He said, even if you are born in Japan, that even your family has been living there for generations, you are still a visitor.

Only Japanese decendants are citizens, you CAN NOT gained citizenship in Japan, it can only be given at birth by your Japanese parents.

All others are VISITORS/ TEMP. RESIDENTS. And are treated accordingly in society. (HIIJIME they call them, a special treatment for non-Japanese)

Their passport is branded differently, their ID notes their Korean decendancy, etc.

Is this discrimination? What does citizenship means in Japan? Why does this not outrage international community?

It's the same in Korea too.

Japanese and korean goverment don't welcome outsiders to their country. They prefer to have their own races in the country. Unlike Singapore, they accept everyone as long you have the knowledge and brain.

Well, not only Singapore...
Many other countries too and US is one
good example.
Japan and Korea is unlike Singapore
in the sense that they are both homogenous
countries and also Japanese and Korean is
both a nationality and ethnicity.

Anyone who wish to live in Japan and become a wapanese. Just quit it. Because with the arrogant style of the Japan, you will never going to have a chance to live in Japan.

my sister has a friend who is black and was born in japan and was raised there and when he came to the US at an early age he had a heavy accent and kids teased him.

I always wondered about nationality issues with other countries...thanks for clearning that up.!

It's not fair to label the whole of Japan as arrogant.
What the government dictates does not necessary
means what the people of Japan wants.
As a Japanese, I think this rule is not right
and I really feel for people who have lived in Japan
all their life but not accepted as its citizens. icon_sad.gif

I don't like it either but nonetheless, Japan is having a population problem (along with china), and needs to conserve resources.

I don't understand why so many people like Japan where the goverment don't welcome them. Any people here like Japan? Can you voice your reason why you like Japan so much?

You don't disappreciate a country based on it's government alone.

I'm curious but what are the advantages of becoming a Japanese citizen?

I've read of people who live in Japan who are not of Japanese decent and still living a rather normal life there.

I don't live in Japan.

I have to move out of the country.

I've heard that if you are not a citizen, you can't get traffic tickets (i.e.: speeding tickets, etc.)
something about not having a citizen number to attach the paperwork to
is this true?

That is not true. My mother still holds her Japanese passport. Its just that there is no dual citizenship clause in the Japanese constitution. So that means even after 17 years here, she is still considered a landed immigrant not a full citizen.

Politics aside,
Japan is an excellent place to immerse yourself into a traditional-based culture which also keeps up with modern times. In the cities, you can have a very active night life where people are friendly. Where just outside the city in the more rural areas, you can visit an onsen and watch the cha no yu performed daily. Also, many companies station their East Asian headquarters in Tokyo so you'll have your centre of commerce. Its like most metropolitan centres in the world.

Please dont let your bias of Imperial Japan cloud your thoughts. And to counter your thought, why do you have such a disdain for Japan?
