E-Real Records brings first Fil-Am artist to Manila

By JOJO P. PANALIGAN

After releasing the albums of Manila-based Filipino acts Blow and Sheree, E-Real Records puts on local shelves the album of 6th Day, a vocal quartet composed of Filipino-Americans based in the US.

Cyrus Mallare, Jose Panala, Andrey Silva and Errol Viray a.k.a. 6th Day are currently in the country to promote their debut album via mall shows, bar tour and TV and radio guestings. Each member came from US bands Innerlude, Drop N’ Harmony, and Kai prior to forming the group six days after meeting on Dec. 1, 2003 (hence the name) to write and record a song dubbed "Your Call" that’s dedicated to victims of the September 11 tragedy. The recent album launch tendered for 6th Day at Discovery Suites by E-Real Records yielded stories of hardships they had to put up with as Filipino artists trying to make it in the US scene. "We once performed at the Apollo that’s acknowledged as one of the toughest venues to conquer for its unforgiving crowd," says Errol. "True enough, the moment people saw us onstage—saw our skin color—they started booing and hissing. It was only when we started singing did people shut up. By the time our song ended, everyone was on his feet applauding wildly and giving us respect." Jose also stressed that not all that glitters is gold as far as opportunities of breaking in the US music scene is concerned. He recalled a time when they met Shawn Stockman of BoyzIIMen at a concert. Fortuitously, he was picked in the crowd to sing some lines that earned for him an invitation to present his group backstage after the show. "Shawn was obviously impressed. But you know what happened? We had to wait for more than an hour before we were allowed by the guards to go to their rooms. When BoyzIIMen finally saw us, they made us sing after which they got our numbers and promised to call. Guess what? They didn’t," Jose says. The group believes though that it’s only a matter of time before a Filipino makes it big internationally. They cited the recent ‘breakthrough’ "American Idol" finalists Jasmine Trias and Camille Velasco (both of Filipino roots) had made which somewhat united Filipinos in the US at the time. "I remember texting votes incessantly after Simon told Jasmine in the show that she’ll never make it," says Andrey. "And every time I would send a vote, I’d say ‘Take that Simon!’ It really became sort of a crusade for me and many Filipinos to raise our flag and not just allow anyone to trample on us because of who we are." During spare time, members of 6th Day update themselves on what’s hot locally by watching shows in the TFC channel. Not oblivious to the current singing contest cum reality show rage, they cite Sheryn Regis as one of the new acts that could give other international stars a run for their money. "Vocally, that girl is unbelievable," says Cyrus. "She could make it anywhere if only she be given the right support and packaging." They are also aware that alternative music is what’s being played on local radio right now. "Who knows, we might even collaborate with one of the hot bands here to pioneer a new sound? Though we are integrally a vocal group, we are not afraid to try new things if it means musical growth and reaching people." Finally, there’s 6th Day’s hero-of-the-moment: Allan Pineda of The Blackeyed Peas. "With ‘Bebot,’ a cut from his group’s latest album that’s played widely in the US today despite its Tagalog lyrics, he proves that language and nationality are not barriers at all to widespread acceptance by an international audience. If he can do it, then so can other Filipinos in time," says Errol. 6th Day performs live today at Robinson’s Dasmariñas Cavite.
