You should show the M-60A3 too. There more than 165 M-60 tanks in Royal Thai Army.
Sirikittong
The M-60A3 patton tank is quite old, and would not do good for the RTA. What we do need more would be the Stingray fast attack anti-tanks. Thai air-guard defenses is superior and basically unchallenged in south east asia; no foreign air power can survive an entry into our air space while being targetted by our air guards and to supplement that, our massive Air Force would cleave even a Singapore-sized air force from the sky if it even entered our area of control.

Enemy ground forces would be subsequentially under the mercy of the Royal Thai Air Force, which has a strength of 26 air squadrons; 3 air divisions.

this is an M-60A3; not that impressive IMO

His Majesty's Royal Guards
JediKnight
M-60A3 old but it is most advance in this region. There have no advance MBT in southeast Asia. Even Malaysia brought the T-91, but it is a few of them. The southern region terain is not good for tank war.
Sirikittong
Actually the southern region is peninsula; and amphibious attacks from sea i ideal; particularly in the isthmus of kra.

The stingry, was built for amphibious/land warefare. That is why the royal thai marines remains adamant in using them as their primary assault craft.

Please, understand, I have uncles that are officers in the RTA that talk about future RTA purchases of Stingrays.

From a Burmese source accounting for the Thai-Burmese border clash in February 2001. This proves that Thai forces will easily defeat any Southeast Asian neighbors:

The Battle at Border Post 9631

How much is the situation in Myanmar dependable on actions of country’s neighbours, but also how complex the situation in that country meanwhile is (in regards to relations between the regime, drugs, and different rebel organizations) was perfectly illustrated by a series of sharp clashes between Burma and Thailand, in February 2001.

In order to support the UWSA in its fight against the SSA, and help it establish the full control of the areas along the border to Thailand, the Myanmar Army launched an operation that was to result in the fighting with Thai military as well. While the Myanmar regime would not comment about these operations, meanwhile it is known that the fiercest series of battles was fought for the Thai Border Post 9631, mounted on a hilltop one kilometre inside Thailand, at Ban Pang Noon, in the Mae Fae Luang district, on approach to the Mae Sai, a city some 440 miles away from Bangkok, in the northernmost tip of Thailand. The exact reasons for the attack on this border post remain unclear: some Thai sources indicated that the Myanmaris attacked the Border Post 9631 – garrisoned by 20 Tahan Pran Militia troops – either “by accident”, while pursuing Shon guerrilla, or in order to get a good fire-base for their artillery attacks against the nearby Shon positions. It is interesting to note, however, that this attack came on the evening of Friday, 9 February 2001, when most of the Thai military was on a leave. In fact, the unofficial sources within the Thai Army indicated that the attack was undertaken by no less but 900 Myanmar troops and 600 UWSA militiamen, and that its objective was to remove the Thais from a position from which the Myanmaris could smuggle drugs into Thailand. In the past, namely, the local commander of the Tahan Pran was several times offered money to let their convoys with drugs pass, but he refused all such offers (in fact, he should have told the Myanmaris to, “go feed fish” with their opium).

Regardless the backgrounds, the Tahan Pran detected the approaching Myanmaris in time and put up stiff resistance, holding out for four hours, killing 14 out of some 200 Myanmari attackers, and injuring another 30, while losing two dead and eleven wounded. After almost running out of ammunition, however, they had to pull out and the Post 9631 fell into Myanmari hands. Having taken all their injured with them, the Tahan Pran were relatively easy to pursue by the enemy, and a short running engagement developed until the 3rd Cavalry Regiment of the Thai 1st Armoured Division started a rescue effort. Having the Post 9631 in their hands, the Myanmaris actually needed no more fighting, but their intention was to use the post and the surviving Tahan Prans as a bait for a trap they attempted to set up for any intervening Thai unit. As the Tahan Pran held out longer than anticipated, however, their plan was spoiled, as instead of deploying their troops on the flanks on the main threat route, the Myanmaris were forced to involve their reservers in the fighting.

On 10 February, the Thai 3rd Cavalry Regiment assembled a battalion-sized task force from a part of a mechanized infantry battalion armed with M-113A-3 APCs, an infantry company and a company of M-60A-3 MBTs. The unit was put under command of Capt. Songkarn Nilphan, and instantly sent on its way. Approaching Mae Sai on the same evening, the Nilphan’s force counterattacked the Myanmaris that were still busy fighting the Tahan Prans. The Cavalry charged forward, hitting the enemy hit very hard, forcing them to retreat back towards the border, leaving 17 dead and 60 injured behind. The Thais had only seven wounded.

