Would you consider an om tattoo sacreligous? I have one on my left peck and I admit I only got it cause it looks badass. I also have one of those circular Kali type symbols on my back, just something cool and sexy about it. I think my parents would flip out if they ever saw them, but don't know if it's them just possibly being uptight or if it's actually because it's unholy to do such things. Any other Indian people have any opinions on the matter?

P.S. I might have spelled sacreligous wrong, but OH WELL!! =P

I think if ur hindu, or an indian derived religion its ok. Also, most ppl don't know this but saying Om means you are basically affirming the hindu, buddhist, or jain faith and renouncing your religion.

Simply put saying OM is like saying Jesus is the only true god.

what kali type symbols? the symbols of kali i see are of her standing on shiva? with her tongue out and holding skulls..
jiggyiggy
hmm maybe it's not Kali, damn I'm gonna have to do some research to find the name.
jiggyiggy
hmm it's a femanized version of the shiva najurat or however it's spelled. It has four arms like Kali though! =P

I have to agree it is, especially for your reasons. The reasons you did it for is basically what others do such as "Copying" it just because it looks good. Lots of people do this with Maori face tattoos and it is one of the worst ways you could disrespect them by stealing something that is personalized per individual and plus you have no idea of the culture and just get it because, as you put it, looks "badass". But at the same time this is what you are, so it's not necessarily in the same area, but still you should have gotten it for other personal reasons IMO. If it is just to show off, I believe it is sacriligeous. If it is to make you feel more complete or to feel intune with your faith, then I would think that is a better motive.

My mother and father have ohm tattoos on their arm. I think they took it after
they got married. And they did it the old school style, so it had to hurt like hell icon_confused.gif
Im thinking about getting a tiny Ohm as well... on my right shoulder or something..

Get one on your left peck! It'll look badass, especially when you're at the beach! Trust me =D

I dunno I'm just biased against tattoos on the arms for some reason, heh. I'm thinking about getting something done on either my right ankle or calf since I wear chunpels/ flip-flops and shorts a lot. I can't decide what to get though.

Oh btw yes Karma the basic concept does look like that, I think making that exact design would be pretty hard for a tattoo artist though, dunno. The design I got was from a friend's magazine that had a bunch of tattoo concept art or whatever you wanna call it. I might get a digital camera soon, so I might post a pic of it.

I've seen on a travel show this white lady getting an OM painted on her forehead by an Indian guy. And you can guess that she did it just for the heck of it, not for a religious reason. There were lots of people around and they didn't seem to mind that she was doing if for aesthetic reasons. So I guess it would be ok.

I also have an OM on my arm, but I regret it! I feel kind of guilty, since I'm not religious to the fullest, and I also can't wear tank tops at work. icon_wink.gif But, I am proud that my religious background is Hindu, even though I don't follow all the "rules"/recommendations. icon_redface.gif So, it does let other Desis know that my roots are Hindu.

My parents were okay with it, and all of the aunties and uncles commend me on it. The only people that didn't like it were a coupe of my guy acquaintances, b/c they think Indian girls shouldn't have tattoos. icon_redface.gif

icon_redface.gif

the word itself looks stupid when spelled correctly, but oh well. for some reason i associate the word with 'religious' so it looks wrong to me. lol.

Is it true that Poppy Montgomery has an OM tattoo on the small of her back?
