You should be proud of being whatever you are IMO, so long you have reasons to do so. Many will say, "Just be proud of what you are" but I personally am only proud of it if there is something that the people are (such as loving, etc).

If a Filipino is proud of being Filipino, they should BE proud of being Filipino. One thing I noticed from many I have come in contact with is that some like to claim that they are Hawaiian (which is far from the fact) also addressed here,

http://www.asiafinest.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=45657

They shouldn't be trying to be something they are not. Be proud of your culture and with what you have, do not go and take someone elses. It screws up the people you are imitating as well as your own people. It goes for everyone, but I just brought it up as I noticed a lot of Filipinos do this.

If you are going to be proud, be proud of what you are.

nobody has to be proud of anything if they dont want to be....but main reason to be proud would be that you wont find many who are as diverse, culturaly rich and has my traditions as us...not many know about them though because its not marketed to the world. heck alot dont even know that we have our own martial arts and even these martial arts come in 100's of diferent forms. Many a great things have come from the philippines and from the filipino people but it seems alot of idiot seem to just think of the negatives which dont even equal the crap which come from other countries. WE need a beter prapaganda machine. cool30.gif

anyway theres a alot to be proud of but if you grew up being told that being filipino or part filipino is bad then i dont know if i can convince you to be proud...you'll have to find that reason yourself icon_wink.gif

You said: "for almost all my life the filipino's around here have had a bad reputation.Theres almost always cr@p talk about them about the country, the people...and then theres the names and the ongoing slur about prostitution and mail-order brides"

What City do you live?

I've heard so many stories that people say such and such bad things about Filipinos. I live in a State with the most number of Filipinos reside - California (USA) - but NEVER FOR ONCE have any person said to my face that I eat dogs and that I come from a country where mail-order brides are rampant.

You said: "Sure i know a fair bit about it's history it's culture and celebrations from the internet and books but i also think theres nothing better then hearing it straight from it's inhabitants."

Okay so you wanna hear it from me? Here we go: Back in the Philippines we grow dogs for food. We do it because it is completely legal. Matter of fact when I was in the 5th grade we had a total of 26 dogs in the house and every other week I pull out my 22-caliber rifle and shoot two of them for food. Our dogs practice some sort of incest in order to multiply, but we control their dog population low by eating two of them twice a month. Also, two of my cousins are Japayukis - entertainers in Japan. They joined the Japayuki bandwagon because it is also a legal thing to do. LOL. stress on the word "legal". Both my Japayuki cousins are now happily married to Japanese men and have children of their own. Also, three of my neighbors are mail-order brides - and again they do that because it is ... guess what? L E G A L. I can't stress it enough. One was married to an 89-year-old American fart, one was married to a 76-year old (fart also), and the third was married to a 91-year-old-retired-cook-comedian-pensionaire-wheelchair-riding-diaper-wearing-vegetable-sick-old-fart. So?

You said: "And as you stated yes im a pure human being so isn't it only human to want to know other peoples opinions other peoples experiences confused.gif this after all is what makes the world a more interesting place. icon_neutral.gif"

Just between two human beings, let's have a party!

Not to sound disrespectful to anyone, but I have noticed that a lot of asians (I've seen a lot of Filipinos personally) try to act Polynesian (Mostly Hawaiian for that matter).

I am pure Filipino, born and raised in the Philippines. Sometimes I act like I'm a Martian (i.e. somebody from the planet Mars) - I use a costume that is supposedly a semblance of a creature from Mars. Okay, nobody has ever seen a real Martian or perhaps there's actually no creature from Mars... but I just thought I'd throw an example in just for the sake of argumentation/debate - LOL. Anyways, like I said - I sometimes act "Martian" - so, is that illegal? How about if I act German - like I would do the Hitler-type of salute everytime I meet somebody. Is acting "German" illegal too? Wait, does saluting like Hitler constitute acting "German"? Well, here's your poor, pea-brain argument, you said: "...another sad thing is that the real halau (Hula School) has many teachings which is often ignored by people who are trying to do it, and in the end, the principles of it is gone and all they do is imitate what they see, you can tell the real thing from the fakes. A lot of the people that claim they know how to do Hula only shakes their hips and have no idea what the heck they are doing. I have no problem if they do it, but do not make a mockery of our arts, it goes back a long way and it means a lot to the people." So... some Asians (or Filipinos for that matter) in Hawaii attend your Hula School, and then they make a mockery of your arts just because they shake only shake their hips without having the idea of what the heck they are doing? <~~~ what kind of crappy argument is that? If I go to Hawaii and then attend your Hula School, and then dance the Hula which would constitute "acting Hawaiian" per your poor argument, what is so illegal and wrong with that? What is wrong with a Filipino trying to learn your dance? What is wrong with a Filipino going to Broadway and trying to learn broadway-style dancing? You fu-king idiot.