On the morning of 11 February, the Myanmar Army responded in strength, deploying three regiments supported by Chinese-supplied T-69 tanks and artillery into an attack against Mae Sae, the local military Headquarters, and the adjacent satellite communications site. The Thais first concentrated on repulsing the main column, engaging T-69s with their M-60A3s, and subsequently by RTAF F-5s, which flew several strikes armed with LGBs, after starting from the Chiang Mai AB. Later on Sunday, Thai forces were reinforced by some self-propelled artillery (M-109s) and several batteries of even more powerful guns, including some GCN-55s, and the remaining two Myanmar columns were stopped as well, after suffering some heavy losses in dead, injured and captured soldiers. While the whole 3rd Thai Army was mobilizing and deploying reinforcements towards Mae Sai, the RTAF continued mounting intensive strikes, hitting Myanmar positions and supply columns. Late on Sunday afternoon, the final counter-attack by Thai troops drove Myanmaris out of Thailand, re-capturing the Border Post 9631. There an injured Tahan Pran officer - previously assumed dead - was found alive.

Meanwhile, the fighting between Thai and Myanmari forces was reported also from a hill some two miles west of the city of Thachilek, which is separated by a canal from Mae Sai. Also, a RTAF UH-1H helicopter underway on a supply mission over Mae Aye was damaged by gunfire from the ground and forced to land. The crew was not injured.

At 19:30h local time, a cease-fire was agreed. This was generally accepted, but sporadic fighting continued as the Myanmaris were bringing in 2.000 fresh troops from Kengtung to Tachilek, together with some heavy weapons. Especially the artillery was involved in the sense of duels over the border and some additional strikes by RTAF aircraft. The RTAF Chian Mai AB was the main base for all Thai air operations during this battle, and the Royal Thai Air Force units deployed there proved highly successful in operations against Myanmar. RTAF fighters have flown up to 70 combat sorties between 10 and 12 February, including a LGB-strike against a Myanmar artillery battery placed on the Golf course at Thachilek. This mission was flown by one F-5F and three F-5Es. The F-5F was equipped with the Israeli Litening nav/attack and designation pod: the WSO in the F-5F designated the target, while his pilot tried to fly steady – while remaining out of range of air defences. The three F-5Es closed from different sides at a high speed and tossed two six 2.000pds Paveway LGBs each into the acquisition basket before disappearing the other way. The Myanmar anti-aircraft fire was reported as "light", and none of Thai aircraft was hit or damaged. According to Thai sources, except for at least a dozen of Myanmar troops, at least five civilians were killed and ten injured during this attack as well.

The fight stop because the new Prime Minister (Thaksin) did not want it (He was into office only a fews day). The conflict started by some soldier themself. It was not the government policy. They can not use overall armmed forces. They can not use the elite force or others force. But the conflicted kill many high level officers (colonel) of Myanmar Army.

PM Thaksin commented to the military "Don't over react" and he stop others operation at all.

Some belived there was some secret agreement between US and Thai generals to attack into Shan state and destroy the narcotic field and some Myanmar military base. At that moment there was some American troops in the area for join traning in Cobra gold. If the PM did not step into and control the conflict. May be you will see the mini war in Shan state.

They planned to used 1-2 division to operated in this operation.

However, the Thai Public didn't want this war. It was not make any our benefit at all. Even we had a problem with drug from that region but the problem can be use the other means to handle it. War is not the anwer.

It's very expensive to maintain an aircraft carrier, not to mention have it sailing it around for no reason.

It's remained largely inactive after the 97 financial crisis hit Thailand, and it's rarely seen operational nowadays.
Mogembo..
India (AFP) - India is ready to host its first major regional naval exercises since the tsunami disaster at the end of 2004, military officials said.

"We want to show them our capabilities," Indian naval chief Admiral Arun Prakash said of the January 9-14 event, which will include ships from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

India will deploy two of its latest guided missile-carrying corvettes and other assault ships while Indonesia, Malaysia and Myanmar will send two warships each and the remaining four navies will field one, officials said.

Australia also plans to send a delegation to the event, which will involve "limited wargames" off the Andaman and Nicobar island chain, said lieutenant general Aditya Singh, India's chief military commander of the archipelago.

