Fancied RP booters debut vs. Thais

Game Wednesday (Panaad Complex)
4:30 p.m. – Philippines vs. Thailand

BACOLOD – The much-talked-about Philippine men's football team finally makes its debut in the 23rd SEA Games football competition Wednesday, taking on defending champion Thailand in a lone match at the Panaad Sports Complex here.

The Nationals expect an extremely tough challenge but promise to gut it out in a bid for an upset and set in motion their aspiration to claim a first ever medal in the biennial meet.

“Laban tayo diyan. Malakas talaga iyan, pero may panalo tayo. Kailangan lang pag-trabahuan,” said RP team coach Aris Caslib.

With Caslib keeping his team from the prying eyes of their rivals, Thai coach Chanvit Pocchivin could only guess what they would be up to in the 4:30 p.m. match.

“We're really pressured because they're the hosts and they have six (Fil-)foreign players in their lineup. We're not prepared with the foreign players because we've not done any scouting. We just knew about them when we arrived Sunday,” said Pocchivin.

However, if the RP XI has its Fil-foreign recruits led by Chelsea FC reserves James and Phil Younghusbands, the Thais boast of a pre-SEAG program that included series of exhibition matches against major leaguers Real Madrid, Everton and Bolton .

Thailand stunned Everton in a penalty shootout, barely dropped a 0-1 heartbreaker versus Bolton and bowed to Real Madrid, 0-3.

No wonder, the Thais are fancied to retain their crown here.

RP football officials, meanwhile, would rejoice winning even just the bronze medal.

For the record, the RP XI's best finish ever in the Games was fourth in Manila in 1991. The Nationals highlighted their strong performance then with an upset of then reigning champion Malaysia during the prelims.(CF)

It means that we are not making a hometown advantage like the other SEA countries in the past . They will do anything and everything to win!

biggthumpup.gif That is a good sign that the Philippines is a good host country!
sure.gif Even if they had dropped the basketball as part of the events being played in the games!
thumbsdown.gif Normally host countries introduced sports events that are advantageous for getting more medals! But looked at basketball in which the Philippines could easily get a Gold medal!

I hope they win

RP booters impress 'em
By Mike T. Limpag
Sun.Star Staff Reporter

BACOLOD City – Thailand’s goalkeeper Kosin Hathairattanakool had two brilliant stops for his team’s 1-0 win over a determined Philippine team yesterday in the 23rd Southeast Asian Games football event at the packed Panaad Park and Stadium.

Though Thailand won the match, it wasn’t the same as past encounters when the Thais won by blowouts.

This time, the Philippines, which had Chelsea reserves Philipp and James Younghusbands up front, held its own against the titleholders, taking the initiative early with Andy Prochnov’s header in the ninth minute just inches high.

The Thais showed their superiority as they kept the Philippines in the defensive in the next 20 minutes. A lapse in the RP backline left Jakkrit Bunkham open for a booming shot just outside the box in the 36th that got past Michael Casas.

“It was poor concentration on our opposite defense. We have to improve that,” RP coach Aries Caslib said.

Not satisfied

Backed by a sea of blue shirts, the RP boys took the initiative in the second half and Ali Borromeo’s header off a corner in the 47th seemed headed for a goal before it got cleared by a defender.

Another header by Borromeo in the 79th forced a diving save from Hathairanttanol just as it was to cross the bottom corner. In the next corner kick, Philip’s shot was again saved by the Thai keeper.

“Clearly, I am not satisfied because we lost, but we were just very unlucky,” Caslib said.

Thailand coach Chanvit Phalajivin praised the home boys: “The Philippines played very, very well today. They pressured (us) on the high ball and during corners.”

The Philippines will have to win its next two matches against Cambodia tomorrow and Malaysia on Nov. 29 to qualify for the semifinals.

