck.." somethin like that..
duck embryo is what joe rogan said ...

*in a scene from the hk movie irresistible piggies, karen mok's character meets her highschool sweetheart in a restaurant. they were approached by 2 filipinos who asked them if they have any song request. karen mok says anything that's loud and they sing "panahon na para magsaya..."

*Meron din dun sa Asian Film na Double Vision, May hinuli si Tony Leung na pinoy immigrant dun sa isang scene dun sabi niya, "inarestado ka!!" Promise dude!

Tapos sabi nung pinoy huwag po! huwag po!

*from the cartoon series FAMILY GUY

Brian (police dog): sniffs Quagmire as he disembarked from the airplane you just came from Manila... you ate some lumpia... and you had sex with 2 Filipino women... sniffs again and one man.
Also, in the episode that followed it, Brian's gay cousin Jasper brought home a co-worker from the Philippines.

*LOL yeah i watched that punk'd episode too.. the reactions were hilarious haha!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
it's not really tagalog but it's something about filipina's name mentioned in sandra bullock and hugh grant's movie, two weeks notice.

it goes something like this..

george ( hugh grant ) to the maid: your hair looks terrific you look like imelda marcos...

*First five minutes of the movie "An Officer and a Gentleman" is set in Subic bay. A few Filipino words there. I beleive they have it on Cinemax this month just look for it in their website.

*"THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVEN" -- STARRING JON VOIGHT

this is now on DVD. here's a filipino line in the movie, when a mother hid her daughter in the kubo, while the young lead guy is unaware that the kid is in there.

before the fire happened, here's what the mother said:

"tago ka dito"

*Sa pelikulang Days of Being Wild ni Wong Kar Wai maraming Tagalog na dialogue.

*Just saw the Korean film "A Bittersweet Life". Mayroong part dun na nagdadialogue yung mga Filipino sa background

"Pinahihirapan tayo.."

"Ang pagkain dito...ang aanghang!"

..then in the next scene, they gang up on the protagonist in his house with clubs and knives

"Patay ka na!!!"
bari
the coolest ppl on earth! invisible minority tlaga tau hehehe!

your description of the Filipino People is not brief. For me Filipinos (as a culture of diverse people) is not easy to describe.

am not talking about the other articles below but on this article
supposedly from Art Bell. Siguro parang binago nang konte ang content
nito but I can still remember na Art Bel article din yong nareceive
ko sometime in 1999 or 1998. I was also touched that I also emailed
Art Bel kase may binigay na email adress noon. Then I received an
auto reply na wala pa lang isinulat or brinodcast si Art Bel and it
was all just hoax. Ang dami dawng galit na Pinoy na nag-email sa
kanya kaya may auto-reply na siya kaagad with matching detailed
explaination of the issue.

've been travelling since I was in SD so.... and I grew up overseas since SMA.

I've been to :

Asia
Singapore - Indo everywhere, dislike Singlish, but like the chicken rice
Malaysia (KL, Penang, Johor Baru, Genting) - Not memorable, except for Genting
Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya Beach) - Nice place, good food, but I prefer Bali really
China (Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong, XiaMen, ChengDu, GuiLin, ShenZhen, Xi'an, Nanjing) - China is nice, a lot of historical sites, huge country but dirty
Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Yokohama, Osaka, Nagoya, Mt. Fuji) - Very nice country, admirable people, serene, but so expensive
South Korea (Seoul) - Koreans do know how to party and drink (enough said!)
Hongkong - Nice and vibrant, good food, amazing skyline, but too hot and humid in the Summer
The Phillipines (Manila) - Just like Jakarta but worse
Taiwan (Taipei) - My good friend lives here, so she took me around and showed me all the cool places, I liked it, but I prefer HK