The event "will allow us closer military exchanges with navies of these nations as well as lead to interaction across a wider canvas than just exercises," he said on Monday.

It is the fifth such naval exercise in India's maritime zone since 1995.

India called off the exercises in 2004 and instead rushed 25 of its warships and 5,000 military personnel to help 50,000 islanders after the tsunami crashed into the archipelago's 36 inhabited islands.

"It was the biggest-ever peacetime operation conducted by us and we would be proud to share our experience," Prakash told reporters in the remote island of Car Nicobar, where the tsunami wrecked India's most strategic airbase in the Indian Ocean.

The exercises "will exhibit the speed with which we sprung back into action in these strategic waters after the tsunami," said a top naval officer who asked not to be named.

India Navy spokesman Vinay Garg said the six-day event would also involve strategy sessions.

Experts from the nine nations would discuss subjects such as the marine environment and anti-piracy measures in the Andaman Sea, which is one of the world's busiest maritime energy transportation lanes, Garg said.

"Discussions on multinational patrols of exclusive economic zones and disaster relief are also on the agenda," he said.

The Indian navy on November 24 wrapped up week-long wargames held jointly with the airforce and army.

Thank you. I must say I am somewhat impressed with the Vietnamese Military; it needs some improvement, in my opinion. Nice pictures by the way. I notice that your navy relies soley on coastal craft (ie. patrol boats), vietnam needs to modernize its naval arm, as its northern neighbour is a powerful naval power already. Just my opinion.

^I share the same opinion, last year VietNam signed a deal with Russia for 4 Gepard Project 11661 frigates, 2 will be delivered from Russia and the other 2 will be constructed in VietNam. And VietNam is also stepping up the construction of more logistic and combat ships in local shipyards. So VietNam steadily building up its naval arm. Does Thailand build ships btw?

Thailand, has a growing manufacturing arm, we already have the 4th largest automobile industry in the world, production wise.

As for ship building, its a growing one:

Unithai Shipyard signs a shipbuilding contract - for a 150 TEU containership

Recently, Unithai Shipyard and Engineering Ltd has signed a shipbuilding contract with NP Marine Co for a 150 TEU Lloyds Containership. The construction of this new vessel is scheduled for completion and delivery in 14 months. The vessel is designed to serve Thailand's coastal trade.

Unithai Shipyard and Engineering Ltd, owns and operates the largest shipyard in Thailand. The shipyard has fully equipped workshops with two floating-drydocks that are capable of operating a complete range of ship repairs, modifications and conversion services for vessels up to 140,000dwt, and shipbuilding for vessels up to 150 metres in length. An experienced team of multinational managers leads a labour force of nearly 2,000 people.

NP Marine Co Ltd, part of the SC Group of Companies, owns and operates a fleet of 37 tug boats, and provides logistics support for the petrochemical industry and marine business in Thailand.

easures to Help Thailand’s Shipbuilding Industry (24/01/2005)
Good prospects are seen for the shipbuilding industry in Thailand, as the Cabinet on January 18 approved a package of measures to help this industry. The measures, proposed by the Ministry of Industry, also cover ship repairs.

According to a report submitted to the Cabinet, the Ministry of Industry has worked out strategies for the shipbuilding and repair industry with related public and private organizations. The strategies involve the promotion of the shipbuilding and repair industry, amendments to related laws and regulations, and efficient management.

In order to promote and support the shipbuilding and repair industry on an immediate basis, the Marine Department has proposed the establishment of a shipbuilding industrial estate within the next five years. A suitable site is being sought for the location of this industrial estate. At the same time, the existing ports will be improved to facilitate marine transport, especially the transportation of goods in coastal areas. More ports in the regional areas of the country will be built to reduce road transport while boosting marine transport. The move will help save energy, which is becoming more and more expensive.

Under long-term measures to be implemented from five to ten years, a fund for shipbuilding and repair industrial development will be set up. A study will be conducted to find out the demand of manpower in this industry. In a move to produce more personnel in the shipbuilding industry, incentives will be offered to encourage more researchers to work for shipbuilding and repairs in response to the needs of shipyards.

An institute will be established to upgrade skills in shipbuilding and repairs to international standards. Related industries, such as raw material and equipment production and iron manufacturing, will be promoted to encourage foreign shipbuilders to undertake joint ventures with Thai entrepreneurs.