Games Today
4pm Singapore vs. Indonesia
6:30pm Myanmar vs. Vietnam

BACOLOD -- The Philippine men's football team displayed its best performance in years but still fell short of its aim to snap a 10-year losing streak, yielding a 1-0 decision to mighty Thailand Wednesday in their 23rd SEA Games match at the Panaad sports center here.

Powered by six Fil-foreigners, the Filipinos were able to match the defending champion's firepower, holding the game scoreless for more than half-hour.

But a defensive lapse on the 36 th minutes allowed the Thais to break the ice, courtesy of Chakrit Buathong's liner that turned out to be themarginal goal in the tightly-fought contest.

The Filipinos actually were given a bunch of opportunities to score. In one instance, Fil-Briton James Joseph Younghusband were awarded a penalty kick on the 18th minute but failed to convert.

Action shifts to the Paglaum Sports Complex Thursday with two Group B matches featuring Singapore versus Indonesia , and Vietnam against Myanmar.

The Vietnamese, the 2003 silver medal winner, will shoot for their third win in as many games with a victory assuring them of a slot in the cross-over semifinals. Their last victory came Tuesday night when they routed Laos, 8-2.

Myanmar, the other hand, is still looking for its first win in the tournament. They absorbed a 3-2 beating at the hands of Laos in their initial outing, and then drew, 0-0, with Indonesia in the next.

Singapore is also looking for its victory number one after bowing to Vietnam, 2-1, in its first assignment. (CF)

even with the loss, i think it only shows that we are not anymore the minnows in ASEAN football... the team could have done better... to bad they missed a penalty kick... i still believe they are going to go thru the semis by blowing cambodia and upsetting malaysia.... a good result will trigger the development of football in the country...
i noticed freddie gonzalez is not in the line-up.. where is he??????

i read somewhere that he's too old to play for the sea games. the SEAG football event is a U-23 thing and FG is already like 27 or something.

ONE of the fil-foreigners the Philippine Football Federation is eyeing for the 23rd Southeast Asian Games is 19-year-old Darren Hartman of Southampton England.

Hartmann, who’s mother is from Bataan, was part of the Tiger Cup training pool but didn’t get to play in the biennial meet. Last March, he got to play for the country in the Bolkiah Cup in Brunei, an annual tournament for the U 21 squads of the Southeast Asian Countries.

“It was an honor to represent the Philippines,” Hartmann wrote in an email reply to Sun*Star Cebu.

Who is Darren Maurice Calibjo Hartmann?

The second son of Andrew and Josephine, Darren is currently taking A level Math, Biology, Business and Sports at the Totton College. His older brother Mark is at the university while his younger brothers Matthew (15) and Mark (13) are contracted at Portsmouth FC of the English Premier League.

Mark had just been offered a four year contract and Matthew is on a two year apprentice and is the youngest player to play for the reserve team.

“I have always been a very keen sportsman ever since I could walk,” Hartmann said.

Aside form football, Hartmann representedd his county at track and field and cross country but concentrated on football when he turned 15 when he was invited for training at the Southampton FC Academy.

“Between me and my two brothers, we have over 120 trophies from Cup Competitions, League Titles, 6 aside tournaments, European tournaments, player of the season, youth player of the season awards,” Hartmann said.

“I am predominantly right sided but I’m capable of playing left sided, in a 4-4-2, I play an attacking right back, and in the 3-5-2 I play wing back,” he said,

Before his stint for the RP team, Hartmann counts his first season in the Under 10s as his most memorable.

“We got through to a cup final, and it was the first time, that I got to play in front of a big crowd in a small stadium. I had my name in a match program with a little background and I still have it and its nice t look at it and it reminds me of how far I have come,” he said.

Hartmann is also grateful for the support of his love ones.

“My mum and my dad for all the support and for coming to all my matches. Mybrothers for being the best I could wish for. And a very special person in my life, Holly for all the times she has been there to pick me up and keep me going when things have gone wrong I was blessed the day I met her,” he said.