Ya, Filipinos and people in general need to stop that, our Identity as a people is screwed because now people think Filipinos are the real Hawaiians!

As for the Pacific Islander thing, technically it is true. But if this is the case, then everyone would need to accept Korea, Japan and other countries as Pacific Islanders as well because it's the same deal. However Pacific Islander in the beginning meant Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia only, Filipinos however started to call themselves Pacific Islander but I don't know why and the when. Perhaps it has to go in accordance with how they don't like to call themselves Filipinos but something else like Hawaiian. I have no idea why they would not like to envelop their own people, but they like to get someone elses and abandon their own. I find this degrading to both peoples, my own and their own since they are also saying, "Ancestors, you are not good enough".

fu-k you. I did not defend anybody who claim other people's cultures. If you were not defending any one, why did you open your big mouth? Read everything I said, I said it's ok to learn it, but you need to LEARN and not imitate or pass yourself off as it.

Acting German is different, you are not trying to pass yourself off as them. If you start to tell people, "O I am German" and not "I am Filipino", that is wrong. Don't take other peoples culture and claim it as your own. Read my thread and you'll see what I am talking about, even the Filipinos agree with me as they have seen it.

It's a respect for other peoples culture and way of life. If you want to be an @$$ and take on what someones culture has been built on for thousands of years, you are an @$$hole not only to them, but to your own people for being ashamed of them and claiming someone elses as your own.

Theres no law that says , "You can't curse at people just because they are ugly", it is just wrong.

Hrmm Im kind of confused then. Perhaps we misunderstoof each other? I hear that you say here that you ridiculed them that claim it, then why did you talk to me about me saying it's wrong for them to claim being Hawaiian? Im a bit puzzled.

Our Identity. First, ask many people are Hawaiians asian? Many will say yes. Then you will also hear Filipinos being called Hawaiian or asked, "Are you Hawaiian? Are you Filipino?" The real Hawaiians arent even seen as Hawaiians, they are thought that they are black instead and that hte Filipinos are the real Hawaiians.

You have to be under a rock or something to have never heard this go on. You even said so on that you ridicule people that do it. Are there statistics? Are people going around with a survey, "Are you Filipino but claim to be Hawaiian?". Just look in my thread and you will see that I am not the only one that stands by this claim, even Filipinos themselves see this.

Bury it all you want, it will not erase the facts.

Okay okay ..."calm down.. sure.gif i was just asking people whether or not they where proud of their culture ..thats all im not saying that we should't be.Where iv'e been growing up for almost all my life the filipino's around here have had a bad reputation.Theres almost always cr@p talk about them about the country, the people...and then theres the names and the ongoing slur about prostitution and mail-order brides..just like takeaway - it's an ongoing thing sure.gif especially since iv'e grown up with it. And yes i do know how to use a phone and all the other electronics you so kindly listed but i dont happen to have some of those things . For once i wanted to hear what filipino's thought people who live in the "actual" country not the ones who obviously are not proud and claim to be hawaiin or whatever Talktohand.gif and yes being of mixed parentage may not make me special in any way but i think this contributes a lot to my lack of knowledge regarding the Philippines.Sure i know a fair bit about it's history it's culture and celebrations from the internet and books but i also think theres nothing better then hearing it straight from it's inhabitants.

And as you stated yes im a pure human being so isn't it only human to want to know other peoples opinions other peoples experiences confused.gif this after all is what makes the world a more interesting place. icon_neutral.gif

Just between two human beings, let's have a party!

oh bravo what an interesting argument sure.gif like i said before that is just the way things are around here, there are the good people and the bad eggs i was merely asking the opinions of others as to what they thought about being a filipino and living in the philipines nothing more.Did i ever say i was not proud of being filipino?i was born there for gods sakes.

