QUOTE
Flip is a term used colloquially by Filipino American youth to refer to those of Filipino descent.

According to the late journalist and activist Alex Fabros, Sr. (1903-1999), the term was first used among Filipinos sometime after his immigration to the United States in 1929.

The term came into widespread use in the 1980's and the 1990's.

While Flip is usually used inoffensively, it is popular belief that the term is an acronym which stands for fu-king Little Island People. This claim, however, is an urban legend. In response, many young Filipino Americans changed the first word in the acronym to funny, fine, or friendly.

There are Filipinos who do avoid the term for other reasons and prefered to be simply called Filipino instead.

Aunt Tomasina
(Filipinas) a Filipina who "kisses up" to whites, a "sellout" Filipina counterpart of Aunt Jemima

Dog Eater / Dog Muncher
(U.S.) someone of Filipino, Korean or Vietnamese descent. 'Dog Eater'

Filippa
(Italy) a Filipina

Flip
(U.S.) a person of Filipino descent. Used in the 80’s and early 90’s by Filipino American youths from Chicago born in the US as a contraction of “Filipino”. Considered derogatory in Hawaii, but generally acceptable in other U.S. states. It is not true that the term was invented by American troops stationed in the Philippines, or that it is an acronym for "fu-king (or Flippin') Little Island People".

g@@k
(U.S.) military slang since 1899, applied initially to Filipinos during the Filipino insurrection of 1899, and later revived for Asians during the Korean War and Vietnam War; It derives from Gugus, the Tagalog word for "tutelary spirit". May have gained currency during the Korean conflict, since "g@@k" in Korean means "country"; "Mig@@k" is "American" (literally translated, 'Mig@@k' means 'beautiful country') and "hang@@k" is "Korea." Popularized to include any Asian after its widespread use during the Korean War.

Jalapeno
(Hawaii) Japanese-Filipino (not necessarily offensive)

Little brown fu-king machine (usually abbreviated to LBFM)
(English Language Internet) a Filipina, Thai, or Singaporean prostitute

Pogy
(U.S. Navy) A young Filipino woman. Candy is referred to as "Pogy bait".

Rice Picker
(UK Commonwealth & U.S.) a Filipino, Viet, Cambodian, or any other south-east Asian.

Me... I find it offensive especially since the word "flip" itself means "crazy". And now you say, it stands for "fu*** little island people"? I mean, who gave these people the right to feel superior? God created man... He did not just create Americans, Hawaiians and just let the Filipinos breed from somewhere.

Anyway, racism is still a big problem all over the world. It's not that too obvious now -- unlike before where blacks have to drink water from lower faucets while whites have their drinking fountains of their own.

But things are just that way.. In cases such as these, I just think of the Serenity Prayer... "God give me the serenity to accept things which cannot be changed; Give me courage to change things which must be changed;
And the wisdom to distinguish one from the other."

We cannot stop people from looking down on Filipinos. It may be cowardice that leads these people to call us "flips"... maybe they are afraid to face the truth that we could be better than them in so many ways...

This other kind of apartheid must be banished. And it should start in this forum.

From now on, I therefore call you pacific islanders as "pricks" (or prick) depending on usage: PRICK.

Hi.. Sorry, i dont get you.. Correct me if I am wrong, but are you saying that I should not find it offensive because it's just how they call us, even if they dont know the real meaning?

If this is what you mean, then I'm sorry.. i still find it offensive. I am not giving the enemies amunition just by telling them it's offensive. Some people are using the word because they honestly dont know what it means and it's been used for a long time. Ignorance is not an excuse. People who call us "flip" doesnt automatically mean they the enemies.. they could have just been using it because they thought it's a cool word to call us, not knowing it is offensive. Now that they know what it means then it is their call as civilized people on whether to continue using the word.

I didnt know that it stood for "fu** litl island people" but I still find it derogatory just because I knew what "flip" means.

Geezz i though my @ss was pretty fukking straight forward. icon_confused.gif What it means is for @ssholes to stop going around and telling every fukking person that it is a fukking offensive word.....this "word" that was created by people who wanted to degrade the filipinos by using this word...but over time we took it back from them..we distroyed it by making it nothing...they cant degrade our people with this fukking word anymore...and so for people to fukking try and make this an offensive word again is fukking pissing me off....this was a fukking word whose offensive meaning was almost lost in time...but mother fukkers had to fukking dig it up. sure.gif

but this has really nothing to do with you...i wouldn't really give a $hit if you or other people thought the word "Blob" was offensive..ive decided that this fukking word "Flip" means nothing and anyone seeking to insult filipinos with this word can suck my c0ck cuz it means nothing. biggrin.gif

^Of course it's not derogatory, just like the way I call you "prick" = Poor Rotten Islander Constantly Kicked... not derogatory either so deal with it too.
