Its not just crooked teeth its also the green discolorization and alot of them do have bad breath too. I was told that the japanese water system doesn't have any floride, that might be a reason. The whole time I've been in japan I might have seen 2 or 3 dental office total.

well dental care is really expensive in japan. and its not as stressed as western countries

As the National Geographics article in the first post says, as the jaw becomes reduced so fast and while the teeth do not, you get overcrowding and bad teeth. The initial post was no bull$hit pseudo-scientific post as some may imply. The pics were extreme cases to make a point.

I notice that Japanese children hardly have braces to correct their teeth. That's why it seems to be more common amongst Japanese.

Not all of them have bad teeth, ....but a good handful of the exchange students I've come across (not to mention my ex-GF) had blackish-colored teeth.

I think the Japanese culture seem to think that this is beautiful...something different from the western culture. The western culture is sooo opposite,....use Crest Whitening strips, teeth bleachin...etc. (I wouldn't talk because I use Crest White Strips these days).

This is why I didn't dare ever!....kiss my ex-GF. However, she had a sweet personality.

On another note,...I've noticed that Vietnamese girls also tend to have blackish and crooked teeth. Doesn't anybody here also notice that?

No, japanese people do not think it´s beautiful, because I have not seen one popular japanese actor, actress, model with crooked or bad teeth. all have straight and white teeth.

I think americans really care for the whiteness of their teeth.

Here in Holland most people do not care about the color of their teeth.

Bleaching the teeth comes from the US, isn´t it.

i think asian from asia are more subtle looking and asian-like whereas asian americans are more hawaii like kind of look and darker i think asians in asia look more comfortable

most east-asians have bad teeth full stop. i've seen HK girls in dire need of dentury work, really bad stuff. j@p girls with canine teeth pointing out, looks very odd. Koreans with similar problems too.

I've never got anything done with my teeth, except the regular check-ups. And the dentist said my teeth were quite good, straight, nice size and all.
Only it's a bit yellow, I should stop drinking some much coffee. But I will never give up my tea.

i lived in korea. everyone gets their teeth done there. have you been to korea? bad teeth has never been associated with koreans. my teeth and my family's are natural. the evidence for the japanese had to do with their jaws. however not really so with koreans

The teeth thing seems to be a problem for all east Asians, at least that's how it seems for family and friends of all types. Only the ones with money are able to do things. My sister and I needed braces when we were younger. *shrug* I knew lots of people who also did.
