Indonesia is the world's most populouse Islamic nation and very powerful in its region. Is there any kind of dances that represent the Islamic culture?

As lemongrass said, we're the country with the biggest muslim population in the world icon_wink.gif
I'll try to find Islamic dances of Indonesia later...

Thai and Bali dances are very beautiful and unique.
Bhaskara
Thx, STFU!Bali is Indonesia's pride and joy.
Anyway, here's the Islamic dance from Indonesia as I promised. I think Saman Dance from Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province is the best representation of Islamic dance from Indonesia. The Saman dancers are dancing while chanting greetings of peace (Salaam).

embarassedlaugh.gif Yeah...
About a millenia ago... most of Indonesian ancestors are Buddhist (Shailendra, Srivijaya, Singhasari), and Hindu (Tarumanagara, Mataram, Kediri, Singhasari, Majapahit, Pajajaran). Since the fall of Majapahit empire Islam become the major religion in the archipelago.

Yes... Indonesia have the largest Islamic population, but we not a stricly Islamic state. In some province non-Islam religions are the majority. In Bali Hinduism is predominant. In East Nusa Tenggara, Roman Catholic church rule. While in North Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua Christianity is the majority. Buddhism still have significant followers in Indonesia.

Bali. I remember snapple had a drink called baliblast, and they pulled the product line out after the bombings. good drink though..

Isn't this nice, goomba? We learn new things here from AF. So now u know what to answer when people ask u what is the most populous Muslim nation in the world. Not in the Middle East, not in Africa, but right here in our own South East Asia biggrin.gif

The truth is, whatever religion an Indonesian has (Christian, Muslim, etc), we're still proud of our Hindu and Buddhism heritage icon_wink.gif

hijab is only worn by muslim women & its usually acehnese & a few javanese women that do that. in the world of islam, indonesia is considered moderate. and not all of indonesia is muslim. flores, muluku, & irian jaya are mostly catholic while parts of java, lombok, and all of bali is mostly hindu.

I am presently working in the US. I very much like to visit Indonesia and blend in with the locals because I look like one. However I only have 30 days off this year to go get married in Thailand. In the future, I will look you up and visit those Buddhist Temples. So far the closest I have been to Indonesian/Malay culture was in Singapore, at Galang Street Bizzare. I hope you have been there. our peacock dance is inspired by the kola people (burmese minority). it is a dance that is originally from burma and northern thailand (lanna).

i think the butterfly dance is a somewhat new dance craated recently.

Dude, where did you learn that from? I'm not denying the influence. I'm just curious because it's just strange how someone like you, and plz take no offence, who is not so in-tuned with Khmer culture is able to know that.

Technically that Pailin peacock dance is not from Burma. Their costumes actually look different. The Pailin peacock dance uses costumes which have strong Khmer flairs to it, if you will. If you go to Burma or Lanna, it actually looks very different. But it does have Burmese influence, it's not even a traditional dance in the sense that it was performed by the people. It is a national dance that created to show how the Kola people are like, how they dress and stuff.

yeah. i just took pics of everything. im worse than a japanese tourist. i snap away like crazy & sometimes it annoys people. lolz!

Bhaskara
Thx Najjiah, but the "Tari Merak" dancers not wearing Javanese head ornaments. It's Sundanese head ornaments. Living in the western part of Java Island, they are the neighbor of the Javanese people, and although their culture is very influenced by the Javanese, they are very proud of themselves. U see the building behind the girl in the 3rd pic? It's the Kraton Cirebon, the palace of West Java.

Dear Bhaskara,
There will be a wedding in Thailand but it will be a Khmer Wedding. I am Khmer who are from Thailand, who have been there before Siam or Thailand have ever existed. It is very difficult to tell which culture is Thai/Siam or Khmer; the only thing that we are different is that the spoken lagnuage is a bit different.
There will be lots of pictures to share with our friends. Thanks for asking.

Why did u ask, Goomby?Maybe it's because male dancers are viewed as "feminine" in ur country?I'm just guessing. Because it's like that in most part of Indonesia.

The truth is, for the Balinese, they live in art. The Balinese children learn to dance in a very young age, both girls and boys. Right after they came home from school, they'd go to the dance school with other children.

I think I've seen that costume before from Discovery Channel. It's a real pain in the as to wear that kind of make up, it take hours!U gotta give it to the Indian dancers icon_wink.gif
Goombaking209
well i asked cause some khmer apsara dancers are actual female portraying males dancers (mom said it those warriors in green wielding swords are suppose playing as men) . my mom says actual men take part as the monkey man. however this here are men performers - which makes me question

scroll down to the seventh pix
http://mongkol.wordpress.com/2006/11/21/th...d-culture-expo/

btw i dont think wearing makeup is feminine -- the US is very hypocrite lol it's not okay for everyday men to wear makeup, but it's totally acceptable for a celeberty to wear 2 lbs of makeup for any occasion crazy.gif .. lol
Bhaskara
Oh, those are indeed men. And the costumes they are wearing is really interesting. I wish I could take a closer look. I want to have a closer look at the King, too.
Hey, can u answer my question goomby? How old is the Apsara dance?