Regarding amendments to related laws and regulations, the Government will exempt import tariffs for machinery, raw materials, and equipment used in the shipbuilding and repair industry. Promotional privileges, together with an exemption of corporate tax, will be granted to this industry in all investment promotion zones. Software technology and modern management systems will be adopted to develop the production process in shipyards.

Concerning efficient management, the Government will form a directing committee to supervise and facilitate the shipbuilding and repair industry. The committee will promote cooperation with various countries in several areas, such as technology, expertise, personnel development, and the promotion of research and development in this field.

In addition, a database for the shipbuilding and repair industry will be worked out. The database will also include information about related businesses, and the information must be complete and updated. The Cabinet assigned various agencies involved to translate these strategies for helping the shipbuilding industry into action.

Where are your sources that state that we are 15th in rank?

Thailand is often referred to in recent years as the “Detroit of Asia”. Automobile, motorbike, auto and motorcycle spare parts and items for the after sale auto market are made by numerous factories throughout Thailand. In fact, the Auto Industry is the number one manufacturing industry in Thailand in terms of value, followed by Hard Disk Drive manufacture. Increasingly the Thai government’s policy of early promotion of the Auto Industry and then recent acceleration of trade preferences under the Asia Free Trade Area (AFTA), FTAs with Australia, India and pending FTA’s with China and the U.S. are creating even more favorable conditions in which the economies of scale and efficiencies of the Thai Auto and parts industry are magnifying Thailand’s advantages in this area. April was an active month in Thailand for the Auto market. Here are some of the developments as reported by the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI) and other newspaper sources from throughout the region:

During the “Prime Minister Meets the Press” session, PM Thaksin said Thialand can easily produce more than 1,000,000 cars per year. Thailand has been ranked fourth in the highest car production. Moreover, the premier said that he will boost vehicle production to reach 1,800,000 cars per year, forecasting that Thailand will gain 400,000 million baht per year from car exports.

Audi to Establish Production Base in Thailand

BANGKOK, May 14 (Xinhuanet) -- Famous German car maker Audi will use Thailand as its production base for export market in the region. Audi AG's managing director for the Asian Pacific region Jorg Hofmann met Industry Minister Pinij Jarusombat here Thursday, stating the company's aim to invest in a Thai plant owned by its local partner, the Yontrakit Group, the Thai News Agency reported Friday.  Being a luxury car unit of the Volkswagen Group, the company plans to produce 7,000-8,000 Audi A4 and A6 models per year.

Deputy Industry Ministry Vachara Phanchet was quoted by the agency as saying that Audi chose Thailand to be the second production base in Asia after China due to the Thai government's policy on turning the kingdom into "Detroit of Asia".  It hoped to be granted tax privileges by the Board of Investment of Thailand (BOI), and to be benefited from free trade deals signed by Thailand and other countries.

He said the top car maker would be allowed to pay only zero to five import tax under the ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (AFTA) when it uses 40 percent auto parts produced in the 10-nation group.      The company, however, said it couldn't use 40 percent of local auto parts in the first two years.  Sales of Audi cars produced in Thailand reach 500-700 units monthly. Each car is roughly worth two-three million baht, which is comparable to that of the top-classed Mercedes Benz and BMW, the agency said.

Thailand promoting itself as the Detroit of Asia

According to Ewan Kennedy in an article in the 16 May 2004 Canberra Times:

Last year close to 60,000 Thai vehicles were sold in Australia, with even more expected this year.
Thailand is much more than a vehicle assembler. Many of the vehicle parts are manufactured there, including major body pressings.
Utes are currently the big thing in Thailand, with most of the major players on the Australian market importing products from there. Toyota, Holden, Ford and Mitsubishi all bring in utes, as does Mazda. Nissan sourced its Navaras from there for a while, though its currently bringing them in from Japan.  It's not just utes, though. Holden Zafira is built in Thailand, as are some Honda Accord and Civic models.
Quality is generally as high as that of vehicles built in other countries, with the Japanese makers keeping a tight reign on quality control.  Australian engineering expertise has been used by the Thai vehicle industry in many important areas. This is happening either by an exchange of engineers between auto makers in the two countries, or by enterprising Aussies working on a freelance basis.
No prestige makes are imported to Australia from Thailand at this stage and that's likely to be the case for some time to come. However, such major players as BMW and Mercedes-Benz do have Thai-built cars.

