Reed-pipe is also called Kong Ming pipe. Legend has it that Kong Ming (formally named Zhuge Liang) taught Miao people to make the reed pipes. Zhuge Liang was recognized as the greatest statesman and strategist during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280).

Reed-pipe festival is one of the most important traditional festivals to Miao ethnic minority. When the day comes, people blow reed pipes and perform reed-pipe dance in gala dress to celebrate reed-pipe festival.

Kaili International Reed-Pipe Festival has been held every year since 1999. Tourists can not only enjoy joyous reed-pipe dance during the festival but also have more understanding of Miao ethnic minority.