USA & Canada
Los Angeles - Nice city I love it, I lived here for a while, very relaxing pace
New York (I live here) - The best city in the world only if you have the energy
San Diego - Nice and beautiful but not my cup of tea
San Francisco - Romantic city if you live here with your love one, you feel in heaven
Seattle - Another beautiful city and relaxing, but the rain is killing me, the pace is too laid back
Vancouver - Very beautiful, the scenery is awesome, amazing Asian food
Chicago - Beautiful architecture but too cold for me
Indianapolis - Boring boring
Columbus, Ohio - The largest concentration of Indo students in Ohio State University but other than that boring
Boston - Nice city, very historical, relaxing, everything you want is here, and full of Indos
Atlanta - Also nice, but could get rough at night sometimes and some racists are still around
Miami - Nice city but a lot of sun, and you better do some workout otherwise don't open your shirts.
Orlando - Too kiddy for me, Universal Studio & World Disney are here
Washington DC - Ugly, I thought the house in Pondok Indah is even better and bigger than The White House, the city is dangerous too
St Louis - Other than the BBQ ribs, I don't see anything else
Philadelphia - The city sucks and full of crime, but has good schools
Houston - OK, very boring. I only like the Tex-Mex food and steaks
Dallas - Boring, very industrial
St Antonio - Nice Boardwalk but that's it
Minneapolis - The Largest and Most boring mall in the USA is here
Denver - Beautiful place in the winter time
Honolulu, Hawaii - Nice place, good food but expensive
Toronto - Asian paradise in the East Coast, feel like you're in Hong Kong
Las Vegas - Adult's Playground, the sin city enough said, but I can't stay here more than 3-4 days
Louisville - The first KFC, that's about it
Cincinnati - Very industrial
Buffallo - Boring and dead, but Niagara Falls is near

Central & South America
Brazil (Rio de Janeiro) - One of the most beautiful city in the world. I have to admit, the view from the big Jesus statue was amazing

Carribean
St Bart - Very nice resort but it gets too crowded now
St Martin - Love it and very relaxing, especially the private beach
US Virgin Island - Too many people and you feel like you're in US, since they're all Americans
St Thomas - I love it, very exclusive

Europe
UK (London) - Love Londoners with their manners and tea cultures. Damn expensive though
France (Paris, Lyon, Nice) - I love Paris, the city of Lights, French food, French pastries, French museums, French fashion, what more could u ask for ?
Germany (Berlin, Frankfurt) - Berlin is nice, a lot of cool buildings, but German people are too stiff for me
Belgium (Brussels) - Nice blend of French and Germany but I prefer France
Netherland (Amsterdam) - Too liberal, don't these people work ?
Spain (Barcellona) - Beautiful city amazing architecture and good tapas bars
Italy (Florence, Rome, Venice, Milan) - Awesome country with tons of culture and beautiful places, not to mention the food

Middle East
UEA (Dubai) - Ouch, I thought I was in the dreamland, this is the city of tomorrow

Africa
South Africa (Johanesburg) - Nice city and beach view but it gets scary at night

Australia
Sydney - Very nice city the view by the bridge near the Opera house is classic
Perth - Feels like you're in Indo
Melbourne - Just ok, maybe because I live in NYC. I prefer Sydney

By knowing or identifying the stuff that Filipinos do to make them look bad, we can therefore avoid doing these things and move forward as a proud culture and nation.

1. Always late in appointments. - Most call this as "Filipino Time". Try to avoid being late.

2. Procrastination. - Or to put off intentionally the doing of something that should be done. Filipinos have this bad habit of trying to postpone anything. Why not keep a strict schedule and stick to it.

3. Crab Mentality. - Especially Filipinos here in America - they tend to push their fellow-Filipinos down. I'm all for healthy competition but please not this crab mentality thing.

4. Filipinos trying to disown their heritage. - this is so damaging to our culture. Nothing could possibly be worse than this.
I opened a topic at the AF Lounge "What do you think about Filipinos" and I got this reply from AF Super Star Jareth Chong.

"I once overheard two non-Filipino Asian gay men talking about Filipino men. The first gay man said he would never date a Filipino man. The second gay man asked why. The first gay man replied: "What's the point of dating a Filipino man? They're too feminine and soft. I might as well date a woman."

This may not be very relevent to the topic at hand but I just thought we Filipinos (straight male or female, gay, lesbian, young, old, fat, thin, tall, short, whatever) should know what other cultures think of us. It is interesting and quite informative (sometimes).
5. Any more?

I think it is time to deal with the bad things that we do to make us look bad and correct them ASAP.
