MiniDisc Goes the Way of Vinyl?

After years of struggling to gain popularity, and despite a strong following of a small group of dedicated consumers, it looks like Sony's MiniDisc format is about to be extinct. The MD has certainly been a worthwhile format, but in light of restructuring at Sony, it looks like it's going to be the little format the couldn't.

From Real Tech News:

Our Take: Sony Restructure + New Focus = No Mini Disc. I know MD nuts who will literally cry at the news, but this looks like a category that just never caught on the way Sony imagined.

Personally, I can say that I did once own a MD player, and while I liked it a lot (and it was very cool), the lack of widespread support for a format makes it just about impossible to want to stick with it. Better luck next time, Sony.

It's official...MD's are already discontinued in australia. sony really messed up their marketting of the minidisc along with proprietary atrac, even though its superior to mp3. ive been using the MD format since 97; sad to see it go. i know ill continue using my Hi-MD for years on end. screw ipod.

you must have an ancient md model...

today's Hi-MDs are awesome. superior PCM audio quality. even my older netMDs are great. it's been so many years since ive recorded music in real time using an optical cord.
