This topic is for the traditional clothes of the Japanese. Know of any pictures? post away! it can be from any tradtional clothes of Japan. Photos or 2D artwork is acceptable. Think of this as a collection of the national costumes of Japan. enjoy!
The Kimono is probably my second most favorite national costume in the world!

Its beautiful.

And besides, it was done by Japanese radicals. I don't think there's that many of the violent ones out there.

Oh give me a break. There are tons of clear differences between Chinese and Japanese clothes. The foreign influence is small and very ancient, and there has been a lot of isolated development since then. I can differentiate the two anyday.

Maybe I'm just nitpicking, but I'd like to know why the Japanese women walk/stand with their toes pointed inwards? Don't they trip when they walk like that? I mean, I know I would, and my mum has taught me from a young age not to walk with my toes pointing inwards..I dunno why.

Because the Japanese society, much like Korean and ancient Chinese, look down on women. Women are supposed to stay home and serve the men. When they walk with their toes pointed inwards, they can't make big steps and must walk slowly otherwise like you said, will trip and fall.

Hmm I see...I think the kimono itself is designed not to be able to make big steps in the first place since I'm assuming it's quite restricting on the legs from the looks of it. You need lots of skill to remain poised and graceful in such a garment, which is something I lack

I was merely curious because you mentioned your mom told you not to walk with your toes pointed inward and you mentioned something about not being able to walk in a kimono.

Oh, yeah I dunno when I was young she saw I was walking with my toes pointed inwards and she said it wasn't good to walk like that, so I like "Uhh, ok.." (this is probably unrelated then lol) And I've never worn a kimono before, but from the looks of it, it looks like it would restrict leg movement, but nonetheless I think they look pretty nice. I think an authentic one is pretty expensive unfortunately

Ok, you may have something there. But you must remember that early Japanese were recent decendants of mainlanders themselves, and therefore, like the early Americans immigrating from Europe, brought significant mainland culture with them and maintained strong links with mainland culture for some time. Such similarity to continental ways is to be expected early in a new island nation's settlement.

Kulong's got it right. Tho I wouldnt say women were looked down on.
I think its supposed to represent servitude and submittance to the male of the family. In Korean and Chinese families, the male has severe control over his family. In a feudal era Japanese family, especialy that of a samurai, it is even more strict. Essentially the father's word is law and usually they would not like an outspoken/outgoing spouse.

It's really troublesome to wear a kimono...u need someone there to assist u when putting it on.
Not to mention that it's heavy and movement restrictive.
Summer kimonos are different though.
It's easier to wear and made from lighter materials such as cotton so it feels less stifling.
The price for a summer kimono is cheaper too as most of them are sold ready to wear.
Anyway a lot of Japanese guys think that gals look really cute when dressed in a kimono.