As for the mail order brides and prostitutes or as you call them "entertainers" i was curious as to how the filipino's obtained this stereotype because as far as i know there are prostitutes and mail order brides from many countries not only the philippines.

And when did i say anything about the dogs sure.gif as far as im concerned it's the Koreans around here that have that kind of stereotype or the Chinese.

Maybe it's best if i hear about the people and it's culture from someone who isn't so obviously stuck on seeing the negative side of things. sure.gif

Okay, therefore since you claim to have "other non white side"... then you have a white side... plain and simple logic. White side - mmm. let me see... caucasian? it actually depends on the person. we can't say we should be proud being a filipino. no matter what others say, if you're not proud, then you're not... you can't force people to be proud when in fact they find their own blood and race disgusting. for my part, i am proud being a filipino, a resilient group of people, because if other nations were in our shoes right now, they would have been extinct a long time ago.

Not to sound disrespectful to anyone, but I have noticed that a lot of asians (I've seen a lot of Filipinos personally) try to act Polynesian (Mostly Hawaiian for that matter).
*

*

I addressed this in the other thread, and I found your stance pretty funny, defending those that claim other peoples cultures and people, the exact people I dislike. Be proud of your own culture for crying out loud and stop claiming something you are not. "Tarandado" icon_smile.gif

Also its not wrong to learn it, LEARN is the keyword. I also addressed that in the other thread.
*

But you have to admit that there are a lot and i mean "alot" of Filipino's claiming to be someone they are not especially the ones that live in other countries. Now i am not saying they are all like this but there are the filipino's who do claim to be Pacific islander not asian or Hawaiin before i started reading up on it's history and culture there were so many saying this that it got me and many non-filipino's believing this cr@p.Which goes to show are they proud of their culture? sure.gif. You can't deny the fact that with many people confused whether we are Pacific Islanders or asian we really only have ourselves to blame. But im not saying we are all like that, now im proud to state the fact that im a filipino girl growing up in Aus im proud of the culture i know so far and how even though so many foreigners in the past have tried to bring us down we managed to stick together and pull through. With this said i know that with there determination and strength i know someday Philippines will be one of the Greater Countries biggthumpup.gif "did any of this make sense"? embarassedlaugh.gif2
*

That wasn't written towards me was it? You already know my stance and agreed with it and I agree with yours as well. Like I mentioned, not only is that a slap in my peoples face but also their ancestors who are Filipino, as if they are not good enough so they try to take on someone elses. Glad that you are a Filipino and you haven't been drawn into that crowd.

BTW, as for your last sentence of it being a "Greater Country", it's hard to say with all that corruption going on. Marcos and this new president. She rigged the elections, then the public found out, she apoligized, but still didn't step down. I personally believe that the Phillipines have a long way to go. Not that the USA is anymore innocent though.

it actually depends on the person. we can't say we should be proud being a filipino. no matter what others say, if you're not proud, then you're not... you can't force people to be proud when in fact they find their own blood and race disgusting. for my part, i am proud being a filipino, a resilient group of people, because if other nations were in our shoes right now, they would have been extinct a long time ago.
*

Exactly my belief there. Not necessarily disgusting (although it can be that as well) but just not taken a liking to it. You shouldn't just be proud just because, you should have reasons.

nobody has to be proud of anything if they dont want to be....but main reason to be proud would be that you wont find many who are as diverse, culturaly rich and has my traditions as us...not many know about them though because its not marketed to the world. heck alot dont even know that we have our own martial arts and even these martial arts come in 100's of diferent forms.

^LOl why is that even a question? Anybody whos anybody should be proud of where they come from and there origins be it from any culture. Im chinese and I think you guys have alot to be proud of. If you look long and hard enough you'll see alot of aspects within your culture you should be proud of which leads me to say again that there shouldn't even be a question. Its kind of funny because east asians like chinese japanese and koreans sometimes go overboard with there pride but you guys keep questioning on whether or not you want to even be affialiated with yours. Anyways, everytime I see postings of supposedly Chinese people (like you embarassedlaugh.gif ) here in the Filipino Chat - I always picture my neighbor.
