Foreign imports ruffle feathers

TOR CHITTINAND - Bangkok Post Article

Bacolod City, Philippines _ The president of the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) is unhappy that some of the teams competing in the 23rd SEA Games in the Philippines are using foreign players.

"This does not help the development of football in Asean countries," Vijitr Getkaew said yesterday.

"I disagree with the Philippines and Singapore bringing in foreign players and giving them nationality," he said.

"In the short term it may help them, but it is not good in the long term."

Vijitr claimed the Philippines have six foreign players in their side, four of them from England.

"This will not be an easy match like it was in the past," he said.

"I will just be happy to see Thailand beat them."

The Thai team trained in Bacolod yesterday and the players said they were looking forward to the action.

Deputy team manager, Virach Chanpanich also expressed concern over the Philippines' foreign players.

The opening match of the tournament yesterday provided a shock when unfancied Laos upset Burma 3-2. Vietnam beat Singapore 2-1 in the late game.

"The Younghusbands, whose mother hailed from Cebu, meanwhile, offered their services to the country after getting to know Philippine football activities through the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) website.

PFF vice president Tony Chua, in charge of the RP team training for the SEA Games, said representations have been made and the Younghusbands have committed themselves to come in November.

"They’re coming and playing for us for free. They’re honored to wear our national colors," Chua said of the Younghusbands.

Between the two, James, 19, has the better credentials since he has already played an A-match of the Chelsea team. A-match features the premier players of the Premier League. "

All of the judges in the 2005 National Costume Competition were Thai!

Natalie Coughlin
QUOTE
Media are not the only people interested in her Olympic success. Recently, Coughlin, who is part Filipino, found herself graciously declining an offer by the Filipino national coach to represent the island country at the upcoming Southeast Asian Conference. At home, endorsement offers and sponsors (mainly Speedo) are beginning to come in as well, which is something Coughlin had previously postponed.

claim to fame: swimmer and Olympic gold medalist

Have you ever known a Filipina grandmother who didn't take every opportunity to show off her fabulous home cooking? Olympic gold-medalist Natalie Coughlin's lola, Zenaida “Zennie” Bohn, is no exception. Hailing from Meycauayan, Bulacan, Zennie is a constant presence at Natalie's swimming events, bringing loads of lumpia and pancit for the whole swim team.

event in billiards.

biggthumpup.gif Cojuangco surprised but proud of RP snookers’ accomplishment By JOSEF T. RAMOSPhilippine Olympic Committee president Jose ‘Peping Cojuangco couldn’t believe what he heard about the RP snooker team late Monday.

Proving that billiard wasn’t the only specialty they have, locals Alex Pagulayan, Joven Alba and Leonardo Andam scored RP’s nerve-jangling 3-2 win over Thailand that gave the Filipinos the gold medal at the Makati Coliseum.

“That win was unbelievable. I’m not expecting it but a win is a win,” said Cojuangco, noting RP’s victory in snooker was good news. “I didn’t watch it personally but I’m happy when I learned of the news.”

The Philippine team pulled off a win in the first frame of the best of five series of the event after Pagulayan sank the pink ball for a 62-48 score in the first rack.

In the second rack, Thailand’s Supoj Saenla, Nitiwat Kanjanasri and Phaithoon Phonbut kept their hopes alive as they made most of their attempts to tie the Philippine team, 1-1.

Andam showed expertise in the pool table sinking most of his shots to keep the Philippines ahead, 2-1, but Pagulayan’s mistake—a scratch—gave the Thais an opportunity to tie the game again at 2-2.
Joven Alba kept his concentration intact as he pocketed all the remaining balls on the table to close the match and give the country a gold medal.

“The snooker team’s win is a good blessing for us, and it only shows that we could snare the overall title,” Cojuangco added.
