Some that I can think of right now :

Zatoichi (the new 2004 version)
Red Shadow
Azumi (cute Japanese gal kills thousands of men with sword)
meiki
Returner

I think series, drama´s are more popular in Japan. Just like in China.
hikaru rhaine

I never did see the first one, but Azumi 2 was $hitty.

Sanctuary was great, but it didn't have fight scenes.
I can't think of any decent Japanese movies that do.
The ones I like usually handle fighting in a more realistic way (i.e: the fights are messy (not pretty), and end fast).
LOVEWHIZ
ff7 fight scenes were crazy
Sae
^ fights done by human actors, pal biggrin.gif

None that I can think of, there are some good korean ones though, Fighter in the wind have some nice fighting choreography. But still, all the good stuff belongs to HK, even though they are very layed back with producing action (fighting) movies right now. Are waiting for SPL with Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung, this will surely be the next HK-action sucess.

Japanese movies don't really have good fight scenes in their movies. Their Samurai are so-so.

But I did find "Azumi" (part 1 ONLY) to be REALLY entertaining. It was really cool to watch with neat music and sometimes the fight scenes WERE really great!!! Especially the whole scene at night in the village with the master and 2 of the assassins. So I guess Azumi. biggthumpup.gif

Zatoichi (2003) had 1 scene that looked cool. The scene where "yojimbo" fights a gang of yakuzas in a field. It was cool cuz it reminded me of "Azumi" embarassedlaugh.gif

"When the Last Sword is Drawn" has some decent fight scenes although it's not an all out action film. More Drama....cool movie though.

POOR fighting movies= VERSUS...really boring fights although there were alot! Godzilla Final Wars had the same style fights too cuz it was the same director.

I don't know too much about Japanese movies, but I really liked "Princess Blade", the guy in it was really cute and I liked how the girl in it fought.

Never saw the first part of Azumi, but the second part was queer....like she was killing the guys, but at the same time, her sword is not even touching them, otherwise it's not even a fatal blow!!

Princess Blade, I didn't like this one either, it was too depressing. Plus the movie seemed to drag on. And the chick, she was not good at fighting, just got lucky only.

I dont know, I'm not really into j@p films cause they disappoint me. Specially the horror films. They just crack me up.

The first Azumi was directed by the ORIGINAL director (Ryuhei Kitamura) who knew how to make the movie look good even with the limited talent of his actors. The fights in part 1 were way more fun to watch than part 2...part 2 is total crap...After Azumi 1, Kitamura I guess sold the movie to another director and concentrated on making the final Godzilla movie (which was crap IMO embarassedlaugh.gif )

You should give Azumi 1 a watch and just see what you think....it's not a classic, but it's a fun film with a decent story and other elements to it. There's a totally different feel to it than part 2.

IMO....the movie "Samurai Fiction" woulda been in instant classic if all of the fights were more intense looking and better choreographed. Only the Ninja training scene looked kinda cool.

Check this one out ... it's pretty descent new Ninja movie

RED SHADOW

LiuMaiShenJian
TWILIGHT SAMURAI

LiuMaiShenJian
The New Zatoichi (2004)

Takeshi Kitano as the new Zatoichi with blonde hair and digital blood, but the swordfight scenes look great.

lilasiankid
Red Shadow had really weak fight scenes.....I remember the only scene that almost looked cool was the scene where the ninja guy fights off these discs thrown at him with his sword. I wish they crossed swords like that!!!

Twilight Samurai had 2 fights....which were more realistic style fights...they looked good for the movie...That movie is mostly drama...but it's pretty good drama...so it's almost like watching a good fight movie! embarassedlaugh.gif

Another movie "GOJOE".......has fast paced fighting with samurai swords....almost like wuxia style.........But I hated it....you could hardly see the fighting due to the handheld camera just moving around crazy.....and that movie drags....ending fights sucks too.....tons of samurai running around looks cool though.
