Of course you have to see the whole series or read the mangas first. The OVA's were events leading the person we know him as in the tv Series and the Seisiouhens (sp?) is the conclusion to his saga. Really sad since you see this great character beat down by a real to life disease. Not to mention the distant relationship he shared with Kaoru. I have never watched an anime that was so based on emotions before. There was no fighting scenes (except for flashbacks) and they were only portrayed to show his qualities and mannerisms.
Then there's the facial features that were drawn. Pure magic. Whoever the artist is he does very good work. Especially that part where Sano throws Kenshin the fish and it just drops to the ground. The way Sano's eyes just sink is friggin' incredible for an anime. Anybody know what other works this artist did?

Over-rated.
The saddest anime ever? Fruits Basket has some amazingly sad parts to it and there is a certain element of melancholy all the way through if you pay attention. Otherwise, I'd recommend Cowboy Bebop for certain episodes.
Those are the only ones that have moved me in such a way really.

imo, every anime series has sad parts in them. i haven't watched any anime in a while but i remember Naruto was sad.....when they were chasing Sasuke and every good guy was dying. it would show their life stories and stuff before they "die".

Grave of the Fireflies is supposed to be sad, but like others here I wasn't moved by it... maybe because it was too easy to see what the director was trying to do.
