In the 19th century, many Korean immigrants migrated en masse from the Korea Peninsula to China. After the foundation of the Republic of China, a second wave arrived. The population increase is caused by Japanese invasion in that region. The Japanese were trying to use Korean immigration to diffuse the staying power of Chinese in that region. After the end of World War II, many Koreans in China did not go back to Korea, even though their country has been granted independence. Instead, they joined the Chinese Civil War and were mobilized by communist leader Mao Zedong to fight against the Chinese Nationalist army. As a reward for their involvement, the Communist Party gave Koreans their own autonomous prefecture inside China and divided the land of Han Chinese among the cooperating Koreans.

Yanbian_Korean_Autonomous_Prefecture

This korean ethnic group is one of the 56 officially recognized ethnic groups in China.
It is also one of China's wealthiest minorities. The city of Yanji is quite impressive.

Many Koreans fought in the Chinese armies during the war. Most of them fought for the Chinese Communists and so they were rewarded after the war.

A korean composed the chinese red army anthem.

Cui Jian, the father of Chinese rock'n roll is an ethnic Korean. His grandfather fought in the chinese red army.

^the chinese communist party was overflowing with koreans, and up to 80 percent of the chinese communist insurgents in manchuria were actually korean. The korean state of choson was swallowed by j@p imperialists without a fight, but koreans nevertheless fought on militia scale and continued to fight throught world war 2 as part of the chinese communists. Practically manchuria was defended by koreans, and later chiang kai-shek was defeated by armies that had millions of koreans. THese same koreans would found north korea and later fight americans in the korean war. The reason why chinese helped north korea was to pay the north koreans back for their highly honorable feats in china.

and the chinese communist party wasn't overflowing with koreans. there were just a few groups of koreans, that's all.

I think it was a figure of speech. Anyways, there are more than two million ethnic-Koreans in China today.

To my knowledge, North Korea gave a lot of assistance in Manchuria when the CCP was pinned up there.

A lot of the Koreans in the Chinese Nationalist Army are also veterans in the North Korean army. The irony is while they helped establish communist governments in both China and North Korea, their grandchildren identify themselves more South Koreans and help smuggle refugees out of North Korea.

im very proud of the koreans in china. theyve accomplished a lot and have earned a name for themselves. it's always nice to visit yanbian and surrounding jilin and liaoning; there's a korean presence wherever you go.