Actually the site that you provide is outdated; showing 2003-2004 statistical data; this data is poorly outdated as there have been massive automobile planned projects and updates during the 2004-2005 fiscal year; much happens in terms of economics in the span of 2-3 years. Besides, the data that I saw during the 2004 figures was that Thailand's production of motor vehicles/parts was at 927,981 with an exchange rate of 25%; only suprassed by China, Japan, India and South Korea. Our proudction was higher than that of individual states such as Indonesia, iran, malaysia, pakistan, the philippines, staiwan, australia and vietnam on your cited data table.
http://www.oica.net/htdocs/Main.htm

As for fastest growing economies; that is evident, but our automobile sector is the 4th fastest growing ones in the entire world automobile industry. Quite frankly Im not satisfied; I want to surpass some countries. And it looks like Thailand will; considering our production rates in this sector is larger than the combined proudction of the philippines, taiwan and malaysia.

Quite so, sales in Ford automobiles have decreased in the wave of increased gas prices, most of these facilities ford operates overseas once made large s.u.vs considering the drop in suv purchases, the company had to alleviate the production cost. I know that ford had to make some cuts in some of the automobile plants in thailand.

UNIFORMS AND THE HISTORY OF THE ROYAL THAI BORDER GUARD

pecial Operations Unit "Naraesuan 261" was set up in 1983, Buddhist year 2526, by a Thai Cabinet Resolution. The Resolution, dated February 1, 2526 (1983), was a major policy decision designed to provide a force for counter-terrorism efforts.

The Royal Thai Police were given orders to setup traning for a special division to accomplish these goals. The unit was founded in 1984, Buddhist year 2527, and placed under the control and responsibility of the Thai Border Patrol Police's Aerial Reinforcement Unit or PARU.

In late 1986, a Royal Decree, proclamation number 14, reorganzied the Royal Thai Police and Naraesuan 261 was assigned as 4th company under the Border Patrol Police's Aerial Reinforcement Unit (PARU).

Special Operations Unit "Naraesuan 261" has the responsibility of counter-terrorism and resulting criminal cases. The company also plays an important role as executive protection for His Majesty the King, Her Majesty the Queen and other members of the Royal Family when they travel around Thailand. Furthermore, the company acts as escorts for other foreign dignitaries and heads of state visiting Thailand.

nitial training was performed by members of the Royal Thai Police Department. Teams are divided up into units of 5 people following the model set up by Germany's GSG-9. Teams are trained in military tactics, sniping, waterborne operations, martial arts, and operation of a variety of vehicles.

After initial traning, groups pass on their experiences to other members of the Special Operations Company. The Company will also assign members to train in foreign countries and bring the knowledge back to Thailand to further help train the Company. Standard traning is broken up into five parts:

1. International counter-terrorism training consisting of 24 weeks of training for new Police privates.

2. International counter-terrorism training consisting of 6 weeks of training for Police who are now in active service as well as one week of anti-terrorism planning.

3. Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) training consisting of 12 weeks of training.

4. Sniper/counter-sniper training consisting of 4 weeks of training for those assigned to sniper positions.

5. Electronics proficiency training consisting of 12 weeks of training for those assigned to the duty of Electronics Proficiency Officer.

The Company also takes part in cross-training with Special Operations divisions of the Royal Thai Military as well as training with their counterparts in various units in the United States, Australia, and Germany.

Special Company 'Naresuan 261' has cooperant escort duty for His Majesty the King, Her Majesty the Queen, and other members of the Royal Family when they travel around Thailand. They also train female members as an executive escort for Her Royal Highness Princess Siridhorn when she visits Border Patrol Police schools around Thailand.

The company has been involved in a number of high profile criminal cases including:

1. Burmese student takeover of the Myanmar embassy in Bangkok on October 1-2, 1999 (2542).

2. Takeover of the Rachabui Hospital in Rachabui Province on January 24-25, 2000 (2543).

3. Release of hostages from the Karen-Burmese rebellion at Samutsakorn Province Prison on November 22-23, 2000 (2543).

These three major successful operations were all under the control of Special Company 'Naresuan 261'. In all these situations, the mission was accomplished and the hostages were saved.

At present the Special Operation 'Naresuan 261' company is now developing additional tactics and has the support of the Royal Thai Police to provide them with the weapons they need to perform their work with efficiency.
