(My signature has pictures of Gong Li, one of a scene in MoaG, and the other is Gackt. Because theyīre both talented and have admirable personalities.)

(Donīt know why I wrote the above, but maybe you thought it had a japanese emphasis, but I just like those persons).
missmiyouko
;_; i don't like it either =\ they're so gay...japanese movie...with chinese actors arrrgg >_> especially ziyi! ;alskdjflkj meh

yes of course i'm seeing it. defintely...pretty sure it would be better if it was mostly all japanese actors/actresses
charlee
We already had a thread about this movie......

Everyone moaned about.........

Zhang Ziyi
The crappy accents
It's done in English
The white guy who wrote the book
It's fiction
Chinese cast apart from Ken Watanabe
Some of the costumes aren't really designed from authentic Geisha Kimonos
Some of the make up isn't done authentic geisha style

But everyone resolved that.......

the cinematography looked beautiful
the book would probably be better
it was a good book
the movie still looks worth watching!

I agree with all of the above.......good book......looks a good film too! biggthumpup.gif

i want to go see the movie...i tried reading the book....but i'm kind got bored and forgot about it!! now i want to go and watch it!!!
meiki
Er, why do you want it to see it badly?

Iīd like to see it too, and thatīs because the book was good, itīs interesting to see chinese acting (as japanese) in a big american movie, that will be nominated for an oscar, and the whole story is interesting, a lot of culture and beauty and emotions, and great actors like Gong Li.
meiki
and Iīd like to see the b!tch Hatsumomo in action
Jasel
meiki please don't double post. verbal warning.

It's because of publicity reasons. Big names are good for the movie. That's why Ziyi is there. Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh and Ken Watanabe too. All pretty big names for Asian actors/actresses in the US.

I still wish they casted Koyuki. icon_confused.gif

Yeah there was a thread on this already...with lots of discussion, like Charlee said. embarassedlaugh.gif
chickery
just out of curiosity... how many people know what a geisha really is...
chynagongju
Whoever read the book should know.
chickery
i havent read it, but there are an alarming amount of people who think geisha equates to prostitute

Geisha is geisha, their is no such thing as prostitute for a geisha.

did you read what i wrote?

obviously not. im sorry i wrote that in such plain english that no one understood.

i said there are an alarming amount of people who think "geisha" equates to "prostitute".

when i went to japan, a lot of my friends saw a geisha and thought she was a prostitute (they are mostly caucasian). its a common sterotype.

white lotus, actually, there ARE geishas that can be loosly referred to as high class prostitutes. since their performances are so expensive, its only the rich business class that have the money to see a geisha; many men become suitors and a geisha may or may not become involved with that person.

Never heard, never seen before. I don't think geisha is like that, in those high class prostitutes.

Why would ppl think of geisha that way? I thought geisha was just only the ppl who train to entertain the men, not being a prostitute kind of way.

Besides, they don't even dress like a prost., where would ppl get that idea from. icon_neutral.gif
chynagongju
It is a common misconception of the Westerners on this aspect of Japanese culture.

Chickery is right though, they can be referred that way though. Since traditionally, men did bid for her virginity and to become her suitor to provide her with clothes and funds so that she was the only one who would entertain him. [This is also seen through the book.]

Wasn't the goal of geisha to get one permanent well off suitor?
lilasiankid
My English teacher in my Senior year in High school gave me that book to read.....I thought it was totally gay and so I read "MUSASHI" instead!!! DAMN, Those books are SWEET! Good movies too!

But anyways, I keep picturing the actresses in "Memoirs of a geisha" to be fighting eachother wushu-style.... embarassedlaugh.gif2

Why are they not some HOT @$$ Japanese actresses and are Chinese actresses instead? Zhang Ziyi or whatever is so overrated...totally not hot.....I could picture a way finer j@p girl doing that "eye thing" to the bicycle man embarassedlaugh.gif2 embarassedlaugh.gif2

Is it an American production???

There are certainly talented and pretty japanese actresses for the role of Sayuri, like Kou Shibasaki, that crazy girl in Battle Royale.

I've seen some of her drama's or series whatever you like to call it, and she's really good.

(and she can sing, like, for real)

geishas only wear traditional japanese kimonos while entertaining. i dont know if you realize the certain connotations that the history of a kimono gives.

the very structure of a kimono is layers of garmets held together solely by an obi. when the kimono was designed, part of its function was for men to be able to look through the loong open sleeves at women's breasts. the garment is bound by the obi so that a man could quickly pull it off in a sexual act.
