Yes.

Vietnamese are culturally east asians; very confucian.

However, ethnically speaking. The country of vietnam is a melting pot of different ethnc groups be it cham, khmer krom, tai ethnics (thai/lao people), kinh, ethnic chinese, ameriasians etc.

1. ethnically speaking Vietnam (the country) has many ethnics, and DON'T mix them up. Khmers and Cham are two ethnics in Vietnam but none of them are related to we Viet. Dai Viet expanded south and conquered Champa and part of Khmer empire. That's all.

QUOTE
Vietnamese Kinh are an austroloid/mongoloid people; and are the result of the intermixing of mongolic people and the previous austronesiatic negritos of the region.

blah blah you are going back too far. all human came from Africa embarassedlaugh.gif And the Mongoloid originated in SE Asia then migrated North rather than originated in the North and migrated south embarassedlaugh.gif

The ancestors of ethnic Viet/Kinh are what the Chinese people called Yue. Vietnam in Chinese is Yue Nan (Viet = Yue) THE END

Oooh...., have you ever read or heard about Kidung Sundayana...?
It's telling the story about Perang Bubat...

For detail just click:
Kidung Sunda

My illustration is part of my unfinished comic book (manga style) about this tragic romance between Sundanese Princess and Majapahit Emperor.
I read this story during history lesson in my Junior Hi, it was the only history article that really make me cry. icon_redface.gif
Since then I develop fondness of ancient Indonesian history, especially during Hindu-Buddhist era. To be precise Majapahit and Sunda Galuh-Pajajaran era.

About my signature; on the left is Princess Dyah Pitaloka, holding kujang blade ready to commit suicide. She's in despair, heartbroken, witnessing her father and mother and entire Sunda courtiers being slaugthered in Bubat Square by Majapahit imperial guards. On the center there was Emperor Hayam Wuruk, feeling guilty, sad and heartbroken, remembering the Princess dead body lying lifeless on the square. Actually the emperor already fallen in love with the Princess. Fading in the center is the face of Gajah Mada, Majapahit Greatest and ambitious Prime Minister. The far right is the gate of Majapahit Imperial Palace. Hope you enjoy it.... icon_wink.gif

Interesting about Majapahit.

Can you please tell us more about the Majapahit Empire?? You really struck my curiousity. Thanks khun maja
Bhaskara
Actually, I've heard of it!And I just love that story. I live in Bandung, and although not a sundanese, I am proud of West Java's history. It's great to know about your project. You already have a publisher for it?Please let me know if your project is about to be released, okay! It's always a pleasure to know a fellow artist who cares about our history just like you!I myself am interested in making story about the Empress of Majapahit's golden era; Tribhuwana Wijaya Tunggadewi. But let's save our discussion for later, okay...sorry if I'm babbling, Sirikittong...

Hmm..I think Majapahitan knows more about this thing, but I'll try my best. Majapahit was a Java-based Hindu Empire in the 1200s. At its golden age, it dominated Malay Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, Bali, and the Philippines.

Majapahit greatest achievement was when it subjugated the great Srivijaya Kingdom.

Oh, if I'm not mistaken, Majapahit is a role model for religious tolerance in Indonesia, because although it was a hindu empire, buddhist was also thriving. In fact, Empress Tribhuwana's mother was a buddhist nun (the reason why she refuse the throne and gave it to her daughter, Tribhuwana, instead).

That's it for now. I'm sorry if it's boring, telling stories is not exactly my best skill icon_redface.gif

Interesting. How did Indonesia become muslim when for a great time of its history---its empires were hindu, and buddhist?

Why did it spread so fast??

Thank you for your explanation, btw. icon_wink.gif

-Ack!- Your question makes me feel like I was in High School again, in my history class. Okay then, I'll try to explain.

As trades grow prosper in Indonesia, there are a lot of traders from around the world. Arab and Indian traders first brought Islam to Indonesia in the late 12th century, establishing settlements in the Aceh region. It spread across the Indonesian archipelago, following trade routes. Rather than a violent conquest, it was peacefully laid over and mixed with existing cultural (and even religious) influences to form what is still the predominant form of Islam in Indonesia today, particularly in Java.

Although muslims, Indonesians still hold onto the old traditions of Hindu and Buddha. Nowadays, however, new generation of muslim thinks this kind of attitude of mixing tradition (hindu/buddhist) with Islam is some sort of blasphemy to the purity of the teaching of Islam.

One example of this would be the preaching through the arts. These parts explains why Islam prosper in the coastal region. People like the Minang and the Malay who lives in the coastal have strong tradition of Islam since a long time ago.

As for the rest of Indonesia (like the Javanese people who have strong hindu and buddhist tradition), the most simple explanation is; when the ruler convert to a religion, the people usually do the same thing.

That is what I got from school, anyway. Maybe Majapahit or other Indonesians could explain better icon_redface.gif

hmm, many of the ones posted in here aren't traditional vietnamese dances but ethnic minority dances icon_confused.gif

these 3 are authentic and traditional ethnic viet dances, two held at royal settings and one at a famous festival:

I think most Indonesians are unfamiliar with dances from Irian Jaya(compared to other Indonesian dances). Although I saw a bunch of young West Papuans performing several of their dances in the embassy and they were awesome!! I've been looking for photos of their dances but couldn't find...., maybe someone else couldl...

Majapahit has submitted a dance from Irian on the 1st page, and I've submitted my illustration on dance from West Papua, right?
Here's a dance from Irian Jaya (now separated into several Provinces of Papuas):
IPB Image
The girl is so cute!I've never seen a cute papuan girl like that in the place where I live now, always the less-prettier ones (I'm trying to be polite and decent here, not using the "u**y" word).:P
Anyway, most of the dances from the Papuas are tribal dances, used in traditional ceremonies. Like "Tari Perang", the dance of war. U won't see this outside their own villages. The least u can see is newer dances like "Tari Selamat Datang" or "Tari Cendrawasih", if u're an honored guest visiting the capitals such as Jayapura. But I think it lacks the genuinity...
