Abdul Karim Kororma Africans United for Taiwan (AUT) says Senegal's decision to break diplomatic ties with Taiwan is a political intrigue aimed at killing democracy in Africa, AUT's President Alimamy Bakarr Sankoh states in a public statement.
Sankoh states AUT is a non-partisan organization supporting Taiwan's right to sovereignty, national independence and self-determination.
" The authorities in Dakar played the hide- and- sick game without given prior notice to Taiwan or its mission in Dakar before toeing the line," the statement reads and alleges that China has promised to bankroll President Abdulia Wade's re-election campaign in the midst of growing popularity from the opposition.
Sankoh alleges former Senegal President, Abdoul Diouf established diplomatic ties with Taiwan in 1996 but was mooted out of the ethos to democracy, peace and human dignity.
"The AUT is deeply concerned that Senegal's decision to broker ties with Taiwan came at a time when the world is moving away from old-fashioned politics of unfocused agendas, to the direction of civilized norms and standards of behaviors," he stated and added that it is important to stress that communist China is strongly opposed to the NEPAD (New Partnership for African Development) project, and besides, has voiced out its strong opposition to the African Unions demand for Africa to have Permanent Representatives in the new UN Security Council.
"We are concerned that if Senegal which aspires to become one of Africa's Permanent Representatives in the yet to be restructured UN Security Council, can become part to communist China's hostile policies against a peaceful and democratic country, like Taiwan, then the future of the continent (with Senegal at the helm of NEPAD) is bleak," the release states.
China, the statement notes, is "hiding behind international instruments, using threat of force and intimidation in its land-grabbing policy aimed at annexing the sovereignty, national independence of Taiwan. We believe Senegal owes it a duty and responsibility to condemn such policies, and not to abet and condone activities that are detrimental to peace, democracy and human dignity. The international civilized community must be disappointed on Senegal for betrayal of trust."
